This trip took place in October of 2020, and Travis, Dakota, and I rode from Reedsport on the Oregon Coast to Crescent Lake entirely off road and in the backcountry. I Bought a Used Toy Hauler and it Sucks! Winter Camping Trip w/Friends. Dork in the Road 2023-03-08 | Buying a used toy hauler may be the biggest mistake I'll make in 2023. I'm no toy hauler expert, and I definitely should have taken someone with more toy hauler buying experience along with me when I bought this used toy hauler, because it's been kind of a pain in my butt the entire time. I've had a ton of toy hauler problems including: leaking water pump, leaking toilet, broken bed/couch, gross awning, and worst of all: the ceiling leaks very badly. I've put a ton of work into fixing my used toy hauler lemon and decided it was time to give it a bit of a field test, so I headed out on a winter camping trip with a few friends to see how this whole toy hauler camping thing works. Thankfully, it did reasonably well on this trip, but there's more work to do before I take this thing to Mojave California for the Get On ADV Fest in April. I Broke My New Insta360 Camera Setup! A Winters Evening Dual Sport Ride on the CRF300L Rally Dork in the Road 2023-03-01 | It's winter and it's freezing but with a break in the rain, I had to get out for a dual sport adventure on my Honda CRF300L Rally and try out my brand new Insta360 One RS motorcycle camera setup. Apparently I'm a lot harder on my gear than I thought because my Insta360 motorcycle kit selfie stick didn't last 10 minutes after I got off the pavement and onto the gravel before breaking and falling down behind the bike. Only my amazing Giant Loop Pronghorn Strap saved my 360 camera from being lost on the roadside. I did get some amazing footage of my Honda CRF300L rally riding at least, and with a few modifications I think I can still make this Insta360 One RS work for motovologging. The camera itself has been rock solid and looks great so far. Extreme Weather (Driving Rain and Snow) MSR Xplorer Adventure Motorcycle Jacket and Pants Test Dork in the Road 2023-02-15 | The new MSR Xplorer adventure motorcycle jacket and adventure motorcycle pants from Rocky Mountain ATV/MC are supposed to be a low-cost alternative to higher-end brands like Klim. This gear in particular is a direct challenger to the Klim Carlsbad ADV jacket and pants, but it costs just over half as much. Can a budget friendly set of adventure motorcycle gear actually be good? Will it stand up to the rigors of dual sport and adv motorcycle riding? I set out to find out with this extreme test of the MSR Xplorer jacket, pants, and gloves. I tested the MSR Explorer gear in driving rain on the highway, sleet, and full on snow in the woods, culminating with the most EXTREME test of waterproof motorcycle gear: the snow angel. After all this, my MSR Xplorer gear review is incredibly positive. This adventure motorcycle jacket and pants kept me dry and warm throughout my multi-hour winter weather adventure. 5 Things I Wish I Knew Before I Started Motorcycle Camping Dork in the Road 2023-02-13 | Motorcycle camping is a truly unique animal. It's a weird hybrid of car camping and backpacking where you can't take a lot of gear, but what motorcycle camping gear you do take doesn't have to be the most lightweight or expensive because you're carrying it on your motorcycle and not your back. I learned a lot of my motocamping skills the hard way, so I'm hopeful that these motorcycle camping tips for beginners will make your journey into the world of moto camping just a bit smoother and easier than mine was. The first thing I wish I knew while learning how to motorcycle camp is that volume is important when it comes to moto camping gear, but weight is less important. Another beginner motorcycle camping tip I wish I'd been aware of is just the sheer number of different ways to go camping on a motorcycle. You've got everything from fully loaded, trailer-pulling Honda Goldwings to super minimalist survivalist types moto camping off a dirt bike with a tarp and a short stick. When considering your motorcycle camping gear, it's important to remember that you have a lot less space for "just in case" items than you do in a traditional car camping setup, so a good piece of beginner motorcycle camping advice is to keep track of what you actually use on a trip and stop bringing along the pieces of camping gear that you never touch. Another big revelation: there's a big difference between a trip where you just head out to go motorcycle camping and another where you're just camping from the motorcycle in order to ride as fast and far as possible. Finally, it's important to remember that your motorcycle is not only a way to get to camp, but it's a way to transport you to town and back after you have your entire camping setup ready to go. Because of this, you don't need to carry everything you need to camp, because you can often get food and other items from a nearby town. This Winter Motorcycle Camping Trip Did NOT Go As Planned... Dork in the Road 2023-02-08 | I'm tired of winter and miss motorcycle camping a lot, so I decided it was time to head out on a winter motorcycle camping trip to the Oregon Coast. Our original plan was to motocamp at Devil's Lake State Park, but when we got there we discovered the park was closed because it was completely flooded. So...we had to improvise and find another nearby location for our winter camp motorcycle adventure. We had fabulous weather for this moto camping trip to the Oregon Coast and ended up at one of my favorite campgrounds: Beverly Beach State Park near Newport, Oregon. Winter camping in a tent is cold, but thanks to a big fire and great motorcycle camping gear, I stayed warm and cozy and had a great time motorcycle camping in winter with my buddies! ADV Myth Busting: Do You Need an ADV Helmet to Ride a Motorcycle Off Road? Dork in the Road 2023-02-01 | ADV/Dual Sport motorcycle helmets definitely look cool, but are they actually necessary to ride a motorcycle off road? Why do ADV helmets have peaks? What's the point of a peaked helmet in the first place? The good news is you absolutely do not need an ADV helmet to ride a motorcycle off road. Peaked motorcycle helmets definitely have some advantages that make them well-suited for off road motorcycle riding, but they're far from required. Let's talk about the advantages of peaked motorcycle helmets for off road riding (roost protection, sun visor, wider eyeport, longer chin bar) as well as the disadvantages (more wind noise, the helmet visor catches wind on the highway, etc...). We'll also cover some of the best adv helmets to consider, whether you're a brand new dual sport motorcycle rider or a seasoned ADV motorcycle veteran. At the end of the day, so long as your motorcycle helmet is ECE or Snell rated, still within it's workable lifespan, and actually on your head, you're probably good to go whether you choose to wear an ADV helmet or not. The Most Important Dual Sport/ADV Motorcycle Safety Gear YOU Arent Using... Dork in the Road 2023-01-30 | There is one piece of dual sport and adv motorcycle safety gear that transcends all other off road motorcycle safety equipment. Used properly, this item will prevent you from needing your first aid kit, medical supplies, tool kit, or other repair items. The most important piece of dual sport/adv motorcycle safety gear, in my opinion, is a satellite communicator like the Garmin InReach Mini 2. With a Garmin InReach, you can call for help and communicate with your rescuers, whether you need a helicopter evac, search and rescue, or you just forgot to bring the marshmallows when you left home. 2 way communication is what makes these satellite communicators so effective and useful for off road motorcycle adventures beyond the reach of cell phone service. It's important to wear all your off road motorcycle safety gear: helmet, jacket, good boots, etc... and to carry your survival, first aid, and motorcycle tools along as well, but the most important item is the one that can take the place of all of these pieces of adv safety gear when used properly. Communication and rescue are the most important priorities, and with an InReach Mini or other satellite communicator, you can get help as quickly as possible. ADV Myth Busting: To Sit or Stand When Riding a Motorcycle Off Road? Dork in the Road 2023-01-25 | It's a question as old as ADV motorcycle riding itself: when to stand and when to sit when riding a motorcycle off road. Many out there teach that you should be standing the entire time when riding an ADV bike off road and while this new ADV rider advice comes from a good place, it also ignores several pivotal aspects of ADV riding, perhaps most importantly that ADV and dual sport motorcycle riding is something we do over long periods of time, day after day in many cases, and it's important for new ADV motorcycle riders to conserve their energy to ensure they are as safe at the end of a long riding day as they are at the beginning. So, I'm here to shatter the myth that you HAVE to stand when riding a motorcycle off road. The truth is, there are plenty of situations when new dual sport and adventure motorcycle riders SHOULD be sitting down on the motorcycle. Obviously you need to stand when riding off road when the terrain is sketchy and you need to get into the habit of standing on a motorcycle when you are unsure or nervous about the terrain you're riding over. There are a ton of advantages to standing on a motorcycle, but it's also very tiring. That's why it is important for new and veteran ADV motorcycle riders alike to take advantages of opportunities to rest while riding the bike, and sitting while riding is the best way to do that. Soggy, Slippery, and SURPRISING First Off Road Ride on the Honda CRF300L Rally Dork in the Road 2023-01-16 | I've had this Honda CRF300L Rally for 2 days now, and soggy weather be damned, I'm getting out to ride and enjoy it. Riding the Honda CRF300L Rally off road for the first time was an absolute blast. It immediately took me back to the days riding my first Honda dual sport motorcycle in some of the same areas, but with an entirely new perspective. In this comprehensive Honda 300 Rally first ride we take the 300L Rally off road and on the highway, on logging roads, up a hill climb, and even on some ATV trails to see just how well it performs in all of the various situations that a dual sport motorcycle is supposed to be capable of. I'm happy to report that my overwhelming feeling after this first CRF 300 L Rally off road ride was "impressed." This is an incredibly confidence inspiring light adv bike, and I think anyone who hasn't seriously considered the Honda 300L Rally as a true all around, do it all bike, is mistaken. I know because I was one of those people who dismissed the Honda Rally specifically because I didn't understand what it was for and why you would every choose it over the regular Honda CRF300L. After riding this thing on and off the road, I see the light now. I'm a believer in the CRF 300 L Rally. My 3 Bag System Modular ADV and Dual Sport Motorcycle Tool Kit, Tire Changing Kit, First Aid Setup Dork in the Road 2023-01-09 | I've spent a few years refining my dual sport and adventure motorcycle tool kit and I think I've finally gotten it down to a system that works for me. Using 3 Possibles Pouches, I'm able to know I have all the dual sport or ADV tools I need, no matter which of my motorcycles I'm taking or how long of a trip I'm going out on. The secret to this dual sport motorcycle tool kit setup is the "3 bag system." My first bag is my "every ride" bag. This contains my full adv and dual sport motorcycle tire changing kit + a basic dual sport motorcycle tool kit that will hopefully get me through most smaller emergencies or mechanical issues. This kit contains all the adv tire changing tools I'll need as well, because I have tire iron wrenches and an allen key axle tool to fit each and every one of my dual sport and adventure bikes. For longer, more involved trips I add the second pouch. This pouch contains my rechargeable tire inflator and full, more involved adventure bike tool kit in my Klim Tool Pack. In this pouch I've got bigger and more useful tools like a socket wrench, duct tape, vise grips, pliers, extra sockets, and more. The third piece of the "3 Bag System" ADV bike toolkit is the First Aid pouch, inside which is my basic first aid kit and a couple extra tools that can really save my dual sport bike in a pinch: my battery jump starter and Tusk motorcycle tire repair kit for tubeless tires. With this setup, I can take just the right toolkit for the adv or dual sport bike I'm riding that day, whether I take one bag or all three depends on the ride and the conditions.
