Our walk today takes into the secret world of St James's with its many passages, courtyards and cellars. We're guided by a route described in Secret London by Andrew Duncan which starts at Piccadilly Circus and goes along Piccadilly. We then walk through the Wren Church of St James's Piccadilly to Jermyn Street and follow this into Bennet Street and then down a set of steps into Park Place and the home of the Royal Over Seas League. From here we find Blue Ball Yard and then Spencer House in St James's Place and another secret passage that leads into Green Park. From here a passageway takes us into Cleveland Row and St James's Palace. Moving towards Pall Mall we explore the wonderful Picking Place, Crown Passage, Angel Passage and King Street before returning to Jermyn Street and then back to Piccadilly Circus.

East End Architecture London Walking Tour | Stepney & Poplar (4K)

John Rogers 2023-09-03 | Inspired by Modern Buildings in London by Ian Nairn. A walk through Stepney and Poplar in East London following some of the architecture featured in Ian Nairn’s book, Modern Buildings in London first published in 1964. Our walking tour starts on Mile End Road and heads down White Horse Lane, once the main street of medieval Stepney. We then visit St Dunstan’s Church Stepney, originally built in 952 by Dunstan Bishop of London and further expanded in the 14th and 15th Century. We look inside the church, and marvel at the Saxon stone rood. Continuing down White Horse Lane we look at the Stepney Meeting churchyard and then turn in to Salmon Lane and Flamborough Street to the first of the buildings described by Nairn in his book.
Our walk takes in: The Danish Seaman’s Church on Commercial Road (1958), St. Paul’s Bow Common (1958-60), Flats and Maisonettes in Pekin Close (1951), Old People’s Home in Grundy Street (1951), and the Lansbury Neighbourhood and Chrisp Street Market (1950 onwards).

Origin of the name of Houndsditch in the City of London #london #londonhistory

John Rogers 2023-09-01 | Houndsditch was a very big, deep ditch that was dug just outside the Roman wall. It was a place where rubbish was dumped and amongst that would have been dead dogs. Or it could also alternatively and at the same time be that is where feral dogs came to scavenge for food. The hounds came to feed on the rubbish thrown over the Roman wall. One of the things thrown over that Roman wall was Eadric, the traitor He was called and he was an ealdorman of Mercia who betrayed the English by joining forces with King Cnut who became the King of England. And eventually he must have upset Cnut
because Cnut had him dragged through the city by his heels, burned with torches, decapitated, and then his body was thrown over the wall and into Houndsditch where it was said that even the dogs wouldn't feed on his body.

Where Charles Dickens lived in Bloomsbury #london

John Rogers 2023-08-02 | Tavistock Square was built on the site where Charles Dickens lived between 1851 and 1860,
and he wrote some of his greatest works here. He wrote part of A Tale of Two Cities, but he wrote Little Dorrit here, Hard Times and Bleak House. The area was demolished to make way for the square. Later on, Virginia Woolf also lived on Tavistock Square. She wrote A Room of One's Own while living at 52 Tavistock Square. Also To the Lighthouse, and Mrs. Dalloway. Bloomsbury’s an area of significant literary associations. But those two great authors produced those works here which is amazing, isn't it? "The coracle - also known as the currach, bull boat, quffa, parasil - is a small, keel-less boat. Their main uses has always been as a means for fishing or transportation. Today, certainly within Europe, their main use tends to be recreational, although in Wales a number of licences exist to permit use as a fishing vessel. In other parts of the world, particularly the Middle and Far East, they are still used for their original purpose - as a workboat for fishing or transportation. The coracle has a long history spanning thousands of years, evidenced in cave paintings of their use from the early Bronze Age and perhaps as far back as the Ice Age. This is the infamous Kingsway Tram Tunnel here at Holborn. It was the tunnel that linked Angel to Aldwych. And it was built after the Holborn slums were cleared and they took the opportunity to put a tram line through Holborn. It opened in 1906 and closed in 1952 on the tragic day that the trams were withdrawn from service in London. It is said to be deeply, deeply haunted. I think there might even be a tribe of troglodytes living in the Kingsway Tram Tunnel, or I may have just made that up.

The Hidden Bloomsbury Connection - a London walking tour (4K)

We start at Holborn Station and look at the Kingsway Tram Tunnel before walking up Southampton Row and visit Tavistock Square with its associations with Charles Dickens and Virginia Woolf. Dickens lived at the location where the British Medical Association and Woolf lived at 52 Tavistock Square, now the Tavistock Hotel. We cross Marchmont Street Leigh Street and find the Norfolk Arms a favourite pub of Kenneth Williams' mother Louie Williams.
Opposite the Norfolk Arms we find Collinge & Clark booksellers at 13 Leigh Street which was used as the exterior location for Black Books starring Dylan Moran and Bill Bailey.

Walking the dramatic landscape of the River Medway in Kent (4K)

Starting at Strand Leisure Park we pass Horrid Hill, Bloors Wharf, Eastcourt Woods and Otterham Creek. Kate is an expert of estuarine environments and we learn about the specific ecosystem of the Medway estuary and its industrial past.

It was such a lovely surprise to discover this newly pedestrianised area on the south side of Aldwych, around St Mary le Strand. What beautiful little piazza it is now a new open public space for London, which is particularly glorious in the sunshine.

The first part of the walk along the Bloomsbury ditch goes along Strand Lane this metal gate. looks a little bit unpromising but you can open it, look. So it takes us into Strand Lane, and I hope it still gives us a view of the Roman baths. In fact, I can see up there, which is great.

I joined them one morning along Shooters Hill Road in South London where they were accompanied by artist Anne Caron-Delion. Inspired by Alan Moore's retelling of his mentor, Steve Moore's relationship with Shooters Hill and the Shrewsbury Burial Mound, Iain and I visit the site and walk Steve Moore's 'psychic circuit'.

Exploring Shoreditch & Hoxton in Londons East End (4K)

John Rogers 2023-06-14 | An East End walking tour. Come for a stroll around one of the most interesting and lively districts of London as we explore the history of Shoreditch and Hoxton in London's East End. Located just to the east of the City walls, this area is bisected by the Roman roads of Ermine Street and Old Street. In the Elizabethan period it became a place of entertainment where James Burbage built his first theatre and staged plays by William Shakespeare before they moved to Southwark. The Curtain Theatre opened nearby close to the site of the Holywell Priory and the Shoreditch Holy Well.
Our walk takes us from Curtain Road over Shoreditch High Street into Old Nichol which because one of London's most notorious rookeries in the 19th Century. This led to the London County Council demolishing the poor housing and building one of the first council housing projects at the Boundary Estate with the beautiful Arnold Circus at its heart. We go looking for the Leon Kossoff Cherry tree planted to commemorate the great artist who grew up in the area.
We pass through St Leonards churchyard before walking into Hoxton Square. This was a late-17th Century development inspired by Bloomsbury Square built on the fields where poet and playwright Ben Jonson killed the actor Gabriel Spencer in a duel. The final stop on this East End walking tour is the site of the Hoxton medicinal spring in Charles Square.

City of Stories - A Walking Tour of Norwich (4K)

John Rogers 2023-06-04 | Join me on a walking tour of the medieval city of Norwich guided by a group of students from UEA. The walk starts on St Andrew's Hill and continues past Norwich Halls and the University of the Arts Norwich to the River Wensum. We continue walking the historic streets past the many medieval churches - Norwich is said to have more medieval churches than any city in Europe. We explore the majestic Norwich Cathedral, built in 1096 which has the second highest spire in England and then walk around the 11th Century Norwich Castle. The students also show us the heart of Norwich nightlife on Prince of Wales Road and the Queen of the Iceni pub by the riverside. Our walking tour passes the historic market which has been on this site for over 900 years and also the medieval Guildhall built in the early 1400s. We stroll through the beautiful Royal Arcade, built in 1899 and finish our perambulation of this beautiful city in St Benedict's street.

Our walk actually starts in Saunderton and we stroll across the Chiltern hills to West Wycombe where the River Wye rises before flowing through the grounds of West Wycombe House. Our route takes us through the village and along the A40 before picking up the stream in West Wycombe Park and following it through the industrial fringe of Wycombe around Desborough Avenue and Desborough Road.
After a break in the Eden Centre we take a look at Wycombe High Street and follow the river as it flows underground through a culvert before it re-emerges near Buckinghamshire New University. Our walk takes us across the Rye and then out through Wycombe Marsh, Loudwater and Wooburn Green to Wooburn Park.
The final leg of this epic River Wye Chilterns walk goes through the village of Bourne to where the Wye makes its confluence with the Thames at Hedsor.

We start at Bishopsgate and revisit St Andrew Undershaft before moving on to St Margaret Pattens with its magnificent spire by Sir Christopher Wren. From here we walk to St Margaret at Hill, said to have one of the most beautiful interiors of all the City Churches. Our next stop is the serene St Dunstans in the East church garden built within the footprint of the medieval church that was destroyed during the Blitz in 1941. Stumbling across a Lost River in the Lea Valley London (4K)

John Rogers 2023-05-07 | A sunny Bank Holiday walk from Blackhorse Lane Walthamstow beside the Banbury Reservoir then onto the Lea Navigation at the North Circular. We then follow the Lea through Enfield until we pick up the Mossops Creek near Brimsdown and cross Mossops Creek footbridge. The Mossops Creek was dug by gravel extraction company Mosses and Co in the 1890s, presumably to link their works with the Lea Navigation.

Walking one of the Great London Rivers: the River Brent (4K)

The we follow the River Brent south along the North Circular Road to Neasden and the Brent Reservoir. East London Walk in Search of a Mystery (4K)

John Rogers 2023-04-17 | This walk follows a scent of clue in a correspondence about some mysterious underground rivers running through Leyton that link to local folklore. So we head to Leyton High Road then down towards the Leyton Orient Ground at Brisbane Road where one of the rivers may be buried. We then explore the other watercourses which link to the Roman occupation of Leyton. Our East London walking tour then goes along Church Road Leyton to Etloe House where another hidden river may run before crossing Leyton High Road and going along Markhouse Road to St James's Street Walthamstow. Turning into Coppermill Lane we pick up the course of the Dagenham Brook to Blackhorse Road Station and the new development of apartments around Vanguard Way. Finally we walk along Blackhorse Lane looking for signs of the Higham Hill Brook at Blackhorse Yard.

A relaxing Stroll around Covent Garden & St Giles / London Walking Tour (4K)

John Rogers 2023-04-08 | This London walking tour takes us around one of London's most famous districts - Covent Garden. But first we check on the developments in Denmark Street, the historic home of London's music industry. From here we walk down St Giles High Street, setting for Hogarth's famous Gin Lane, and turn into Monmouth Street. At Seven Dials I noticed a drop in the land and a later comment alerted me to the presence of the Cock and Pye Ditch that drained the area around Seven Dials when it was known simply as Marshland. So we then embark on a walk around the Cock and Pye Ditch and Bloomsbury Ditch which opens up more of the area's rich history. This walk takes us from Embankment Gardens, up Strand Lane and across the newly pedestrianised section of the Strand. We then head Drury Lane, Shelton Street, Neal Street, Shaftesbury Avenue and West Street. Our walking tour resumes in Shorts Gardens and Neal's Yard before crossing Long Acre into Covent Garden Piazza and Henrietta Street where our walk ends.

The Other Side of Soho - Carnaby Street, Broadwick Street, Golden Sq (4K)

John Rogers 2023-03-26 | This London walking tour of Soho picks up the trail that I started in my previous Soho video in Berwick Street. We walk down Broadwick Street where Dr John Snow made his breakthrough discovery linking infected water to cholera infections. We also visit the site of the birthplace of William Blake before continuing our stroll along Carnaby Street. In Kingly Street we admire the pubs and then turn into Beak Street where the Italian painter Canaletto lived for a period of time. Our walking tour takes us then into Golden Square, first laid out in the 1670's with 'such houses as might accommodate Gentry', and we admire the fine architecture. We stop by the Piccadilly Theatre and then follow Brewer Street into Great Windmill Street with its famous Theatre.

Walking the visionary London of Emanuel Swedenborg (4K)

John Rogers 2023-03-20 | A walk with writer Iain Sinclair and Stephen McNeilly of the Swedenborg Society following the footsteps of 18th Century Swedish scientist, philosopher and mystic Emanuel Swedenborg. Our walk starts in Warner Street Clerkenwell where Swedenborg had his most famous vision in a Chop House. We then walk on along the course of the River Fleet to Bakers Yard / Cold Bath Square where Swedenborg died in 1772. From here we walk along Saffron Hill and Hatton Garden to Fetter Lane, the site of the Moravian Chapel that Swedenborg attended. Our Swedenborg walk takes us along Fleet Street and up Ludgate Hill to Paternoster Square linking together a series of locations associated with Swedenborg's publishing and writing career.
We then head out to East London, passing along Leman Street, Cable Street, past Wiltons Music Hall to Swedenborg Gardens where Swedenborg was buried in the Swedish Church.

Exploring the Fascinating Mysteries & Stories of Crouch End, North London (4K)

This walk has some of London's best views. The Capital Ring is a 78-mile circular route that encircles showcasing its natural beauty, rich history, and culture.
Starting from Crystal Palace, we'll make our way through some of London's most picturesque neighbourhoods, taking in stunning views of the city skyline and beautiful open spaces.
The walk from Crystal Palace to Streatham Common is an easy-to-moderate 4.5-mile hike that is perfect for anyone looking for a break from the city's hustle and bustle.
