Back when I was young I loved the original Paper Mario on the Nintendo 64. When the sequel came out in the form of Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door on the Gamecube I heard nothing but praise from the critics. But I never completed the Nintendo 64 version and I only wanted to play the sequel after I had done that. That unfortunately never happened and so I missed one of the potential greatest games of all time.
Therefore I was very happy that Nintendo brought this beloved RPG back on the Switch in the form of the HD version with beautiful graphics and improved environments. And after playing it I cannot help but be absolutely blown away. I heard it was good, but I had no idea it was THAT good. I feel like the original Nintendo 64 Paper Mario does not get enough love, but after playing this sequel I have to agree that it probably is an improvement in almost every aspect.
The writing is hilarious, the worlds you visit are so varied with each a unique story and cast of memorable characters. It keeps the game fresh as each time you are doing something completely different. In one world you are facing off against a big dragon in a castle and in another world you take part in a martial arts tournament. Then you go to a ghostly town that has been hit by a curse and after that you even get to be a detective on a luxurious train.
The pacing is so wonderful and each chapter has its own unique gimmick that makes it fun. There are plenty of secrets and collectibles to find and overall it was just a fantastic experience. Despite this game being so old it probably will be one of the best games I have played this year. It took some time for me to experience this gem, but it has finally happened and I could not be happier. I just wish they would make more Mario RPG games like this.
