What is fatwood you ask? Fatwood is pine wood thick with/saturated with resin. What happens is when a branch dies, the tree pumps sap up from the roots and shoots it up the roots sending it to the broken branch and heals itself with it. The sap condenses (like blood that clots) till it becomes thick and sticky. Once the sap condenses to a sticky state it is then called resin. Some of that resin seeps out of the tree and some of it stays in the wood. That wood is now Fat with resin. "Fatwood." Often when an entire tree dies the whole tree becomes resinous and more often the roots and/or stump becomes resinous. It is about the best natural fire starter that you can find. Why so many of us go bananas over it and some don't? In some parts of the world it is very abundant. And many parts of the world it is hard to come by. Also it takes a bit of learning to be able to find it. It is exciting to find for many of us. It is also very useful in starting fires. Those of us who use fire places and/or wood stoves find it to be much more useful than paper or anything else. Same goes for many of us who have allot of camp fires and/or bon-fires. What is fatwood you ask? Fatwood is pine wood thick with/saturated with resin. What happens is when a branch dies, the tree pumps sap up from the roots and shoots it up the roots sending it to the broken branch and heals itself with it. The sap condenses (like blood that clots) till it becomes thick and sticky. Once the sap condenses to a sticky state it is then called resin. Some of that resin seeps out of the tree and some of it stays in the wood. That wood is now Fat with resin. "Fatwood." Often when an entire tree dies the whole tree becomes resinous and more often the roots and/or stump becomes resinous. It is about the best natural fire starter that you can find. Why so many of us go bananas over it and some don't? In some parts of the world it is very abundant. And many parts of the world it is hard to come by. Also it takes a bit of learning to be able to find it. It is exciting to find for many of us. It is also very useful in starting fires. Those of us who use fire places and/or wood stoves find it to be much more useful than paper or anything else. Same goes for many of us who have allot of camp fires and/or bon-fires. Bloody Rich MI GOLD High Octane Fatwood Score Bushwhacking for Fatwood in SW Michigan Shlisa Shell 2023-10-05 | Bloody Rich MI GOLD High Octane Fatwood Score Bushwhacking for Fatwood in SW Michigan.~I scored myself some bloody rich fatwood this trip to the woods. I took my chain saw and pole saw with me to harvest MI GOLD High Octane Red Pine Fatwood. I did not find as many large branches as I had hoped but wow did I find some quality top of the line red pine. Such a great score. But I had to work for it let me tell yeah. The area where these red pines were, were tangled with brush. bushes, prickers, thorns, stick tights dead branches. I used my pruning saw for a machete. Much of this fatwood is bloody rich and what I mean by that is it's blood red resins and very fresh.
