It seems that there has been so much innovation and new technology developed for the world of electronic drum kits recently and I have only just stepped my toes into the ekit realm. Mainly because the ekits that were around when I started playing drums were total garbage and cost a million dollars... Thankfully those days seem to be coming to an end with the Zildjian Alchem-e being one of the kits to push the industry along. Electronic cymbals have never been the best when it comes to their feel. Electronic hihats are notorious for being unresponsive and sluggish and rubber pads feel nothing like real cymbals, but the Alchem-e cymbals seem to have solved the major issue of feel. These are based off the Zildjian L80 cymbals, or low volume cymbals, which use a special alloy along with numerous holes to make a cymbal that feels and acts like a normal cymbal but at a lower acoustic volume. Combine that with some crazy technology that Zildjian developed and bam, you got electronic cymbals that feel like real cymbals.
Did Zildjian Just Solve the Biggest Problem with Electronic Cymbals?

Today I have an old Rogers Holiday from the 1960's from my buddy John. He found this kit on Facebook Marketplace for a killer deal, but of course it had been sitting for ages and needed a quick refresh.
I did glance over the buffing process, mainly because I'm still a noob… But first you want to clean all the dirt and debris off the shell. I didn't bother with removing the badges since they’re made from solid metal, but if they were a thinner regular style badge, or a badge with paint on them, I would take them off. For buffing, I started with the Novus “3” compound with a stiff pad, then went to the “2” compound with the same pad. I then wiped off any excess compound and switched to a wool pad and used a carnauba wax just to really bring out the shine. Then for the last step I used the Novus “1” spray to wipe off any haze from the wax. This spray also claims to repel dust, so that's cool too.
Other things to consider/things I didn't show:
-I didn't paint the inside of the shells, but if you need to match a paint color, you can bring a shell into a paint store and they can help you match the color.
-The tom mount looks crusty when I show fixing it, but I did clean it up afterwards
-I did buff the inlay on the bd hoop before painting it.
-I painted the new hoop with the same paint I used on the old hoop, just so the sheen was the same
-Check out this video for installing inlays on a hoop: youtu.be/iBH7y9dfDzc?si=kcTZpKifoOnlph-C
-Some vinyl doesnt like to stick to coated heads, but I did a secret technique to make it stick.

I've only really dove into the far ends of the e-kit real. The cheap $300-400 kits being one side and the super high end $10,000 kits being the other side. The Alesis definitely falls into the higher end of things coming in at $3,500-$4,500 depending on the configuration. However, the Strata easily has the best module I've seen, I mean it runs on Linux with a multi-core processor... It has crazy amounts of storage and a touch screen making it easy to navigate and fast to load sounds/kits. With huge multi-sampled kits, articulations, microphones, etc. this kit has some killer realistic sounds, making it a joy to play.

Once again Im checking out an Electronic Drum Set and which happens to be the most expensive one I've ever played. This is the new DWe (DW Electrified, made by DW Drums/Roland) which is a wireless electronic drum set that can also be converted into an acoustic drum kit by removing the triggers and swapping out the heads and cymbals. This configuration is currently going for $9,000, but they do offer smaller set ups as well as different finishs/wraps. The kit comes with cymbals, hardware, the drums, and downloads to the software needed to use the kit.

Once again, we're continuing the E-kit saga and checking out the Alesis Nitro Max Electronic Drum Set. The kit is only $400 but also comes with a free trial to Drumeo and a free download of the BFD Player, which is a software you can use to expand the kits/sounds to the drum set with a computer. Basically a way to use the kit like a midi-controller, but you dont need any recording software. The module has 32 built in kits, 50 built in songs, plus other features to help beginners learn their first beats. For only $400, this is a pretty solid kit, its about the size/quality you would expect from a lower priced electronic drum set, but is a beast of kit to play!
This Electronic Drum Set is a BEAST for only $400

This is the 2nd time I've checked out an electronic drum kit. Its not the most expensive or the cheapest e-kit, but its on the lower side of things. Only $799 on Amazon for this set of donner electronic drums! Ive played on a handful of e-kits, but its always been just messing around at a store or somewhere. Of course its hard to put an e kit on the same pedestal as an acoustic drum set, but when you stop comparing e-kits to acoustic kits you realize the value and potential in an electronic drum set.
Personally I did the drums sounds/kits on the DED-500 more than the DED-200 & DED-200Max, but the 200 series has more/better playalong tracks in my opinion.
This Electronic Drum Set Costs $799?!

Yup, even MORE wierd cymbals. These all come from GM Designs Cymbals. Our conversation started out with the idea of making a set of square hihats like the ones Sabian used to make. I realized that finding a set of the square sabian hihats would basically be impossible so I asked GMD to make a set. After that they thought it would be cool to send some more of their crazy cymbals! If you are looking for a unique sound for your kit, GMD most likely has something for you. Whether its an effects cymbal or just an odd ball take on a "normal" cymbal.

1st Drum Track: Ski Season
2nd Drum Track: Lord of Likes
Ive played almost every type of drum set at this point, but a nesting drum kit was one I never had the chance to try until today! Brownie Drum Company reached out and offered to build a nesting drum set for me and I couldn't refuse. This set up is a 12" rack tom, 16" floor tom, 20" bass drum, and 14" snare. I went with a purple metal flake finish for the kit and a gold flake finish for the snare. Brownie has a unique finish method for their flake finished. Instead of wrap or lacquer they use epoxy. Ill see how it hold up over time but epoxy seems to be more durable than lacquer. Nesting drums are great for drummers that gig a lot since they all stack inside of each other and fit into one case. When it comes to nesting drums, this is the first kit I've gotten my hands on but I willing to bet that out of all the commercially available options this is the most "normal" nesting drum kits. All of the others that I've seen focus more on the nesting than they do the drums. These are expensive drums, coming in at $4,300.

Needless to say, Ive always wanted an 80s Tama Bell Brass, but never wanted to pay full price for one because they are some EXPENSIVE DRUMS! A couple years ago I had the idea to make a fake one by taking the hardware off a Tama steel Mastercraft and slapping them on a brass shell. The shell in this video is a 14x6.5 3mm cast brass shell. Is it the same alloy that Tama uses in the Bell Brasses? Probably not, but still is a beast of a drum weighing 18lbs. The shell was too shiny for me so I wanted to age it with some patina.

Today were checking out another weird drum set! I was able to find this Remo Legero Drum Set on a Goodwill auction and was able to snag it for a decent deal. It didn't come with a snare drum but I happened to have a 14x3.5 Remo Mastertouch snare laying around that I've been meaning to fix which turns out that is the snare that would have came with the Legero Drum Kit. This kit was marketed as a light weight drum set for those that are tired of loading their full sided kits in and out of gigs every night. The drums stack into themselves and fit in a single case. By no means does this replace a normal drum set, but still is a cool sounding and weird looking drum set! The toms are 10x4, 13x4, 16x5, and the kick is 22x6. I think its safe to say that this kit is ahead of its time by being one of the first pancake drum sets!

After checking out a bunch of weird cymbals, I figured it would be worth a shot looking at some prototype cymbals. Not all prototypes make it into production so maybe there are some hidden gems that us drummers have been missing out on this whole time, or maybe theres some that are too weird and should never be heard by a human ear. The cymbals in this video are from Zildjian, Sabian, Bosphorus, and Saluda. These were the only prototypes I was able to get my hands on in the time frame I had, but there are countless other prototypes out there, so this is just a small sampling.

After I unboxed that DW Collectors Maple, everyone said I needed to check out a Sonor Drum set. Well a year later, I finally found a Sonor S Classix Birch that was worthy of checking out. Where I live you dont see too many people with Sonors and rarely do you see them come up for sale. As soon as I heard an S Classix Birch (Scandinavian birch to be exacpt) kit came into Sam Ash I went to check it out. Turns out there was a Sonor Jungle snare too! I still needed a "real" snare so I borrowed Bryce's 13x5.75 Benny Greb snare. These drums sound incredible, tuned up super easy, and recorded like a dream. Easily one of the best sounding kits I've come across! The S Classix line has kinda been forgotten about and replaced with newer lines from Sonor, but when it comes to this kit vs my DW Collectors, the Sonor takes the cake. No questions asked. Also this wasnt the most expensive drum set tbh. Of course I bought it used, but it was WAYYY LESS than that DW.
I FINALLY Bought a SONOR Drum Set!

We're finally taking a look at a Welch Tuning Systems (WTS) drum set! This is a slightly weird drum set since all you do is turn a single wing nut to tune the entire drum. Seems kinda gimmicky, but let me tell you, this kit sounds incredible and is SO EASY to get sounding good at any tuning. You can tune these SO LOW and still have tone because there is such even pressure around the heads. By far the most fun I've had playing a 4 piece drum set. Also that snare is money! I was skeptical since the system tunes the top and bottom head at the same time, similar to an old single tension drum, but the snare sounded killer at all tunings. This would be a great kit for a home studio, pit orchestra, or any gig where you have to change tunings on the fly.

0:00 24" Creative Percussion Steel FX Ride Cymbal
1:31 18" Sabian Rocktagon Hihats
3:22 11" Wuhan Linear Splash
4:57 Sabian V-Wave FX
6:43 18" Masterworks Blank Crash (my favorite of the bunch)
Yet again we're looking at some weird cymbals! We have some steel cymbals, some geometric cymbals, some weird wavy cymbals, and some blank cymbals.
The 24" Creative Percussion FX Ride Cymbal is made of steel and is fully hammered. This thing is BEYOND DRY, dare I say the driest cymbal ever. It look cool at-least, you don't see too many blue cymbals out there...
The Sabian Rocktagon is a cymbal we looked at in the past, but I found another! What do you do when you have two 18" Rocktagons? Make a set of weird hihats of course! These things are LOUD! Not the most musical, but have a cool sound unlike any other hihats out there.
Similar to the Rocktagon, next we have the Wuhan Linear splash. This is a 5 sided 11" splash cymbal. its pretty bright and trashy and would be one of the least weird cymbals sound wise. I would love to find a larger Wuhan Linear cymbal, but the 11" was all I could find.
Like death metal rides? Hate how big and heavy they are? Try the Sabian V-Wave! I dont even know how to describe this "cymbal." Its a big rectangular plate that has a swoopy do bent in it. Its super thick, really bright and has the sound quality of a dinner bell that the pioneers would use in the early 1800s.
My favorite cymbal would have to be the 18" Masterworks Blank Crash. Usually cymbal blanks sound raw, dry, and quiet. The Masterworks cymbal is the total opposite! Its bright, splashy, trashy, and explosive all while having a quick decay. Making it the perfect crash cymbal in my book!

I have never played a Premier drum set in my life and honestly have never even seen one up close. So to fulfill my quest of playing every drum set that exists, its finally time I change that! In this drum set review were taking a look at a Premier Genista 100SE and is one of a few kits released for their 100 year anniversary. Birch shells, undersized tom shells for clarity of tone and ease of tuning, and a vintage inspired red tri-band lacquer finish. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but this kit SCREAMS quality. The hardware is beefy and the shells and edges are as smooth as can be. The level of detail put in this kit is shocking. I've been sleeping on Premier for sure!
The stock Remo (Taiwan) drum heads were used in the demo. A port hole was cut in the reso side bass drum and 2 t-shirts and a hoodie were used a muffling. A small piece of gaff tape was used on the batter side of the snare drum to cut a bit of the overtones.

On my never ending quest of testing drum hacks, I came across these snare drum hacks from Instagram. As usual, some are pretty cool and work well, but others are pretty lame and not worth your time. We test out a snare drum with no rim on the batter head. Putting a coated head on the snare side, apparently John Bonham did this? Installing a kick port on a snare drum. A way to stop you snares from buzzing. Upcycling trash into some snare straps. And probably my favorite, because it actually sounds cool, mounting a snare drum on the bottom of a floor tom.

Roto Toms have definitely fallen off when it comes to the, modern drum sound. Most of the time roto toms are used as an add on to a normal kit. But the people over at Steve Weiss and myself wanted to see what a full drum set made of roto toms would sound like, including the snare and bass drums. This is an 11 piece double bass roto tom drum set, with 2 18" roto toms as the bass drums. We also made up a set of 16" hihats out of 2 Steve Weiss cymbals. Definitely a weird drum set for sure!

On my quest to find the WEIRDEST Drum gear, I came across these drum heads from Index Drums. These heads are made of plywood which as you can imagine is a totally different sound than your typical plastic drum heads. By no means are these meant to "replace" normal drum heads, but these wooden drum heads definitely create a unique sound which would be useful for a lot of different genres.

Today on 5 minute crafts, or I mean, 5 minute drums, 😉 were testing some OLD SCHOOL Drum Hacks. We tested some weird tictok drum hacks last time, so I decided to take us back a couple decades. Most of these have been forgotten about over time, but some actually work really well. "Vibra-Fibing," or the process of adding fiberglass to the inside of a drum shell is something that was done to make drums more reflective and add resonance. Neil Peart, drummer of RUSH, had a couple this done to a couple of his drum sets back in the day, so I really wanted to give this one a shot. Speaking of resonance, theres a rumor that John Bonham, drummer of Led Zeppelin, lined his bass drum with aluminum foil. No one really knows if did this or not, or even the purpose, but this hack really tightened up the kick drum and made it less "tubey." Broken cymbals are all too common. One way to repair them is to drill a hole at the end of the crack to stop them from spreading. Unfortunately this is just a temporary fix as the cracks will most likely spread. Ringo Starr, drummer for The Beatles, is famously known for putting tea towels on his drums to mute, muffle, and dampen them to get a more dead sound. And finally, I had to test putting a piece of wood underneath your snare drum to see if it makes it more responsive/louder/snarier. This one didnt seem to do much...

Not long ago I opened up a Donner acrylic drum set, so I wanted to check out an acrylic drum kit from another brand. This is a DW Design Series Acrylic in clear which is a little more pricey coming in at $2,200. The quality is miles ahead and the shells are different than the Donner acrylic drums. Another thing I wanted to see was how different acrylic shells are from wood shells. Lukes_Drum_Loot on Instagram sent me an old Pearl Free Floating Snare so I ordered an acrylic shell from RCI to swap out and do a wood vs acrylic drums comparison. Not super scientific by any means, but should give you a rough idea!

Mix Notes about Piano Reverb Chamber:
First of all, shoutout to @TimBuell for the crispy mix on this video!
From Tim: "Basically I gated the piano mic so that when a kick or snare hit it opens up. When you aren't hitting the kick or snare the gate ducks like -15dB so it still has chaotic verb but it is way more controlled and usable. Then I added a bunch of saturation/distortion."

Yet another Donner kit, imagine that... And it's a clear drum set! Just when I think they've done everything they can do, they surprise us with something else. As far as the current drum market goes, this is the cheapest acrylic drum set out you can buy new, unless you buy directly from Chinese manufactures on alibaba. Fun fact: I found one of these exact bass drums on there, but not the full kit. Anyways, the kit is cool, the quality is about what you would expect. They sell this as a full drum set configuration with hardware, cymbals, and of course the drums. It would be nice if they offered it as just a shell pack since at the over $1,000 price point, most people in the market for kit aren't looking for a drum kit that comes with mediocre cymbals, pedals, cymbal stands, and throne. Also, that would lower the price to a point most people would be more comfortable buying at. So whiles its the cheapest acrylic drum set, im not sure I would consider it a beginner drum set. But hey, what do I know. If you made it this far, Wal-mart currently has this kit on sale for $900

I always love a good challenge to flex my creative muscles. A couple years ago I built a suitcase drum set, but never was that happy with it. So today Im redeeming myself! I found a suitcase on facebook marketplace, used a bunch of drum set hardware, built some custom toms out of some drum shell scraps, threw some cymbals on it and bam, instant drum set that fits in a suitcase! I think it came out a lot better and sounds better than the original. Also much more fun than a cajon!

These are some of the WEIRDEST cymbals I've ever seen... The further you go down the drum rabbit hole you end up finding stuff like this! Last time we looked at the Zildjian Raw Crash, Gong Sheet, 22" Flat Bosphorus cymbal blank, another unknown cymbal blank, and a set of 16" hihats I had modded. Well those hihats werent weird enough for you all so this time I got a set of Baldman Percussion Junk Hats and a 14" Sabian AAX Zen Effects cymbal to use as a hihat top. Plus I got a Sabian Rocktagon, Wuhan Koi Conical China, a 24" Zildjian Gong type thing, and a Spiral Crash! All of which are just a bit weird...

Can You Make a $100 Drum Set Sound Good? This is something I wanted to figure out after asking if I could make a kids drum set sound good. I wanted to see how much money it took to upgrade a used drum kit I found on craigslist. The kit is a basic beginner drum set you would find at any music store. It's a Sound Percussion Labs kit and came with the stock snare drum and Agazarian cymbals. I started off with tuning the stock heads, then replacing them with new heads and upgrading the cymbals a few times. Pretty simple to do, but kinda pricey!

Today were checking out some weird drum hacks! Imagine 5 Minute Crafts, but for drums... Ever wanted to complicate your bass drum muffling technique and carry around a bike tire pump? Well you're in luck! But Tiktok drums are kinda interesting too. Just reverse your snare side head if its too worn out and won't tighten up enough. Concert toms are somehow making a comeback, but whats the best way to turn a regular drum into one? Maybe Remo Silentstrokes are the answer? Ringy Snare? Just fill it with silicone! But my favorite by far is using a microphone as a bass drum beater

Every drummer has used moon gel at some point in their life. Some use a gel here and there, but others go all out. So why not just use one giant moon gel instead of 14 little moon gels on one drums? I wanted to see what it would take to first made a giant moon gel, but also what it would sound like on a drum set. Not the most practical of diy projects, but still fun!

Thats right, I'm Testing 5 More Drum Hacks! Sometimes they blow your mind and sometimes they kinda, sorta, barely work. Either way, these are some that I've been wanting to try out for awhile now. First is something DW told me to do to my drum set. Dom Lombardi, founder of DW Drums, shows us that flipping over your floor tom legs reduces the sustain of the drum. Kinda funny because DW's whole thing is about the tone/sustain of their shells. Anyways... another classic trick made famous by Simon Phillips is sticking a paint can in your kick drum to tighten up the sound. There was a very subtle difference with it in vs out, but it does tighten up the sound! Sounds Like A Drum is a great channel on YouTube that talks about all the nerdy stuff that drummers think about. They did an episode on some cheap and easy drum hacks and one that stuck with me was about a product used for making bass drum hoop protectors. Out of all the stuff I've tried for hoop protectors there solution is by far the easiest/cheapest/most effective way to add one to your drum! Man, I didn't realize how much bass drum stuff was in this episode. Oh well, on my visit to Drumeo we filmed a video about 25 drum hacks and one thing I talked about was adding a felt pad to a wooden beater to change its sound. I would suggest finding the softest one you can find since the one I used didn't make the craziest difference. Use the link at the top of the description and sign up for a free month of Drumeo and check out my series called "DIY Drum Experiments." I show that hack there and it worked better for whatever reason. Who cares tho, I doubt you made it this far reading lol. Last on the list is an age old hack about reviving a dented up drum head with a heat gun. Something I talked about in my first testing 5 drum hacks video. Oh the good ole days...

These are some of the WEIRDEST cymbals I've ever seen... The further you go down the drum rabbit hole you end up finding stuff like this! The Zildjian Raw Crash and Gong Sheet are actually somewhat popular cymbals, but still fall under the weird category. After I got a Raw Crash I knew I needed more haha. It started with a 22" Flat Bosphorus cymbal blank. They actually saw my DIY Stack Clap video and said they could sell flat blanks (to make a more accurate version of the Stack Clap), but I decided to just get a big ole flat piece of bronze lol. I had bought a cymbal from someone on Reverb and they mentioned a blank they had and thought I would be interested in it, which I 100% was! That one has a bell but is still very trashy and "un-cymbaly."
I figured if any of the blanks sounded too weird, or were unfit for a drum set, I could cut them up and do something with them, or even get them turned into regular cymbals. Always open to any ideas to with them!
