The rapid growth of cloud computing, AI and digital services is driving data-centre construction and, in turn, demand for electricity, cooling equipment and water. The ongoing energy crisis and associated grid pressures have shown how fast rising demand can strain power systems and reveal weaknesses in energy security. As workloads grow, pressure on electricity networks and local resources will only increase.

How can countries design and operate data centres to use clean, reliable power while reducing water use and environmental impacts? What standards and planning frameworks can ensure efficiency and sustainability from the start, instead of relying on expensive retrofits? How can the tech industry and governments work together to ensure that advances in AI and other technologies support progress towards net-zero emissions goals instead of jeopardising it? And who should fund the grid and cooling infrastructure these facilities need?
