Healing the Earth, The Real Work of Our Time Facing Future 2023-01-05 | Eco Restoration is critical for the survival of life on our planet. At the forefront is John D. Liu whose #CommonlandFoundation has fostered 55 large scale projects around the world. Siham Said, of the Habiba Community in South Sinai, Maximilian Abouleish-Boes, Sustainable Development Lead at the SEKEM community and Naglaa Ahmed, Manager of the Egyptian #Biodynamic Association describe their successes in reviving hydrological cycles and ecological function to what was once dried up land. Beyond Maladaptation Facing Future 2022-12-22 | Around the world, many projects are being promoted with claims that they are helping #Adaptation to climate change. But many of them raise concerns over equality and human rights, while nearly all have significant carbon and ecological footprints. A more honest approach requires that we break with past assumptions. Initiatives, based on the systems that allowed global heating to reach a crisis, will not help us respond well to that crisis, as it worsens over time. Policy and funding must catch up with previously expressed commitments, and beyond that, initiatives need to consider the bad-to-worse scenarios and address the psychological aspects of adaptation.We need to support the people who are actually working to restore the natural balance of our planet, like our guest, Dr. Stella Nyambura Mbau, who describes her work with #RegenerativeAgroforestry in sub-Saharan Africa. Whats Happening at COP15? Facing Future 2022-12-15 | John D. Liu and Paul Beckwith give an update from The #Biodiversity Conference in Montreal, as #COP15 closes in on the final agreement. Raya Salter and Dale Walkonen join them for a look at the #30by30 proposal, which aims to set aside 30% of the world's lands and oceans for Nature by 2030. But what does that mean? Which lands, who will be in charge, will indigenous people determine the actions that are taken, will funds be made available to them? These are among the questions that now hang in the balance. CLIMATE JUSTICE, COP27 Facing Future 2022-11-15 | #XiyeBastida, the 20-year-old Mexican activist and Dr. Stella Nyambura Mbau, whose work in Sub Saharan Africa fosters climate resilience, give firsthand testimony of the 'Loss and Damage' that has finally been included in the COP agenda. Climate Honesty - Ending Climate Brightsiding Facing Future 2022-11-13 | Current data on emissions, atmospheric concentrations, global temperatures, and widening impacts are frightening. Even so, some of the most worrying science has been downplayed, while the emissions curve continues to rise. Clearly, such brightsiding, not only limits the climate agenda, but is neither scientific nor ethical. Dr. Jem Bendell exposes the danger of imagining that we can ignore facts, playing games with nature, because nature always wins. Dr. Ye Tao explains why efforts towards net zero, while essential, have the effect of reducing the global dimming that is the result of polluting particles, which is actually cooling the planet significantly: a terrifying dilemma that has been largely ignored. PLASTIC IS FOSSIL FUEL Facing Future 2022-10-20 | PLASTIC is a material so ubiquitous that we might call our age the Plasticine. This unfortunately durable form of fossil fuel breaks down into #microparticles that infiltrate and poison our water, our soils, and our bodies. Wildlife mistake plastic for food, babies chew on toys laden with chemicals. Some of it gets burned, polluting the air. Only 9% percent of it gets recycled. Plastic overwhelmingly impacts low income communities around the world. The less we make, the less we use, the better for everyone, especially for fence line communities who suffer from the toxic effects of its production and disposal. Dianna Cohen, co-founder and CEO of #PlasticPollutionCoalition, shows us how to get plastic out of our lives. From packaging to toothpaste, there are alternatives. Regulating the Fashion Industry - An Ecological Necessity Facing Future 2022-08-27 | Producing more carbon emissions than all the international flights and maritime shipping combined, while consuming and polluting huge amounts of water - fashion is ecologically unsustainable. Eco Restoration is Happening! Facing Future 2022-07-07 | People in John D. Liu’s #EcoRestoration Camps are bringing back #biodiversity by restoring whole ecosystems on land that had been degraded by agriculture, overgrazing, mining and industry. A former filmmaker, John dreamed of camping on the land and bringing it back to life. It turned out that many people shared this dream and were willing to make it a reality. There are now over a hundred such camps, and the movement is expanding around the world. Nature's amazing resilence is evident once #HydrologicalCycles return. Rights of Nature Facing Future 2022-06-24 | Laws that recognize the Rights of Nature may have the power to stop the #TarSands Line 3 #Pipeline, which would carry the dirtiest oil on the planet. The White Earth Band of Ojibwe has brought a case on behalf of Manoomin, or wild rice, against the State of Minnesota to stop the construction of the notorious oil pipeline project from Canada which, despite indigenous protest, persists. Raya Salter is joined by Thomas Linzey, Senior Legal Counsel for the Center for Democratic and Environmental Rights, and Frank Bibeau, tribal attorney for the White Earth Band of Ojibwe, who also works with the 1855 Treaty Authority and Honor the Earth.
