It opened in 1961 and closed in 2002, followed by a series of owners that have opened parts of the park for a short time.Ghost Town in the Sky was famous for its Wild-West theme, live-action shows and beautiful setting on top of Buck Mountain at 4,600 ft. In elevation. After parking and buying a ticket, visitors rode the chairlift or incline car 2/3 of a mile up the mountain, climbing more than 1,250 ft. in elevation. Ghost Town was divided into several "towns" with different themes, including Indian Village, Mountain Town, and Mining TownThe most popular section was the Old West town with saloons with can-can dancers, a jail and businesses along the main street that was the sight of hourly gunfights.The very unique theme park was created by R.B. Coburn and built for $1 million, opening in May 1961 as an immediate huge success. At its peak, more than 500,000 people visited each season. While new rides were added through the 1990s, older rides began breaking down on a regular basis. After visitors got stuck on the chairlift in 2002, Colburn closed the park and put it up for sale.The amazing mountain views were always a big draw. Ghost Town was sold and reopened in May 2007 after millions were spent on renovations. During a bad economy that brought high gas prices, the park closed again after the 2009 season due to a massive mudslide in February 2010 and financial woes. One of the original owners, Alaska Presley, bought the park back in 2012 with plans of transforming it to Ghost Town Village. Snuffy's Pantagis Renaissance dates back to 1932, when it was established by William Robertson, who ran speakeasies in Mountainside, Garwood, and Scotch Plains during the Depression. Robertson retired in 1972, selling the restaurant. Over the next five decades, Snuffy's became a popular destination for weddings, proms, birthdays, graduations, and anniversary parties, and fundraising dinners for countless non-profit organizations, before abruptly closing its doors for good on October 20th, 2020. This magnificent venue featured nine banquet halls all designed to an elegant renaissance theme. The construction of this building costed in the hundreds of thousands of dollars in the early 1930s which adjusted to todays’ inflation, is in the million of dollars. Over the years the venue was renovated to keep up with the times but stayed true to its original architecture. Due to economic hardships during the covid pandemic the business struggled to stay open. There was a lot of confusion from the owner on whether or not the venue will close down but as business began to decline more and morePantagis Enterprises owed the township $531,035 in back property taxes for all of 2019 and three quarters of 2020 with $45,238 owed in sewer bills, according to Scotch Plains' tax records. In order to keep ownership of the property The company must pay about $389,000 of those delinquent taxes from 2019, or else the township will list the tax liens for sale at auction. Snuffy’s did eventually pay off the back taxes from 2019 but failed to pay the 2020 taxes. Eventually a lien was placed on the property and Lidl purchased it for $8.8 million. the township council approved a redevelopment plan at the site for the grocery chain including a 51-spot park and ride and 7,500 square feet of additional commercial space. Unfortunately Snuffy’s Pantagis Renaissance, which was entered into a lease agreement with Lidl, would set to be demolished under the planAs of 2024 the famous banquet hall has been demolished and has buried the decades of memories along with it. EXPLORING the ABANDONED New Orleans SIX FLAGS - HID FROM SECURITY & CLIMBED THE ROLLERCOASTERS UrbanEx Alex 2023-09-23 | Hurricane Katrina was a devastating Category 5 Atlantic hurricane that resulted in 1,833 fatalities and caused damage estimated between $97.4 billion to $145.5 billion, It is the costliest hurricane to ever hit the United States, surpassing the record previously held by Hurricane Andrew from 1992. The city of New Orleans was hit the hardest. The loss of life and property damage was heightened by breaks in the levees that separate New Orleans from Lake Pontchartrain. At least 80% of New Orleans was under flood waters on August 31st 2005. Many people who chose or couldn't leave stayed behind and took shelter in the super dome where many thought it would become a safe haven New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin had ordered a mandatory evacuation of the city the previous day and an estimated 1.2 million people left ahead of the storm. However, tens of thousands of residents could not or would not leave.Thousands of people were trapped in their homes, businesses, and even hospitals. Rescue attempts were slow and it took days for the people of New Orleans to see their first signs of hope. As a result from the devastation of Katrina many properties throughout New Orleans were beyond repair, such as it’s six flags park. The park closed just days before the storm only to never open again, where it has sat abandoned for the last 18 years. The park sits right next to lake Pontchartrain and was completely submerged underwater. 3 weeks after the storm the park was still submerged in 7-8 feet of water. When the water was finally drained out, the damages were shocking. The water had eaten through buildings, left severe rusting, fried all the electronics, And six flags inspectors deemed the park was 80% demolished due to the storm damage. As of 2023 redevelopment and demolition plans have been approved but all previous attempts to save the park failed. who knows what is going to happen to this park in the future. PLANNING FOR THE NEXT CENTURY’S electrical needs, this southern state broke ground on this Nuclear Plant site in 1975.At the time, the plant would be the world’s largest nuclear plant. Amid much controversy, the sleepy town this plant was located in boomed with construction workers and new businesses that catered to the growing population. Just under a decade later, the decision was made to halt the entire project. Outside the four planned generators, there were a few buildings partially constructed. Various crews later dismantled most of the power plant. The boomtown went bust and mostly things went back to rural life for residents, except for the iconic nuclear cooling tower. Some refer to this tower as a giant empty beercan looming over the forests and pastures. Exploring an Abandoned Tuberculosis Sanatorium - Everything Left Behind UrbanEx Alex 2023-07-29 | In todays episode I traveled to the north east to explore this abandoned tuberculosis hospital where In 1907, one of the New England states opened its only state owned and operated tuberculosis sanatorium. It was intended to be a model institution, providing individual and public health benefits to an expected 500 cases annually. Ahead of its time in terms of treatment methods, the facility treated more than 10,000 people between 1907 and 1929.When the sanatorium opened, the original plan was that only “incipients” or “curables” would be treated. By the 1920s, the sanatorium’s mission had been broadened to incorporate treatment of all cases, regardless of severity. The sanatorium’s treatment methods remained relatively unchanged until the middle of the 20th century, when newer and more innovative medicines began to be developed. In 1950, the sanatorium broadened its scope of treatments once more, this time to include all chest diseases. The hospital was closed down in the late 1970s, and was left to fall apart.In 1977, a second hospital was built right next to where the abandoned tuberculosis center-turned-hospital site lay. which was really an extension of the hospital that was rotting next to it with a new name, focused on its new calling as a state nursing home and, eventually, a 288-bed psychiatric hospital for seniors.In 2012, the facility was shut down by the state and left abandoned, just like its neighbor and predecessor. It originally opened its doors to students on September 9, 1925. The school was named in honor of Warren G. Harding, the 29th President of the United States, who passed away shortly before its construction. Designed by C. Wellington Walker, the original school featured elegant Georgian style architecture and striking Greek columns. The school was in operation for 93 years, producing a few NBA basketball players, such as John Barley, Wes Mathew, & Charles smith, despite ranking in the bottom 50% of all schools in Connecticut for overall test scores.In 2018, a new school was built on a former General Electric factory site at a cost of $107 million. This new school was designed to provide a superior learning environment and enhanced safety measures to the students attending Harding High School in hopes of improving its rank.As of 2023, The old school has now been left abandoned with no future plans. Exploring an abandoned medium security state prison - Found working cell doors UrbanEx Alex 2023-05-21 | This abandoned medium security prison was constructed in 1929 and opened in 1932 as reformatory for men. This facility was originally designed and first used to house youthful offenders. The facility closed in 1992 due to opening of the John J. Moran Facility near by. However the prison facility reopened in 1997 until 2011 where It closed down again for the last time due to agency budget cuts.In 1997 when the prison reopened it was renamed to “Donald price medium security prison” after Correctional Officer Donald Price who was murdered on shift in the prison. In 1973, At the Age of 25, Officer Price, was only serving his first month with the Rhode Island Department of Corrections when one day he was called for help over the loudspeaker to a disturbance in the prison. Upon his arrival of the situation at 12:45am inmate John Carillo, a convicted killer, stabbed him in the back 8 times as another inmate drew his attention. Officer price was then transported to the Providence Hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds. John Carillo, 34, who stabbed Officer Price, was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison on November 30th, 1973. John Carillo has an extensive history of attacks on correctional officers and was deemed so dangerous that he was placed in solitary confinement for the next 10 years. He never was allowed to come out of his cell unless he had leg irons and handcuffs on first. The other inmate was convicted of second-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder and received a sentence of 40 years.I’m 2018 John Carillo was also charged with stabbing another correctional officer with a handmade knife. In 2023 Carillo died just after 1 a.m. Wednesday at Kent County Hospital, according to the DOC.As of today The former prison site, nearly 17 acres sold following an October 2020 auction, for $6.2 million The new owner, Richard Baccari II, was granted approval for his proposition to tear down the former prison and, in its place, put up a warehouse and manufacturing facility. The gambrel-roofed sandstone cottage sits on 54 acres of land, which a hardworking father purchased for $1.3k in the early 1800s. The father built the house for his newly born son Cornelius, devising the property to him in the 1850s. Cornelius was born in 1797 but then died in 1865, the home was then passed to his son James, a carriage-maker and master wheelwright. James ran multiple businesses from this house and had profited greatly from his prime location along a well-trafficked road. It has since fallen from pride of ownership onto hard times, but its antique craftsmanship and construction are still evident and it exemplifies the distinctive characteristics of the Dutch cottage style which is now an endangered species of American folk architecture. The original man that built this home was a surgeon who owned several practices throughout surrounding states. Construction started in 2006 for this $10,500,000 home with 10 bedrooms and 11 bathrooms. The man, not only being a doctor, was a licensed single engine pilot and he and his 15 year old son went out flying one day and they tragically crash into a mountain instantly killing the man and his son. The wife was left with her 3 other children and was forced to sell home. Afterwards it was purchased by a foreigner who lived in it until 2015 when he moved back to his native country and the taxes stopped getting paid. ABANDONED BLUE CHURCH AND MONASTARY - FULL DENTIST ROOM FOUND UrbanEx Alex 2022-05-18 | What’s up explorers! Today my friend Nessa and I explore this absolutely stunning church with a bunch of goodies left behind and we even meet some really cool people along the way. History:This church takes its name from the blue-tinted windows that were part of the original chapel. Since being abandoned in 2008, the structures and grounds of the complex, which include a cemetery, face an uncertain future. Between 1912 and 1914 the Gothic Revival complex was built and dedicated to the recitation of the Perpetual Rosary. The Adornments included artwork created by former resident Sister Mary of the Compassion. The stained glass windows were initially thought to have been imported from Germany but discovered in 2012 to have been created in Buffalo, New York. This convent housed a number of important relics, including those of the True Cross and fragments of a bone of Saint Dominic. There are approximately 65 graves of nuns located in the cemetery on the property. The U-shaped bluestone building that included the chapel, dormitories, kitchen, and offices was well-maintained for many years, but as finances and residents diminished it began to fall into disrepair and was vacated in 2009. Water damage and lack of heat have contributed to further deterioration. Plans by the order to renovate the building to apartments were met with community opposition and were withdrawn, leaving the status of the complex uncertain. Haunted Tuberculosis Hospital Still Has Power!! UrbanEx Alex 2022-01-15 | This was once the largest tuberculosis sanatorium in the country, now listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Designed by Raymond F. Allmiral, the architecture and layout of the Hospital reflected the latest in thought about the treatment of tuberculosis, including light, cross-ventilation, access to the outdoors, and thought towards medical operational efficiency. It is thought, according to the Landmarks Preservation Commission report, that the firm of Renwick, Aspinall & Owen also influenced the design. At its opening, it was declared “the largest and finest hospital ever built for the care and treatment of those who suffer from tuberculosis in any form.” it was a time before a cure for tuberculosis had been discovered, but after the cause of the disease was identified and its contagiousness confirmed at which point patients were moved off of floating hospital barges, which served only as day time treatment facilities.
