Ahead of the Curve: Women Scientists at the LMB was a symposium held on 10th-11th November 2022, celebrating women scientists who work or have worked at the LMB, many of whom have gone on to careers at some of the world’s foremost scientific institutions. Many of the women featured in Kathy Weston’s book “Ahead of the Curve” spoke about their career to date, including how the LMB influenced them.

$Daniela Rhodes: Aaron, tRNA and chromatin Aaron Klug: A Scientific Retrospective Aaron, tRNA and chromatin by Daniela Rhodes - Aaron Klug was instrumental in revealing the structures of complex biological molecules, from viruses to tRNA, to chromatin and zinc fingers. His most important contribution to scientific research was the development of crystallographic electron microscopy: combining the techniques of electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction to recover three-dimensional structural information from two-dimensional electron micrographs. For this work he was the sole recipient of the 1982 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. - Daniela Rhodes was at the LMB from 1969 to 2011. In 2011 she joined the School of Biological Sciences at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore as Professor and is the Founding Director of the NTU Institute of Structural Biology. Daniela Rhodes started working with Aaron Klug in 1969 as a technician working on the crystal structure of t-RNA and went on to crystallize the nucleosome core in 1976. She did her PhD under the guidance of Aaron working on determining the helical periodicity of DNA in solution to resolve the “linking number paradox”. After obtaining her PhD in 1983 she was appointed Group Leader at the LMB and remained there working in the area of chromosome structural biology until her retirement in 2011. She has provided fundamental insights into the structure, function and regulation of chromatin compaction as well as determining the structure of a number of important protein/DNA complexes involved in transcriptional regulation such as zinc-fingers and nuclear hormone receptors. For the last two decades she has focussed on the structure and function of the protein/DNA complexes that cap and maintain telomeres including the telomerase enzyme. She was one of the first people to suggest a role for DNA G-quadruplexes in biology and provided the first in vivo evidence for their existence and regulation at telomeres. Daniela was Chair of EMBO Council 2009-2011 and was Chair of the HFSPO Council of Scientists until 2020.
