The original video was taken down 18 months ago due to copyright issues on the film clip used. At the time it was SOUL of the North's flagship video with 43,000 clicks. Ever since, I've wanted to repost this track, which in my opinion, is Ian Levine's finest production. I know there are many tubes of the song now, so I hope I've put something together that is both satisfying and fizzes to the pulse of this great northern soul & disco favourite.

Here's a track from 1964. It's only in recent times that the studio musicians have become better known as the 'Funk Brothers'. The Motown house band were never credited on records - I think the best known conglomeration was known as Earl Van Dyke and the Soul Brothers. One of Don Covay's last releases for Atlantic.*UPDATE : Don Covay, leader of Don Covay & the Goodtimers, reportedly passed away Friday (January 30) at the age of 76. Born in Orangeburg, South Carolina, his family moved to Washington, DC in the '50s where he sang in their gospel group before moving on to secular music with the Rainbows (a group that also included Marvin Gaye and Billy Stewart) in 1955. In 1957, Don joined Little Richard's Revue as a solo artist (while driving Richard's limousine) and in 1960 he formed the Goodtimers. His composition, "Pony Time," reached #60 in 1961, though it was a #1 hit later that year by Chubby Checker. Recording both with and without the Goodtimers, Don had a spotty recording career. His song "Seesaw" (written with Steve Cropper) got to #44 in 1965, but was a top ten hit for Aretha Franklin. Elijah & the Ebonies SOUL of the North : tolpuddlemans channel 2014-05-10 | Matched to the dance sequence Varsity Drag in the 1947 movie 'Good News', starring June Allyson and Peter Lawford.Hot Grits!!! was released on the Capsoul label in 1974, but the track (minus vocals) was released prior to that as 'Pure Soul'. Elijah Hawthorne led a funk band who made several derivative records, of which "Hot Grits" is probably the most recognized. Saxophonist Melvin Burton was also part of Elijah's band. Melvin was a Tenor and Alto sax player who gained notoriety as a youth playing for Moses Dillard. Very little else is known.
