Explain that the human body is a network of systems
Watch the video.
Discuss the following questions:
1) Name some of the things that are hidden inside your bodies. (stomach, small intestine, etc.)
2) The human body is made up of organs. Most of your organs are inside of your body, but the body's biggest organ is on the outside, covering all the other organs. What is that organ called?
3)Dr. Welbody said that the stomach and intestines are organs that are part of your digestive system, which turns the food you eat into energy. Certain organs in the body make up different systems that help the body do different things. What are some of the things that those body systems help your body do? (eat, breath, stand, speak, etc.)
4) There are many kinds of doctors who have different specialties. What kind of a doctor is Dr. Welbody and what is her specialty?
5) If you had a toothache, would Dr. Welbody be a good person to help you? What kind of doctor would be a better person to take care of a toothache?
6)Dr. Welbody names five of your body's networks. Do you think one of those is more important than the others? If so, which one and why?
Today's lesson objective:

Today's lesson objective:
Explain how grassland animals have adapted to the grassland habitat.
Watch the video.
Discuss the following questions:
1) Describe the East African Savanna.
2) How is the savanna the same or different from the Arctic tundra and the desert?
3) What are some of the plants that live in the savanna? Both the grasses of the savannas and the acacia trees have deep root systems. How do these deep roots help the plants survive the savannas?
4) How would you categorize the following animals: giraffes, elephants, and zebras? (herbivore, carnivore, or omnivore)
5) Pick one of the following animals and explain how they have adapted to living in the savanna: zebra, elephant, giraffe, oxpecker
6) How does the giraffe and oxpecker coexist?
Feel free to toss your Lima beans. We will retry this experiment in the near future.

Today's lesson objective:
Explain how desert animals have adapted to the desert habitat.
Classify animals on the basis of the types of foods that they eat (herbivore, carnivore, omnivore)
Watch the video.
Discuss the following questions:
1) Describe the weather and temperature of the Sonoran Desert.
(Dry, hot, not much rain)
2) Do many plants and animals live in the desert? Why not?
(No, because it's dry, hot and not much rain.)
3) How are the Arctic and the Sonoran Desert different? How are they the same?
You can discuss the weather (hot/cold), the plains (covered in ice vs. sand). They are similar in the fact that animals and plants that live in each habitat must adapt to the very difficult conditions, so there are not many plants and animals in either the Arctic or the desert.
4) How do animals find shelter in the desert?
Underground, or in holes they make in plants like the saguaro cactus.
5) How is the saguaro cactus adapted to live in the desert?
When it rains, it saves and stores lots of water that it can use during dry weather when it is not raining at all.
6) How do animals adapt to living there?
(come out at night, make shelters underground, etc)
7) Which animal did we hear about that was nocturnal? What does that mean?
(Elf owl, sleeps during the day and comes out at night.)
Today is day 11 for our Lima beans. Touch the soil, if it feels dry add a little water to Sample A. We'll give it one more day. If nothing sprouts by tomorrow you can toss it or wait a little longer. Up to you!
***There is nothing to turn in for this assignment.
*Optional:
You can discuss the animals in the document and classify them as omnivore, carnivore, or herbivores. If you have access to a printer, the pictures could be printed, cut out, and sorted. Answers are also attached in the document.

Today's lesson objective:
Explain how changes in the food chain impact the entire chain.
1) Watch the video and pause to discuss the questions.
2) At the end of the video discuss the following statement:
The author writes, "A change in one link is felt up and down that chain. It is felt through the whole web. And that’s a good reason to take care of the earth—to take care of its plants and animals.”
What does the author mean?
Sample Response:
All plants and animals are connected because of food chains. All food chains start with green plants because they can make their own food.
They link together predators and prey and every animal is linked to other animals and plants through food chains. Every plants and animal has
its own special, important place in a food chain. For example, if plants did not grow, then cows would not be able to eat plants to survive. Then,
us humans would not be able to drink the milk from cows!
3) Check to see if your Lima Beans sprouted. Touch the soil, if it feels dry add a little water to Sample A.

Explain why the author says that José became what he was born to be.
Assignments:
1) Watch the video and pause to answer the discussion questions in the video.
2) Write a response to the following prompt:
The author states that José “became what he was born to be.” What evidence does the author include to support this point? Did José just
“become” a dancer? Or did his actions and hard work make him a dancer?
Sample student response:
José Limón’s whole life prepared him to be an excellent dancer. He used all of the sounds and movements and feelings of his childhood to do
an amazing job in dance when he got older. Ever since he was born kicking, he was meant to be a fantastic dancer and that’s exactly what he
grew up to be. It took a lot of hard work and dedication to become a dancer. He faced a lot of struggles like when he was made fun of, but that did not stop him from working hard and achieving his dream!

Today's lesson objective is to:
-explain how Yuyi Morales’s illustrations help the reader learn more about the life of Frida Kahlo, by distinguishing between information provided by pictures and words.
-distinguish between information provided by pictures or other illustrations and information provided by the words in a text.
-use the illustrations and details in a text to describe its key ideas
Assignments:
1) Watch the video and pause to answer the discussion questions in the video.
2) Reflect on the following question:
How do Yuyi Morales’s illustrations help the reader learn more about the life of Frida Kahlo?
Sample student response:
The illustrations help us learn more about the life of Frida Kahlo because Yuji uses descriptive pictures. By looking at Frida’s facial expressions in the illustrations we can infer how she is feeling. We can also tell how Frida is feeling by Yuji’s use of color. When Frida is feeling joyful, Yuji uses brighter colors. Whereas, when Frida is feeling blue, Yuji uses more somber colors. For example, throughout the story Yuji tells the reader all about what Frida does and enjoys. On the last page, it says, “I live!” Yuji uses vibrant colors to show the reader that Frida is joyful and creating artwork makes her excited!
4) Draw a picture and write a few sentences about something that you are excited about. Some probing questions you can ask to guide their thinking: What is something you LOVE doing? What is something you can't wait to do? or Something you enjoy doing over and over again?

A few tweaks moving forward: I will only cover the textbook portion of the lessons on the video. This is to shorten the time students are spending in front of the computer. Please continue supporting students and giving them time to pause and follow along with me, before moving on. When students are finished with the video, students will need to work on the same corresponding lesson in their workbooks independently. Please support them if they are struggling with any of the concepts. Please take a picture and post only the workbook pages and upload them on google classroom.
***Please write a number between 1 to 5 on your child’s assignment, before taking a picture as a way to give me feedback on how your child did on that specific lesson.

1) Take Chapter 5 Assessment (attached as a google doc)
Take a picture of finished work and upload or write your answers directly into the google doc.
2) Watch video on Lesson 1 and follow along on your textbook page 129.
3) Work in your workbook Chapter 6 Lesson 1, independently.
Ask an adult for help as needed. Take pictures of the work you finished in your workbook and upload on google classroom.
4) Activity Materials: 40 counters, small plates
This activity encourages students to think about different examples of equal groups.
Instructions:
Choose some plates and some counters and put an equal number of counters, up to 10, on each plate. Any extra counters can be returned to the pile. Next, count the counters and say and write a matching equation. Repeat this activity (4-5 times choosing a different amount of counters and plates.
Example:
4 plates with 3 counters in each
There are 4 three's that's 12.
4 groups of 3 make 12.
3+3+3+3=12
4x3=12
Additional Activity (Optional)
Play Multiplication Mania
Materials : 2 dice, counters, dot paper (found inside your folder)
Instructions:
Roll 2 dice and choose one of the numbers as the number of groups and the other number as the counters in each group. Multiply to find the total. Example if I roll a 2 and a 5, I would write down 2 x 5 =10 Then I would roll again.
Play with 2 people to make the game fun. Take turns rolling and multiplying, the person with the greatest product wins each round. Play 10 rounds or more!
Have fun!
1) Watch video on Lesson 5 and follow along on your textbook page 163.
2) Work in your workbook Chapter 7 Lesson 5, independently.
Ask an adult for help as needed. Take pictures of the work you finished in your workbook and upload on google classroom.
4) Activity Materials: Kaboom Cards (found in folder sent home - needs to be cut out), several sets of Multiplication Fact Cards for 2 and 5 created by students.
Instructions:
Shuffle and place the cards in a pile, face down. Players take turns drawing a card and saying the answer to the multiplication fact. Students keep the cards they answer correctly, and return the ones that they answer incorrectly. When students draw a Kaboom Card, they must return all of their collected cards to the pile.
The player with the most cards at the end of the time limit is the winner.
Additional Activity (Optional)
Two's a Hopping
This game is played the same way as 5's a hopping form a previous lesson. You can watch the video for instructions if you need (attached). Just substitute the numbers on your grid from multiples of 5s to multiples of 2s for today's lesson.
Have fun!
Our objective for today's story is to explain why Jackson’s work is original, by identifying and explaining the reasons an author gives to support points in a text
Assignments:
1) Go over the word, 'biographies.'
2) Point out that this biography is different than the first biography they read because it only tells us the story of ONE painting, not the painter’s entire life.
3) Watch the video and pause to answer the discussion questions in the video.
4) Reflect on the following question:
The author says, “Jackson Pollock is doing something original, painting in a way that no one has ever seen before.” What evidence does the author include to support this statement? In what ways is Jackson’s work truly original?
Here is what a mastery response would sound like:
Jackson’s technique was very different/unique from other artists. The author shows that his work is original by explaining that Pollock puts his canvas on the floor while other artists put it on an easel. Some artists have a base coat of white paint but Jackson doesn’t because he leaves bare patches on his paintings. Some painters use oil paints or watercolors but Jackson gets normal house paint. Some paint pictures of flowers/people but he doesn’t paint these things. Jackson also dances around his canvas like a dancer/athlete using his whole body.
5) Write down 5 things that support Jackson's work being truly original. (Ask them to look for the evidence in the story.)
6) Please upload student work onto our google classroom.
Thank you!

Today’s lesson objective is to subtract a one-digit number from a two-digit number.
We have been practicing taking the numbers apart to take away from the 10 first, today we are learning a new method and taking away from the ones place first.
Lesson Materials:
Counters
Blank Double Ten-frame (found inside the folder that was sent home)
Please work on textbook and workbook pages for lesson 3 along with the video. When finished, take a picture and upload your work.
Additional Activities:
- Number Stories from Pictures
Materials: Storybooks or children’s magazines
Look for storybooks or children’s magazines to make number stories within 20 from pictures.
Popular Series include:
Where is Waldo? Series by Martin Handford
Where is Moshi? Series by Moshi Moshi Kawaii
I Spy Series by Jean Marzollo and Walter Wick
Can You See What I see? Series by Walter Wick
Hey Seymour! Series by Walter Wick
- Takeover!
Materials: A game board and markers from the house, Subtraction Within 20 Fact Cards (found inside your folder – you might have cut them out already if you used them for yesterday’s activities.)
Most board games requires a roll of the dice to determine how many squares to move. In Takeover!, players use a deck of Subtraction Within 20 Fact Cards to move.
On each turn, the player draws a subtraction fact card and figures out the answer. For example, if a player draws 19 – 9, she moves 10 spaces.
To extend, have students create their own board games with special spaces.
Chutes and ladders board games work best. You can also use the 100 chart (found in your folders) and play until you reach a 100!
- Subtraction Practice
Make a large T shape on a piece of paper. Randomly write out five numbers greater than 10 and have students write them on the left side of the “T.”
When they have those written, give them a number to subtract, such as, “Subtract 8.”
Students write “-8” on the top of the “T”, then proceed to solve the problems on the right side as fast as they can.
Play again using different numbers!
Have fun!

This is the second part of the story, A Splash of Red. The objective for today's lesson is:
- to explain which newspaper headline best describes Horace, by describing the connection between pieces of information and events in a text.
During the lesson remember to pause the video and discuss the questions before moving on. At the end of the video revisit yesterday's question: Would Horace's life have been the same if he hadn't found his love for drawing? Discuss some of the obstacles Horace faced and how he overcame them.
Please write a response to the following prompt:
Was Horace successful in life? Why do you think so?
Ex:
Paragraph 1: I think Horace was/wasn't successful in life because ....
Paragraph 2: Something I struggle with / or an obstacle I've faced ... and I overcame it by doing... (or) I plan on overcoming it by...
Paragraph 3: From learning about Horace's life I learned....
1st grade: 5 to 6 sentences
2nd & 3rd grade: 10 to 12 sentences
Remember to indent each paragraph, start with an uppercase letter and end with a punctuation mark!
Please upload all work onto our google classroom.
Thank you!

Dear families,
Although this book is not a biography, it’s a great book that provides a frame for our entire history unit. All the biographies in the unit will focus on people who had an idea or a passion and ran with it. Their passion and dedication were what made them successful. Many of them did what others thought was impossible, kept going, and their lives are inspiring others.
When listening to the read-alouds, please pause and discuss the questions in the video with your child. Feel free to ask additional questions that will aid their understanding of the text.
At the end of the read-aloud, have your child write a response to the following question: Should you always listen to other people's advice? Explain why or why not.
Thanks,
Mrs. Funda
