On July 1st, Newfoundlanders Remember Royal Newfoundland Regiment 2021-07-01 | July 1st is Canada Day, however in Newfoundland and Labrador, we know it as Memorial Day. On July 1st, 1916 (One-hundred and Five years ago.) the Battle of the Somme commenced. An entire generation of Newfoundlanders and Labradoreans, approximately eight-hundred men, went over the top of their trenches in support of the grander operation. The Battle of Beaumont-Hamel, scarcely remembered by those in the wider world, is regarded as one of the darkest events in the history of our Province, and before that: Our nation. Within the span of less than 30 minutes, 710 fathers, sons, brothers, and cousins of Newfoundland and Labrador were cut down before the lines of the German Army. With a staggering 386 wounded, and 324 killed in action. Many having fallen to the guns of the enemy before reaching their own front line. Only 68 of the 800 soldiers were still in any condition to report for roll call the following morning.The heroic actions of the soldiers of Newfoundland and Labrador have ensured both an eternal respect, and admiration from the citizens of our Province. Their noble sacrifice will forever be enshrined in our memories, for as long as Newfoundland and Labrador endures.
