I've been uploading since 2011 (!!) on this channel, but this is the first time I've shared this aspect of myself. As a transgender woman, the prospect of people "finding out" what I sound like through recordings has been especially daunting, and while I'm not ashamed of my voice, I think it's the thing I'm most self conscious of - not just in my professional life, but my personal life as well. I've been worried about how everyone would react since I finished the recording session for this track and went back and forth over and over again on whether to include it, but I think over the process of finishing this album this year I ended up feeling like the album wouldn't be whole without it. I've always been a huge fan of Yasunori Mitsuda's work, and this track felt like a love letter to his style! I absolutely adore how it ended up turning out. I got to experiment a lot with composing exciting basslines for orchestral music in the writing process, and I feel like the lessons I'll take with me from that process will be so useful in how I approach both composing and arranging for orchestra in the future. I first started this track almost a decade ago, during the writing process for Breathe, but it didn't seem to make sense within that album, so it's been a wonderful experience moulding parts of Exhale around this track's inclusion. I strongly believe that the use of samples in music can have their own inherent value in a way that doesn't necessarily compete with or negate live performances and live instrumental recordings, and in this track the lead string line is one of my favourite examples of that in my own work. It's virtuosic, it's tender, and yet it's synthesized and programmed - with tracks like this, I have a lot of fun writing and performing sample patches with my keyboard. I feel the intricacies and eccentricities of the string sample I'm using mirror the natural imperfections of a physical violin in a way that I love, and I love the amount of control and intention I'm able to put when writing in conjunction within the limitations of the software I'm using. There's a lot of fun elements here that I really enjoyed incorporating - using clock ticks and ambient foot steps as percussion, the mechanical percussive elements contrasting with the organic synths that underpin the whole track, and some wide acoustic guitar chords to give everything some real depth and space. This also has a twin in the penultimate track, A City, Alive, that shares a lot of elements with this piece and features reinterpretations of the same leitmotifs. Forest Funk is one of those tracks from Danny Baranowsky's Super Meat Boy soundtrack that was just begging to be orchestrated. The more staccato feel is something I'm a little less used to working on, as well as the faster woodwind solos taking on the main synth part from the original, so working on this track was quite a challenge.
