Tamarind Prawns is topped with generous amounts of crispy shallots and spring onions. The sweet and sour tamarind sauce is delicious but beware - it's super sweet so you need something else to balance the flavors. Prawns are huge, and deep fried so the shell is edible.
Tom Yam Khai Pla has prawns, fish slices, squid and was very spicy but unfortunately way too salty for me. I do like the flavors but I think the chef may have put a double dose of sodium in my soup...it was so salty it's difficult to eat.
Overall, the food is good and came with a side of complimentary greens. I had a soda water and one rice and the bill came up to 525 THB (RM64) which is a great price for that many jumbo shrimp.

The distinctive triangle huts are air-conditioned and have running hot water (albeit with a basic shower head). There's also a toilet inside your hut, so don't worry about having to drop a big one off in a shared facility. You probably wouldn't need the air con though as this place is really chilly at night. We went for the units with a private jacuzzi and it was the best RM488 we spent!
The rooms are very clean, which was a relief since we spent the previous night at the disgustingly dirty Grand Ion Delemen Hotel. I also liked how they have a table and chair setup outside and the entire patio is also yours - the area is gated off with a small wooden gate. The best part is the jacuzzi though - this entire hot tub is yours and yours only. There's also a public jacuzzi outside which is of a similar size so I highly recommend paying a bit more to get your very own hot tub.
Our hut is one of the furthest unit, which is great for privacy. That are also has a waterfall and river barely 3 meters from your patio and it's lovely to hear the soft roar of running water lulling you to sleep at night.
Music by InfractionMichelin Awarded Chicken Rice in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysiasixthseal2023-01-11 | Nam Heong Chicken Rice was recently awarded with a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand. I went to check it out for lunch today since I had a work appointment in the area.
Their signature steamed village chicken was decently poached but not as impressive as some other chicken rice stalls. Texture wise, there are other places which stands heads and shoulders above them. Taste wise, I felt the flavors were lacking and I tried to spice this up with their ginger dip, which was just ok. Their unusual chilli sauce does not have the rich consistency of other chicken rice places - it is rather dilute and tasted one-dimensionally of vinegar.
Roast pork was similarly lacking in oomph and flavor, although the skin was nicely crispy and crunchy. Char siew was nice but not the best I've had. Rice had no detectable fragrance or flavor. Complimentary soup was completely tasteless.
Lunch was RM36.40 for 1 pax which was a lot higher than average for chicken rice. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad I tried it and collected the Bib but I doubt I will be back. I highly recommend you try it for yourself though.
I am a Michelin fanboy but I have to respectfully disagree with the inspector's evaluation for Nam Heong. 😅
Music by Infraction5-Star Beach Resort with Water Park in Setiawan, Peraksixthseal2023-01-09 | Did you know there's a new 5-star beachfront resort in Sitiawan, Perak? DoubleTree by Hilton Damai Laut Resort took over from Swiss-Garden Beach Resort Damai Laut recently. This is a beautiful seaside resort in located inside a secluded and peaceful country club opposite Pulau Pangkor. We decided to celebrate Syrus' birthday here and we were impressed by the service and facilities!
They give out their famous DoubleTree warm chocolate chip cookies upon check-in and we booked a beach view unit which overlooks the coconut trees flanking the seaside. The water park is very feature-packed for an in-house hotel waterpark with water slides, huge water buckets, multiple pools, water play areas etc. This is greet value for kids as it's free for all guests and before you wonder, no, it's not open for outside visitors.
For the full experience (and coz we were lazy to drive 30 min into Sitiawan), we also had dinner at their in-house restaurant Hot Pot, which serves buffet hot pot. The prices are very reasonable for a resort of this caliber, but alas, the food was not the best.
Buffet breakfast was served in a beautiful terrace with stunning views of the sea. It is one of the best breakfast views we've had in recent memory. I highly recommend DoubleTree Hilton in Damai Laut for a relaxing and serene vacation. The service is good too.

This restaurant is run by Chef Evert Onderbeke, whom you can see in action at the open kitchen.
Beef flank tartare was nothing short of spectacular. It pairs so well with the horseradish sorbet and ponzu caviar. I thought having ice cream on top and ponzu that looks like salmon eggs (it's spherified with sodium alginate I think) was brilliant. Most importantly, flavors were well-balanced and complex. Escargots in olive oil and served with toasted brioche was also nice.
Mains was a whole lemon sole that's longer than a fork! This is a huge serving and the fish was cooked well. Duck confit was a bit on the dry side though.
Desserts were excellent. We loved the strawberry mousse with tons of texture from feuilletine. The warm brownie with caramel ice cream was spot on too.
Lunch came up to RM371.85 for 2 pax 3-course lunch menu (RM95++/pax) and Syrus' fish and chips. I ordered a glass of house wine for only RM25++ (normally restaurants price this RM30++). The portions are huge and we LOVED the well-balanced and complex beef tartare starter. Lemon sole was also done well. They have potential and it's certainly worth a try! Lunch set menu with 3-courses for RM95++/pax is great value.
Music by InfractionALIYAA: MICHELIN Awarded Sri Lankan Restaurant in Bukit Damansara, KLsixthseal2022-12-29 | Aliyaa is one of the 15 restaurants in KL that was recently awarded with a Bib Gourmand in the Michelin Guide 2023 Kuala Lumpur and Penang.
We made a reservation at ALIYAA for Christmas Eve and tried their Christmas menu, which is available throughout December and replaces their normal Aliyaa Experience Menu, which is not available while the Christmas Menu is running.
The items in both menus mirror each other. Both are well balanced and represented with fish, prawn, chicken, mutton, eggplant, cashew, and sambal dishes with rice. The Christmas menu also features roasted spring chicken and an extra dessert of Christmas fruit cake for a festive spin.
We were served Crab Meat Samosa as the starter. This was deep fried to perfection and came with a few deep fried curry leaves. I was seriously impressed by the generous amounts of crab meat inside this beauty. The heat level can be on the higher side but that's what's exciting about Aliyaa.
The soup course is Chicken Mulligatawny, which is a curry based soup made with diced vegetables and chicken. There's also chickpeas, potatoes and carrots inside and it's also quite spicy, but delicious. I later heard from the chef that a lot of their food is spicy, as they use authentic Sri Lankan recipes.
The Christmas menu came on a nice weaved rattan serving basket and has all the main dishes flanking curry leaf basmati rice. This looks like one of those floating breakfasts served in your resort's private pool in Bali or Phuket. There's:
Roasted Spring Chicken Devilled Fish Mutton Curry Prawn Peratal Eggplant Salad Cashew and Pea Curry Nettili Sambol
We particularly enjoyed the devilled fish, which had a beautiful balance of flavors. I thought it was chicken at first, as the fish has been either fried or baked till it was very firm. The prawn peratal also went down very well. The entire prawn has been deep fried so you can eat the head of the shrimp together with the complex dry curry spices. My wife also enjoyed the eggplant salad, which is surprising as she doesn't normally like eggplant or brinjal due to the sightly mushy texture. Aliyaa's eggplant salad comes with thinly sliced eggplant that has been deep fried till all the moisture is extracted. It's crispy and goes well with the rice.
Same thing with the nettili sambol. This dry, granular sambal is made from fish floss. I thought it was dried shrimp at first coz the umami and seafood flavor was so pronounced it tastes like sundried shrimp. I checked with Chef Sivarajah and he mentioned it was fish, not prawn. This sambal is very more-rish with rice!
Cashew and pea curry was also very unique and the size of the cashews are XL, which is great news for cashew lovers like me. Another of my favorites is the mutton curry, which we finished in no time.
For desserts, we were served with Sweet Appam, which was flavored with shredded coconut cooked with palm sugar or coconut sugar. We've eaten 3 different types of appam at Aliyaa now and all were very good. I love the fluffy center and the crispy edges. I still prefer the egg appam but this is a great finisher for their Christmas menu.
We were also served with 2 pieces of Christmas fruit cake for the finishing act. This was quite sweet but very good when eaten in moderation. Syrus enjoyed a bite too but my wife doesn't like fruitcakes. I generally don't either but I'm more than okay with eating it once in a long while.
The bill came up to RM360.75 for dinner. The Christmas or Experience menu is RM128++ per pax with a minimum of 2 pax and we also ordered drinks and appam. For the food and ambience, it's good value.
Ask for the window seats on first floor for the best seats in the house. They truly deserve their MICHELIN Bib Gourmand.

I love exploring the Bib Gourmand list coz it's where the authentic, local, value-for-money eating is at.
Dancing Fish is a Malay-Indo that specializes in their namesake "dancing fish" - a deep-fried tilapia which is served partially filleted and standing up! We went over the weekend and the food exceeded our expectations. Everything was delicious with all hits and no misses. I particularly enjoyed how delicately they treat tofu - it's fried to perfection with the most tender jiggly interior and a crispy exterior. Flavors were complex and delicious!
We went for the 2A Set Menu for 2 pax and added on some dishes:
Tauhu Tempeh Sambal Kicap with Keredok The tofu was fried exceedingly well - soft on the inside and crisp on the outside.
Dancing Fish with Sambal Dabu Dabu Their flagship dish of impossibly crisp fish with sweet, spicy and slightly acidic sambal. Delicious!
Ayam Panggang with Asam Sauce Very smoky grilled chicken with a sweet marinade and a sour dipping sauce. Yum.
Gulai Pucuk Paku Creamy and goes very well with rice.
Tauhu Telur A tower of jiggly soft tofu deep fried to a crispy exterior with egg floss. Goes super well with their spicy peanut sauce.
Cucumber Latte A very interesting cucumber and latte mixture which tastes refreshing.
Kedondong with Plum Yummy and thirst quenching.
Cendol Their signature dessert. Very creamy from the generous santan and rich gula Melaka. I wanted the Sweet Potato with Coconut Scrapings and Ice Cream but they sold out today.
The food exceeded our expectations and the service by a Ferduas was welcoming and faultless. Bill came up to RM190+ which was great value for this environment and the amazing and complex flavors. Please give yourself some time for eating - we spent slightly over 2 hours here. Highly recommended! 👍🏻

Music by InfractionA Trip to Kuala Lumpur Bird Park in KL, Chez Gaston by Rendez-Vous, Rush Roasterysixthseal2022-11-23 | KL Bird Park is a tropical paradise for visiting Caucasian tourists. Malaysians will likely consider this place hot and humid and wonder why they're trapezing in the equatorial heat and moisture instead of cooling off in an air-conditioned mall. We decided to bring Syrus here so he can see some birds up close and finally get over his fear of ostriches (he was accidentally bitten/pecked by one a few months back).
Spoiler alert: He still finds ostriches intimidating.
We also had lunch at Chez Gaston by Rendez-Vous - a Bangsar French restaurant/bistro run by Chef Florian Nigen (who is actually from France). They have an excellent value prix fixe lunch menu for only RM39++ for 3 courses. I highly recommend this place for reasonably priced authentic French food. Their impossibly creamy crème brûlée is out of this world!
We fueled up at Rush Roastery before heading to KL Bird Park as we needed the caffeine to keep up with Syrus. The coffee here is decent, and they have a lot of interesting local and unique twists on coffee beverages. There's a promo for 2 drinks for RM20 for local favorites right now. My only minor quibble is that their roast is a bit too acidic for my tastes.
Would we recommend KL Bird Park? Yes! It's definitely worth a visit if you have kids, especially kids below 3 years old (free entry). Adult Malaysians only need to pay RM35/pax which is decent value for the amount of entertainment you get. You can easily spend the entire afternoon here.

I was under the influence of the recently legalized THC-containing edibles so naturally, I found everything DELICIOUS with a capital D, a capital E, and every other word screaming in size 40 BOLD font.
I ordered a plate with everything and LOVED the crispy pork, BBQ pork char siew and homemade sausage. As for sauces, I was given two dips - the usual chilli vinegar and a sweet plum sauce-like soy based sauce. The chili dip is out of this world! Spicy, acidic, and bright, it's the perfect accoutrement to smoked duck.
I also thoroughly enjoyed the sides of raw spring onions, lettuce and chilli they give. That's ingenious for cutting the strong and heavy flavors. They should do that over here in Malaysia too. The soup was also nicely seasoned an I can honestly and easily destroy 5 plates of this.
I did not coz I had a reservation for 1 Michelin star PRU later that night. I am still filled with food regret.
Highly recommended, no pun intended.

Restoran Ho Poh in Bandar Puteri Puchong is a lei cha specialty shop which serves an excellent example of lei cha with delicious sides like their homemade egg tofu and vinegar pork leg.
Warakuya Japanese Restaurant occupies a 3-storey building and has free valet parking for customers, which is important in this congested area. The food is decent and prices higher than average but it's comfortable.
We have never been to Restoran Leong Ah despite living here for years. It has good ratings in Google and they are well deserved - food here is nice, especially their specialty paper wrapped chicken. I also enjoyed the pork two ways.
M Ice Cream is a chain of ice creams that serves affordable gula apong ice cream for the masses. It's great for what it is and the Malay girl speaks perfect Chinese!
Mama Mee Kepong is overrated and nothing more than plain Thai instant noodles topped with frozen mass-market items like duck breast, which you can get in supermarkets and frozen food groceries. There's nothing special so I am puzzled at their continued popularity.

Deep Fried Fish with Dry Curry Paste is their flagship dish and rightly so. Wow. Just wow. I love the salty, savory dry chilli paste on top and the fish was fried perfectly.
Paco Fern Coconut Soup with Shrimp provides a nice creamy change of pace and texture and went well with the other dishes.

Bee Bee is a nondescript wooden home serving the best homemade pin apple tarts in Malacca. This is really someone's home and not a shop but don't hesitate to waltz to their front door to order a box of pineapple tarts as they are a home baker that accepts walk-in orders. They were very good and not too sweet!
It was our last day so after checking out, we drove back to KL but not before stopping at 芙蓉烧蟹 (Seremban Seafood Village) for an early dinner. They are famous for their baked crabs but I also love their lamb claypot dish, which was very savory and flavorful and goes swimmingly with their chilli dip. Yum!
The Daily Fix is a hidden café located inside a nondescript store that sells fabric. The only sign it's there (besides Google Maps) is a cardboard standee in front. This place has been getting tons of buzz and we needed to wait for a table coz it was packed. However, the food was underwhelming and very mediocre. It's generic cafe fare which you can get at any random neighborhood eatery that's not particularly good. Their famous pandan gula melaka pancakes were so dry it literally sucked moisture from my mouth. Maybe they were having a bad day.
Sin Hiap Hin is the renowned Melaka shoplot bar run by an old aunty which has been around for 100 years. Back in the days, fishermen would come in the early morning after their night fishing trips, get drunk, and have a few gentlemanly fights before retiring home. You won't find Glenfiddich or Macallan here - they carry local intoxicating spirits and liqueurs only.
Wild Coriander is a well-rated restaurant in Jonker Street which serves delicious Nyonya fare - including a small bowl of ayam buah keluak priced at RM39.90. Eyebrow raising prices aside, the food is good and we enjoyed dining here for our last night in Melaka. The rice dish with 4 different types of rice was very IG-friendly too!

We feasted on 3 burgers at the best burger joint in Melaka. The Pork Belly Burger was both decadent and delicious, the Aloha Burger with pineapple was yum, and the beef burgers were juicy and more-ish too. I love the watermelon chunks they serve with their burgers. No complaints. Among the best burgers we've ever had and comes highly recommended.
MAMEE Jonker House allows you to create personalized cup noodles with your own mix of soup base and toppings. However, the best part is the doodling. The Noodle Doodle lets you draw and color the cup to your liking and this RM15/cup experience makes for a fun afternoon and a great souvenir.
SamFu is one of the best-rated Nyonya food restaurants in Malacca and the one preferred by locals. The food is really good! Babi Chilli Garam, Pork Pongteh, the beautifully plated Okra with Dried Chilli Paste were all hits, as were the cendol.
We stumble across a hidden gem that's easily Malacca's best Nyonya food restaurant. Unpretentious, with friendly service and excellent food, it's no wonder locals keep this secret closely-guarded. The place was packed during lunch but we managed to get a small side table near the cashier. Mandy's cousin, who is a transplanted local, told us about this place. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who loves Nyonya food. Their pai tee is a must-order.
Next, we headed to Melaka Butterfly & Reptile Sanctuary (a 30 min drive from town) but not before a coffee pit stop. The park has TONS of animals of various types - not just reptiles and butterflies. We were very impressed by the sheer variety of animals there. This is the perfect afternoon activity for occupying kids of all ages but the outdoor areas can be very hot.
Syrus almost got heatstroke so my wife brought him back to the hotel while I went to tapau chicken rice balls. Wilson Chicken Rice was sold out so I went to Jonker Chicken Rice Ball since my wife wanted some sugarcane juice from Jonker Night Market. Do not go there. It's a tourist trap with terrible food. The most common repeated phrase you'll hear in this vlog is "Yummy Syrus?". I still can't stop saying it. Hahaha.
Syrus was super hot and became almost non-responsive during our long, hot day in Melaka. I got him a durian ice cream, air mata kuching, and a mango shake to cool his tiny toddler body down. He perked up significantly after all these thirst quenchers.
We had a 5D/4N trip to Melaka recently. This was our first day, where we drove from KL to Seremban for a quick lunch pit stop at Quinn Seremban Beef Noodles before continuing south to Melaka. We stayed at The Pines for central base where we could explore the historical city.
My wife and Syrus has never been on the revolving glass lift tower thingy in Melaka so we went, although it wasn't great value for money. It's worth visiting once for the experience though. The 7 minute ride costs RM17 for adults and RM11 for children below 12.
Next, we headed to the Red Square to visit the heritage buildings and ruins in the area. There are many attractions like A Famosa (Porta de Santiago) and St Paul’s Church which you can reach on foot easily but parking can be challenging. We parked at a paid car park above Stadthuys.
We ended our first day by grazing through the Jonker Street Night Market. I am of the view that the food at night markets is repetitive, soulless and similar throughout Malaysia so it wasn't anything special. It's just something people do while on vacation in Melaka.
We had the Miang Kham appetizer, which the waitress warned us comes with Chinese kale instead of cha phlu, or wild betel leaves. It still tasted nice but would have been even better with cha phlu leaves, which has very limited availability in Malaysia. It was served with all the right ingredients and their palm sugar-fish sauce drizzle was spot on.
The waitress also recommended their Tawt Mun Goong or fried shrimp cakes, which was nice in a forgettable sort of way, if that makes sense.
We got the pad thai nuea yang or pad thai with grilled beef to share, and it came in a huge tin platter with a generous portion of sliced beef steak on top. There are the usual sugar, fish sauce, chilli flakes et al on your table to bring your pad thai to Flavortown. I thought this dish was excellent value for RM29, especially with that lavish piece of meat on top. Taste-wise the pad thai was appetizing, but falls short of spectacular.
Again, it was not bad per se, just not great. It's a matter of expectations due to their parent outlet's high acclaim and feature in the Bib Gourmand list.
The Tub Tim Krob, commonly translated as Red Ruby is Baan Padthai's signature dessert, which. pairs ruby water chestnuts with coconut juice granita, young coconut flesh, and candle-smoked coconut syrup. It's served in a unique deconstructed way which requires some assembly. The individual ingredients are put into cute little IKEA type glass bottles and you're given a mug to mix everything in.
I loved how smoky this shaved ice dessert is. They manage to pack so much smoke into the syrup that it tastes like the inside of a BBQ smoker (in a good way). This is a must order if you come.
Overall Baan Padthai is not bad, but perhaps the consistency of the Malaysian restaurant is not on par with the Bangkok one. It's tasty but not to the level I'll expect from a Bib Gourmand outlet. I know the award does not travel and only applies to the flagship Bangkok restaurant, but I still expected better food that what was served that night.
The bill came up to slightly over RM123 which was slightly below average spend, coz we shared a main dish. Would I be back? Likely not, but I'll visit their flagship Bangkok outlet with the Bib Gourmand when I'm there.

Music by InfractionThe Best Restaurant in Phuket Old Town - Raya Restaurantsixthseal2022-10-13 | Raya is certainly Phuket's most famous restaurant, located inside a 130 year old house. This was not my first time here. I feasted in Raya in 2013 too and it was already very well-known and well-regarded then. Raya have done so well they have many sister restaurants in Phuket like One Chum and Chom Chan, which shares similar menu items like their powerfully delicious Kaeng Pu Bai Cha Phlu or fresh crab meat chunks in yellow curry and Wild Betel Leaf. It's worthy to note that all of these restaurants have been awarded the Michelin Bib Gourmand - a testament to their food quality and consistency.
Raya's version of this crab yellow curry is the best I've ever had in Phuket, or anywhere else for that matter. It's the greatest symphony of staggeringly generous chunks, yes, meaty chunks of the sweetest freshly steamed crab meat cooked in a wonderfully complex yellow curry scented with cha plu leaves - wild betel leaves that really makes this dish and ties all the flavors together. Man, I can still remember the delightful smell and taste of this in my most beautiful dreams. It's almost enough to give you a food orgasm.
This thing of beauty is paired with fluffy wraps of the most slippery rice vermicelli, which acts as the perfect vehicle to soak up that precious, flavorful yellow curry. What a dish. Wow. You MUST, you MUST order this if you're in Phuket. There is no dish like this in the world. You can eat this by itself but better paired with other dishes so you can mix all the different flavors to create your own opus magnum in your mouth.
The Mu Hong or Phuket slow braised pork belly with black pepper and garlic was very good flavor-wise, but there was a sizable piece of lean pork that was overcooked and tasted way too stringy. The soul has been sucked out of that piece of pork, let me tell you that.
I also ordered the Stir Fried Sa-taw (or stink bean) with Shrimp Paste. Mark Weins had this and highly recommended it. It came with a few large prawns as well, which were perfectly cooked. This salty and smelly dish works well to balance the sweet and savory flavors in my other dishes and I enjoyed it as a part of the whole meal. That said, it is not something I think stands well alone, it lacks the intensity and flavors to be a starring dish.
I remember reading that a Chinese banquet is not about having powerful flavors for every dish - some dishes are intentionally blander, as a palate cleanser of sorts, or to balance out the strong flavors of other dishes. That was the reason I ordered the stink bean dish - you need an interlude for the crashing crescendo or the symphony would be too overwhelming and intense.
My biggest regret was not having the stomach space to finish all my food. I think I even left 1-2 chunks of crab meat and that precious, delicious yellow curry. I literally could not eat anymore. I was not just dangerously close to puking, I actually threw up. When I had dinner later that night, the sheer volume of added food made me regurgitate a little in my mask. Oops.

Music by InfractionEating SAGO WORMS (Coconut Worms) in Sarawak For The First Time!sixthseal2022-10-12 | Sago worms or coconut grubs are commonly eaten in Sarawak by the locals. I've eaten live sago worms in Mukah several times, and even uploaded a video to YouTube 12 years ago:
Sago worms can be eaten both raw (tastes creamy like avocado) and grilled (which turns it into a shrimp flavored chip). They're both good in their own way - it's not eaten for the shock factor, many locals enjoy eating sago grubs.
It's Lily's first time eating coconut worms so we headed to Mak Borneo and started with some liquid courage. We ordered an entire 1.1 liter tower of Pamoga Calamansi Lime - a langkau based cocktail. Langkau is our local moonshine - a powerful 40% abv liquor distilled from tuak, or rice wine. It tastes deceptively harmless due to the high sugar content but these bad boys will give novice drinkers a nasty surprise. Or a pleasant one, depending on how you see it. The waitress told us this concoction has 500ml of langkau inside and after finishing the entire thing, we do not doubt that claim.
Mak Borneo is a very popular Dayak food restaurant in Sibu. It's always packed, and you can even see Chinese families with older generations dining here. I have to mention this as you know how set elderly Foochows are in their palates and flavor preferences. To be able to sell them on native flavors is indeed quite remarkable.
Umai fish is a must-order - a local ceviche-like dish that originates from Mukah. Back in the days, fishermen will squeeze a bit of lime over their freshly caught fish and eat it with sago pearls as a quick meal while out at sea. This is very delicious and we love the generous slices of fish inside.
Midin is a local Sarawakian fern much beloved by Sibu people and Mak Borneo's version is levelled up with langkau. Yes, this most dangerous local liquor makes an appearance again, but it works very well and tastes amazing. Many restaurants cook midin with home made Foochow red wine, so this tastes similar. The mild alcohol tinge is perfect here.
Pansoh babi was just ok for me. This is a traditional dish cooked inside bamboo and the goal is to mostly preserve the natural taste of the pork. Fatty pieces are in high demand normally but as modern office workers who don't need the calories, it was a bit much. Maybe I'll like it more if I had a field of padi to sow the next day.
Dabai fried rice uses dabai to fry with rice - a popular way of consuming dabai here, although I prefer eating it as is. But we needed some carbs to go with the dishes.
Dabai Milk is the very interesting RM15.30 drink that contains dabai - a local olive-like fruit which tastes like avocados. These two flavors go well together. Nice!

Yes! This humble street food has a long local heritage in Phuket due to immigration. The Southern part of Thailand saw the same settlement of Straits Chinese (or Peranakan) as Penang and Malacca in Malaysia. However, the Peranakan in Phuket married local Thai instead of local Malay. The original batch of Chinese immigrants to Phuket also came from the Southern part of China - Fujian, or Hokkien.
But wait, what is Hokkien Mee? Hokkien mee, literally "Fujian noodles", is a series of related Southeast Asian dishes that have their origins in the cuisine of China's Fujian (Hokkien) province. We all know that Hokkien Mee in Malaysia and Singapore is very different - two very close neighboring countries who shares the same heritage, and at one point in history was the same country.
The Phuket rendition of Hokkien Mee is closer to the Singapore style - thinner egg noodles with various seafood and pork.
Mee Ton Poe (Wong Wian Ho Nalika) was originally founded 70 years ago by the owner’s grandfather, who cooked his famous stir-fried noodles over a charcoal stove. Their Hokkien Mee has survived and thrived through 3 generations. You need to wait for these noodles as they're cooked individually one-by-one over a charcoal stove. The delicious and the pungent aromatics emanating from kitchen will make you sneeze.
I went for their signature Hokkien Noodles with a jiggly heat poached egg for 80 THB (around RM10). You can also add on pork rinds for 10 THB. This will add a bit of crunch to your noodles.
There are a bunch of accoutrements to go with your noodles - vinegar, chilli flakes, raw shallots, fish sauce. Shallots provide a burst of sharpness and sweetness which goes very well with the Hokkien noodles. The deeply savory gravy is also improved with a bit of pickled chilli in vinegar for heat, balance and acidity.
The Michelin Guide also recommends their Phuketian appetizer - spicy fish curry paste with betel leaf but unfortunately it was sold out when I was there. There are quite a few Hokkien Noodles with a Michelin recommendation in the guide, but this is the only one I've eaten so I can't compare it to the others. It's good though, and even at 3pm in the afternoon, there were a few locals and tourists slamming bowls of Hokkien Mee. Chef Rick Dingen of Michelin recommended Jampa - a restaurant I also patronize in the same trip, also cites Mee Ton Poe as the best stir-fried noodles in town.

Enoteca in TTDI, Kuala Lumpur.sixthseal2022-08-03 | Enoteca is an authentic Italian restaurant in TTDI with excellent reviews on Google. The service is exceptional but unfortunately the flavors fell short for us. That may be an artifact of our Malaysian palate with its preference for umami and strongly flavored dishes. Maybe Italians like underseasoned food. People often joke that ang moh food is bland and uninspiring and from my years living in New Zealand and Australia, I am inclined to agree.

It looks so nice even aunties and uncles also couldn't help snapping an #ootd there k. However, a more important question: How is the food?
Kafe Bali is a sister cafe to Bumbu Bali and serves Western fusion with an Indonesian twist - exactly the type of fare you'll see on the Aussie yobbo infested beaches of Kuta and the vegan yoga tourist invaded paddy fields of Sanur. I personally prefer Bumbu Bali but the food here isn't bad too!Delivered via Official KTM Train: Nasi Kandar from Penang!sixthseal2022-06-22 | You can now get nasi kandar delivered fresh from Penang to KL via Nasi Kandaq Transporter's collaboration with KTM. Best of all, it only costs RM10 for 3 packs and below! The maiden voyage was last Saturday and I went to KTM Distribution to pick up my nasi kandar and devoured my order from Nasi Kandar Imigresen Penang. 😋
There's something about nasi kandar from Penang that isn't easily replicated elsewhere. The sheer amount of spices and aromatics they use to turn the curries and kuah campur into this flavorful, aromatic, complex flavor bomb is unrivalled. Nothing beats nasi kandar from Penang and I guess that's why there's a demand for services like these. It's delicious and satisfying. The flavors intensify like a symphony, a crescendo in your mouth, it's like a party where the DJ builds the crowd up and drops the bass.

Sumitaba Japanese Kitchen is known for their Nagoya-style hitsumabushi unagi. 🪱 You can opt for a half serving of unagi for RM60 or a whole charcoal grilled eel for RM110. 🍱
The Nagoya style of eating divides the portion into 4 equal servings. You eat the first serving as is to taste the original flavors of the unagi. Next, you can mix up the flavors with wasabi, seaweed, Sansho pepper etc to explore different combinations. The third portion is eaten ochazuke style with dashi broth and the final serving is eaten whichever way you like it. 🤤
The unagi here is excellent. You may have seen the open flame in the start of the video - Sumitaba has a real charcoal grill in their kitchen which gives their unagi a delightfully smoky and rich taste. 😋Best Cafe in Balakongsixthseal2022-06-15 | Le Gardenz Cafe is the best cafe in Balakong for the sole reason there's no worthy competitors within a 5km radius. Her Last Day?!?sixthseal2022-06-09 | It's Vivian's last day and the Digital Marketing team went to Croutons Cafe by Gourmet Seductions for lunch to bid her farewell. Nimbus 4-course dinner to celebrate my dad's 73rd birthday! The food here is excellent, beautifully plated dishes with perfect flavor balance. The only dish I felt was weaker is the Miso Glazed Chicken Breast main. The others were flawless and we thoroughly enjoyed the food. The flavors are assertive here, which is a refreshing change. All the tables were taken, which is saying a lot for a fine dining venue on a weekday night. The bill came up to RM684.20 but that's coz I ordered a bottle of Merlot. You can get this menu for slightly more than RM165/pax, which is quite reasonable. 9/10. I was craving for nasi kandar on Sunday but unfortunately the good ones in Puchong were closed. I decided to drop by Nasi Kandar Shaaz on my way to Sunway Pyramid. I've never been here before but the ratings on Google Reviews are decent (3.8-4 star). 🤔 Unfortunately, I found the kuah campur to be thin and tepid, with none of the powerful spice-packed aroma and flavors I expect in a good nasi kandar. For me, kurang surr. 4/10.

We spent the evening at Kek Lok Tong (also spelled Gek Look Tong) - the largest and best limestone temple in Ipoh. There are many things to do and see here.
On our way back, we stopped for dinner at Restaurant Double Happiness in Slim River - possibly the best restaurant in that small town. They're famous for huge freshwater big head prawn, locally caught tapah freshwater catfish, hyperlocal paku (fern) vegetables and venison. All were delectable!

It's truly a hidden gem, serving up delicious nasi kandar with fried onions (bawang goreng). You can fully load it up with chicken, lamb, fish and sotong eggs. This is one of the best nasi kandar places in Penang and we fueled up before saying goobye to this foodie island.
Next, we drove from Penang to Ipoh for the second part of our trip. We checked into Sarang Paloh Heritage Stay - a boutique hotel and went to Concubine Lane (just 5 minutes walk) to check out this extremely touristy destination.
I don't get what Concubine Lane's appeal is. There's nothing local there - no local food, no local art, no local culture. It's a mishmash of trendy current pop culture - fried things on top of a soda bowl, vapid trinkets of little value, similar snacks you'll find at any pasar malam in Malaysia. We still went though. Hehe.
Dinner was at the popular Yum Yum Restaurant Ipoh, which serves an interesting hybrid of Nyonya, Thai and Chinese flavors. They're famous for their famous Yum Yum fried chicken drumsticks. We also had ostrich meat, pandan chicken, Thai egg and seafood tom yam soup. Everything was delicious and great value for only RM108.55!
