"POV: I want to become a software developer in 2024"
If you’ve been wanting to learn how to code in 2024…
Or you’ve been coding for a few months…
This is for you.
With how fast the tech industry has changed in the last 24 months with hiring freezes, layoffs, AI, etc. it can be quite confusing and even scary to decide what your next step should be.
The approach I took when I first got started vs. the approach you need to take has changed significantly.
If you want to thrive in the age of AI -
1) Become familiar with AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, etc.
The more you learn how to navigate these tools, the more valuable you become for an employer.
Learn prompt engineering.
Better prompts = Better results.
2) Learn Python
Since I started programming, Python has been my favorite language and that’s not without reason ;)
When it comes to AI & Data - Python is KING 👑
It’s easy to learn and easy to work with.
Having an understanding of the programming language that drives AI will give you an edge.
Here’s what’s going to happen…
There are careers in the industry that will become obsolete over time.
👉 Programmers - They’re going to shift towards Product Managers.
Not every programmer will make the cut. Only the ones that embrace this technology and learn how to use it effectively.
👉 Frontend Developers - There are tools already popping out like v0 by Vercel that can take a description or a screenshot and build you frontends. It’s only going to get better.
Frontend Developers might get replaced by UI/UX Designers who feed their designs to AI that does the coding part of development.
These are just two careers that I see becoming obsolete soon.
Now what does this mean?
This doesn’t mean you skip the fundamentals of programming entirely.
The knowledge you acquire coupled with AI tools will help you move faster in your career and it will be like that for quite some time.
Until every developer on the planet is replaced by AI and AI takes over the world 😂
There are still companies hiring frontend developers, backend developers, fullstack developers, software engineers because they have codebases and systems that rely on humans.
It will take years for these big tech companies to make that change because they have complex systems and they’re usually slow at making big changes.
Compared to startups where things move pretty fast.
It’s like how there’s still demand for developers who program in Scala or Assembly - not sexy like JavaScript but there’s still a demand.
Don't skip out on the basics.
But don’t avoid learning AI tools either.
Use it as a tool to help you solve problems faster.
If you start now adding these skills to your tool belt, you're going to be able to solve problems much faster and you’re going to increase your likelihood of getting hired as a developer.
