Thoughts:
This song is a reflection that all in all, this is going to be worth it. It's difficult to describe but I have this continued excitement to fail upwards with full confidence that we will grow a 52-person orchestra, and this new studio is the perfect starting point to embark on an adventure.

It's an idea worth fighting for - I want children to have new music to study from, online audiences to experience fun ideas, and orchestra composers to have other avenues rather than artist colonies and writing grants.

I needed a few extra days to get things in place so that I can remain on a strict release schedule. I've never been happier to see an idea come to fruition, and this is turning into how I imagined it years ago.

As for the composition, the flute takes me away to a melody that I've heard for years but hadn't finished. So that each time I hear it I'm reminded of how awesome music is, how lucky I am, and how ideas can grow if you believe in them whole-heartedly. The bass supports the melody so that it can remain simple, yet inviting - and it's that simplicity that defines this composition. All in all, everything is becoming simple again because life is like music - you start with a blank piece of paper and then you turn the invisible into something visible.

The Weeknd I Feel It Coming String Quartet

Walt Ribeiro - Orchestra 2022-02-13 | This is a song that I arranged 5 years ago. It was one of my first recordings since the car accident. So everything is a mess and I remember that I was very dizzy during this. I couldn't concentrate to get all the cameras working, the sheet music wasn't printed correctly (we began with paper instead of iPads), and the audio recording was barely usable.

As for the arrangement, I don't recall much. One of the issues I had was that the syncopated 16th notes were going to be a difficult to work with - either with page turns on the sheet music, or with rehearsing the song. It turned out OK, but only because the musicians were very good. Otherwise this day would have been a disaster.

But then if the song was going to present so many challenges, why did I decide to arrange it? No idea. It was a popular song that I enjoyed and I thought that Abel's voice would be fun to work with, which it was.

I remember last year that The Weeknd was performing at the Super Bowl, so it's a bit odd that I'm uploading this on a Super Bowl Sunday. I would have loved to upload it last Super Bowl Sunday but I wasn't feeling well. And I actually meant to upload it yesterday on my day off of work, but I decided to do 10 hours of physical therapy instead. Yesterday was not a fun Saturday.

Walt Ribeiro Gaming The Troll Beast

Walt Ribeiro - Orchestra 2022-02-06 | This song is about something my dad said to me a few years ago. He pulled out a newspaper, pointed to an article titled "5 Ways To Survive The Internet", and then said "#1 says ignore the trolls, what's that mean?"

So this song is about internet trolls. And I imagine the troll beast as this final boss of all internet trolls. Like, you've reached the end of the internet and you now have to defeat the last superboss troll in order to beat the game. So you juke out the troll and do some reverse psychology. And boom - you are victorious and are now able to publish music, ignore the trolls, and continue on with your internet life.

Walt Ribeiro - Orchestra 2022-02-06 | This is based on a speech by Neil Gaiman where he said "Make Good Art". He made this speech at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, which is where I went to school.

This piece is about the Youtube hustle - the idea that you have to stay on the hamster wheel and continue to churn out new videos faster faster faster and more more more.

Having been on Youtube since 2006, and now that I'm returning to it, I'm seeing how much things have changed. So I'm back on the hamster wheel, but this time it's much more competitive. All at a time when I'm knocked down and knocked out. Not sure if I can climb the mountain again but I figure it's worth trying. I just have to create a lot of good content and as fast as possible.

Walt Ribeiro A Dance With Ice

Walt Ribeiro - Orchestra 2022-02-06 | 4th song in the concert! I'm almost done uploading them for you. This song was inspired by the Roblox theme song. The weeping violin in the first Chorus reminded me of the weeping penguin in Super Mario 64. The penguin is surrounded by all this ice and crying to it's mother.

So the introduction felt like a mysterious dance, and then the chorus made me think of ice. I'm not sure why. What does it mean???? Probably nothing.

I actually deleted a section of the sheet music a few months ago and had to reconstruct it during one of my livestreams. I must've rewrote a section of the music after this video was recorded. I'm not going to re-edit my music anymore after it's published. I'm learning a lot throughout this project, and that's one of them.

I hope that you enjoy this piece. It's unique to my catalog because I usually don't have long song intros or syncopated bass lines. But this one turned out quite fun!

Walt Ribeiro - Orchestra 2022-02-06 | Ahhh what a fun piece this was! OK, so you're seeing a theme that I get inspired by videogames - and this piece is no different! There's a stage in Mega Man called Chill Penguin that I absolutely loved, and it gave me this melody. So, why walrus? Well, it's the closest animal name to "Walt", so this is the Chill Walt to the Chill Penguin.

I remember sometime last year when I wanted to rewrite this song, but I decided against doing that because I think that it's important to move on and leave the past as a historical time capsule. After all, my composition abilities are always improving, but it doesn't make sense to go back each week and rewrite my entire catalogue.

Walt Ribeiro Blue Trot

Walt Ribeiro - Orchestra 2022-02-06 | When I was arranging Megalovania for orchestra, I really came to appreciate Toby Fox and his music. Fast forward a few years later, and when Toby released the videogame Undertale, I gravitated towards the soundtrack song "Bonetrousle".

Blue Trot is strongly influenced by "Bonetrousle" and when I wrote this song I imagined a bouncy feel, similar to a horse trot. The strong downbeats give it a powerful foundation of stability like a horse's posture, and then the bouncy trot on top gives it a fun lift of surprise.

Walt Ribeiro Ninjamo

Ninjamo is a song inspired by Ninja Gaiden, the NES videogame from 1988. I loved the music, the cutscenes, and the fast action. I remember being amazed that I could climb up walls so fast and slash monsters.

It's no secret that I enjoy videogame music. Rhythmically it's fun because of the syncopation, and it's so dark and driving with the harmonic minor that adds a touch of mystery to it all. Which, to be fair, is quite fitting because ninjas are mysterious. Remember Real Ultimate Power? I'm dating myself here with my internet lingo from the early days of the internet.

Anyway, here's a song that reflects my youth, the feeling of surprise, and the mystery of how cool ninjas are.

Walt Ribeiro The Clicker

Walt Ribeiro - Orchestra 2021-09-19 | This piece is about all about growing as a conductor, and letting your mistakes be loud. This piece was written without percussion. However, when I setup the lights, audio, cameras, and rehearsals then I did test run with a metronome. No big deal because I was new at conducting and was therefore nervous. The problem is that not only did all my other recordings without the metronome not record, but the only recoding that I did correctly was from the rehearsal - with the metronome click baked into the recording!

So I had a few options:
1) Chalk it up to experience and never release this song recording
2) Release it with the click
3) Remove the click using phase cancellation, a noise gate, and some audio plugins like iZotope RX8 and a few others
4) Try and write a percussion beat in Logic Pro in order to "cover up" the click.

#1 would be sad since I spent a lot of money on this recording. #2 was fine but it was a bit disconjolting to listen to. #3 gave me poor results, to the point that removing the click always took away too much "thickness" of the recording. So I went with option #4. But as some of you on Patreon asked - I will also be uploading option #2 - the raw click version.

So now you may be asking "Since you named the song afterwards then what was the title of this piece before it was The Clicker?". The answer is "Guitar Piece". I know, I know. But it was a working title that reminded me of the days I would just sit at home and play descending arpeggios all day on the guitar. You can hear the obvious influence, it's one of those songs that is easier to play on guitar than on piano.

If there's one positive takeaway from this mistake it's that I enjoyed messing up. I enjoyed trying to see if I could come up with a solution to an otherwise aggravating problem that I caused. The other thing I like about this is that it sort of shows me what my music will sound like once I can start adding percussion (or any extra instruments, for that matter).

So enjoy this song. You'll hear the metronome click at the very end, or if you want to hear the click all the way through then the download link is at the bottom. Heck, if you wanted to add a click of your own then download the song and add your own percussion to it - it's 138bpm and licensed Creative Commons!

Walt Ribeiro Palindrome

Walt Ribeiro - Orchestra 2021-09-12 | This song was written at a time when I was re-visiting writing music again. It was a difficult process that was a bit overbearing, so I took it slow. Perhaps that's why I chose the slow tempo.

A palindrome is something that reads the same both backwards and forwards. While the notes of this song are not a palindrome, the title reflects more about how my life became backwards as well as forwards and in a constant state of uncertainty.

This piece's main pattern has an arpeggio that repeats throughout (called an ostinato). This ostinato doesn't add any drama to the composition with big peaks and valleys, but it does allow the piece to breathe.

Perhaps that's what I need to do - breathe. And just realize that sometimes a rebuild takes patience and time. The violin was invented 400 years ago, and is still being perfected to this day. Talk about something that needs both patience and time! While this piece isn't something that I would write today, it's captured a moment in my life when my life felt like a palindrome.

If you're listening to this piece, then hopefully it gives the impression of taking things slower than usual. And hopefully it gives you a melody that you remember.

Fullmetal Alchemist Indelible Sin (4 of 52 musicians)

Walt Ribeiro - Orchestra 2021-03-29 | I recorded this song in 2017, a few years after the car accident. So I'm sorry for releasing it so late. I remember after recording it I just wanted to go home and lay in bed in pain. This weekend I talked on Discord how I've been feeling better, so I finished editing the video.

This is one of my favorite anime songs. I remember back in 2014 I talked on Tumblr about how I want to do all anime songs for now. on. Well, that has changed, obviously. Life has changed. I don't want to do cover songs anymore because after everything I've been through I just don't know what the future will hold. I need my original songs to come to life.

Until that happens, I hope that you enjoy this arrangement. It was fun to do, and the musicians are the best. And the song is incredible. It's a song about two people walking a trail together, into the unknown. But they have each other.

I have you. And we're walking this journey together to build an orchestra. It's a journey that's long overdue, just like this video. But it's begun, so that's a good sign.

Here's an original song I wrote. I didn't want to release a cover song on my birthday, and I wanted to show the world what this idea can become. A few years ago I became a music professor as a college, and they have this huge room that is perfect for video shoots. Naturally, I asked my music director if I could use it and he was excited to see it get used. Notice all of the music instruments that are in the background. I like that.

As for my conducting, you'll notice that it's a little robotic. I was so nervous about it that I had a metronome next to me to keep me in time. I'll get better as they continue (hopefully they do).

"Heavy Dirt" is about going through life and getting completely destroyed by the elements around you. It all becomes heavy, and it all becomes a burden that you try to fight along the way. The hardships, the pain, the tough decisions, and the aftermath. It's not all bad, but it's all an experience that leaves you beaten down and dirty.

You'll notice that all my videos are filmed in different locations - I usually record a few songs in one location, but because my hard drive is so scattered with random files from when I was carelessly recovering. My audio, video, and image files are disorganized, which I mentioned on Twitter a few days ago. So now I'm editing videos as I piece their media files together. This video had 30 different files in different hard drives, and it wasn't easy to find everything at first.

Since 2005, I've grown to love mashups. My blood is, after all, made up of 100% internet. Here's one for the internet - Smash Mouth "All Star" notes mashed up with the Nintendo Wii Mii rhythms.

Does it work? Sort of. I originally wrote it to be much longer, but it felt more natural to make it short. One of these days I'm going to unleash a 20 minute classical composition that is inspired by Nintendo Wii. This is not that piece, but I'm sure it's brewing somewhere inside me.

Similar to the previous video, I didn't tell the string quartet what they were playing this time either. But seriously - aren't they the best musicians ever? Like, the level of talent in this room is remarkable - it's what reminds me every day that I need to stop doing MIDI.

Here's the 3rd "backwards" video this month. You may be familiar with the Russian folk song "Korobeiniki", better known as the Tetris theme song.

I didn't tell the string quartet which song it was, I wanted to see if they would figure it out. They sort of did. I also wish I did a better job of arranging this piece. Maybe I could have made it longer and more adventurous sounding. I don't like how the ending just fades. But this was more of a test to see if the idea worked. Now that I know it does, maybe I can revisit it in the future.

I had this idea a few years ago "what if I arranged a song completely backwards note-for-note, recorded it, and then played the video in reverse - would it work?

I got home that night and to my surprise - it did. I recorded this a few years ago. So I apologize if it's taken me this long to upload it. I wasn't in a good condition until a few months ago. Here we are - starting from scratch. I've spent this week just thinking about the past, and wondering about how I'm going to build things back to where they were. Catching up on comments, fixing broken URLs, getting the Patreon support back, and of course the workflow of writing and editing music again.

Years ago I wrote this piece with a different title, but it means something new to me now while I was editing the video. "Full Restart" symbolizes the new beginning of where I am.

Back in 2015 I started my Patreon. For every $300 in donations I would add 1 more musician - until I got to a 52-person orchestra. The momentum was soon going to have me write for flutes, trumpets, timpani, piano, opera singers, and string players. And then suddenly it all stopped. I don't know what to think of it all. I don't know what to think of anything. But this piece is when I embark on a full restart.

As much as it may be a beginning, there are a lot that won't change - I want to keep things weird, write new and fun music, and make it as accessible as possible. That means that this song is licensed Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial 3.0, so you can record, share, rearrange, and have fun with my music (but not sell it).

I like how this video is a bit "tame". It's not loud (in both volume and editing) and I think that's accurate. I just want to have fun. I just want to write music. It's been the hardest thing to lose, but it's a happy feeling to know that it's still as beautiful as I remember it being.

3 Ways To Improve My Awkward Introduction in Speed King

Walt Ribeiro - Orchestra 2017-05-19 | My intro in Tuesday's "Speed King" song was awkward. This is how I could have improved it:

1.) "Maestros" was not the correct word
2.) I should not sing my introduction
3.) The orchestra should play similar to a text message's "send" and "receive" jingle notification. Then I talk between the jingle.

Thoughts on yesterdays Speed King recording

Walt Ribeiro - Orchestra 2017-05-17 | I'm starting a daily journal to reflect on each week's song that I upload. Some notes on how I could have improved for next time:

1.) My conducting was bad
2.) I'm so used to MIDI, so real instruments was a happy learning curve for me
3.) We're going to improve each week (we already have!)
4.) First step is the hardest. Most of my time was spent finding players. Now I can concentrate on fine-tuning this project.
5.) That was our first time meeting each other. That alone is fascinating, but I'm also thrilled how it turned out.
6.) We had a lot of camera issues and unknowns because it was our first try at this
7.) There were scheduling issues between everyone. I wasn't ready for that, but now we know what to do.
8.) Would a tripod shot have been better?
9.) My eyes were killing me - stay away from pollen!
