New Jersey may be one of America's smallest states by area, but it is home to more than nine million people and offers an impressive variety of landscapes, from dense cities and suburbs to farmland, forests, beaches, and coastal wetlands.
Much of today's journey follows the Garden State Parkway, one of New Jersey's most important highways. Opened in stages during the 1950s, the parkway stretches for more than 170 miles and connects the northern part of the state with the famous Jersey Shore. Its name comes from New Jersey's long-standing nickname, the Garden State, a reminder of the state's rich agricultural heritage despite its urban reputation.
