Joe Alterman - Hanukkah Candle Blessings Joe Alterman 2024-12-26 | Tonight marks the first night of Hanukkah, and I wanted to share something special.It’s always struck me that while Jewish composers gave the world so many Christmas classics — from White Christmas to Let It Snow — they didn’t leave us with many Hanukkah songs.The reason? The jobs they were hired for called for Christmas music, not Hanukkah tunes. Christmas dominated the holiday season in America, and there was a demand for new songs to fill department stores, radios, films, and theaters. Jewish composers, deeply embedded in the entertainment industry, wrote the songs that were needed — and that sold.In addition, Christmas in America became more than just a religious holiday; it turned into a cultural celebration, and writing those songs was a way for these Jewish composers, most of whom were either immigrants or the children of, feel part of the broader American story.Hanukkah, on the other hand, stayed closer to home — a quieter, more intimate celebration that didn’t carry the same commercial appeal.That’s why tonight, I’m sharing my favorite Hanukkah melody, one whose commercial appeal may not yet have been realized! Today I’d like to one last song Christmas song this season – ‘Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas.’This song carries a beautiful story and a depth of emotion. Originally written by Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane for the 1944 film “Meet Me in St. Louis,” it was first performed by Judy Garland. The earliest version reflected the uncertainty and hardship of World War II, but Garland asked for gentler lyrics to bring comfort. Frank Sinatra later brightened it even more, transforming the line “Until then we’ll have to muddle through somehow” into “Hang a shining star upon the highest bough.”The journey of this song – from melancholy to hope – feels like a reminder to hold on to light, even in difficult times. Fun fact: even though this song paints the perfect winter scene, Mel Tormé and Bob Wells actually wrote it on a hot summer day in 1945 to “stay cool by thinking cool.”In just 45 minutes, they gave us the iconic lines about Jack Frost and yuletide carols, but it wasn’t until Nat King Cole recorded it twice that it became the holiday standard we know today.
