Memories: MANGROVE PITTA chilling out in suburban Singapore kidowmer 2023-09-23 | As I was going through the folders of the birds I have met, I realised I still have many unedited clips of this very exeptional bird, the only Mangrove Pitta found in a suburban setting. For inexplicable reasons, this mangrove pitta appeared out of the blues, in the unlikeliest of places, & hung around for more than a week, foraging on the grass verge by the roadside, before disappearing into thin air.I sometimes wonder how it faired, whether it survived & was able to find its way back to its natural habitat. Balancing act YELLOW BITTERNs kidowmer 2023-09-13 | The sight of these Yellow Bitterns anchored stick- still between long reeds, really made me smile. Often skulking in nature, these two were literally in full sight on this occasion. Perhaps they thought they blended in well with the reeds & hence appeared pretty confident of their camouflage. 🤭😁 The first bittern's neck & chest vertical stripes resembled brown reeds, while the second bittern even swayed in sync with the reeds when the wind blew! I was lucky to spot it flying in & landing far away on a tree. It rested there for quite a while, occasionally spreading its glossy black wings to sun-bathe. Found from the Indian sub-continent to mainland SEAsia, the Asian Openbill is classified as a vagrant in Singapore, meaning that birds spotted here are not meant to be here. Both partners were obvoiusly receptive, as mating soon ensued. These birds are native to small islands and in coastal regions from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India, east through the Indonesian Archipelago, to the Solomons and Palau. As I was observing the resplendent Red-billed Blue Magpie at the open aviary in Bird Paradise, it surprised me by displaying its ability to store away food, in this case, berries, by concealing the latter under dead leafs. It also displayed Spatial memory (the ability to recall where an object was placed), when it retrieved another berry which it had concealed earlier. The bird was very far away, foraging peacefully undisturbed. It was thus a golden opportunity to watch its natural behaviour. At 19-23 in size, it is the largest species of woodpecker that exists today. Not the most attractive of birds, it is nevertheless uniquely eye-catching, with a greyish plumage that made it looked rather ancient. Early migrant BLYTHS PARADISE FLYCATCHER, Singapore kidowmer 2023-08-30 | We were delighted to start off the 2023 migratory season with a bang, being visited very early by this rare migrant, the Blyth's Paradise Flycatcher. This Flycatcher hails from southern China, mainland S E Asia right to the Indonesian archipelago, with northern populations wintering in the south. Both Amur & Blyth's Paradise Flycatchers are subtypes of the Asian Paradise Flycatchers. Unlike the Amur, the Blyth's Paradise Flycatcher's hooded head does not have a clear demarcation from its greyish black chest. Migratory TIBETAN SAND PLOVERS in breeding plumage, Singapore kidowmer 2023-08-30 | Formerly known as the Lesser Sand Plover, this newly named Tibetan Sand Plover is a common migrant to Singapore. What was special was that there was one among a flock of others who was still in full breeding plumage when it landed in Singapore. It spotted a rich orange-rufous neck-sides and breast-band, complete with a black forehead, lores & ear coverts.
