Not a patch of grass - with musicAsk ACap2013-12-20 | I scored another YouTuber's innocuous, yet mildly alarming video. It didn't have music at first. But it needed it.

Whoops, my head was cut off for the whole video! Just fyi, there are apparently 2 things still broken for now with AU3, for those of you who are using it. If these get fixed, let me know!
1. You can’t use any instruments in VEPro that require sync with the transport. 2. If you try to save the AU3 setup in LogicPro as a patch, it doesn’t work right.

Yep, you can use IAC Driver instead. Everywhere you chose ipMIDI, just choose IAC Driver Bus 1 instead. In my previous video on this topic, I was under the impression that IAC Driver doesn't send MMC, but it seems to work exactly the same way as with ipMIDI.

In theory, you should be able to get Logic to receive Pro Tools's MMC. To do this, in Pro Tools Peripherals Setup, under Machine Control, you'd uncheck MIDI Machine Control Remote (Slave) and check MIDI Machine Control (Master), using ipMIDI Port 1 with an ID of 127. Then, in Logic MIDI Sync Project Settings, under MIDI Machine Control (MMC), you'd uncheck Transmit MMC and check Listen to MMC Input. However, I couldn't get Logic's playhead to respond to moving Pro Tools's playhead the same way as I was able to get the playhead in Pro Tools to respond to moving Logic's playhead when Logic was sending MMC and Pro Tools listening. If you figure out how to get Logic to respond to Pro Tools's MMC, please let me know in the comments!
You may notice it's not perfectly in sync while playing, but it takes time to send the timecode information from one program to the other. They usually stay within a frame of each other, though, which is pretty good.
This method is not recommended for a 2-computer sync or sending/printing audio on 1 or 2 computers. It's mainly for video sync. There's a known timing issue with ipMIDI that makes printing audio from one computer to another unreliable. Thanks, Nathan for pointing this out!

Working on a client machine that communicates with a server frees up the server's processing power to just streaming samples. For this reason, in VEPro's Preferences, under Instances, you can turn Multiprocessing up pretty much as high as you want (you may want to keep maybe 1 core available for the OS). When you use VEPro locally (on the same machine), you need to keep other threads available for your DAW and other operating system tasks you may have going on.
If you don't have access to the router for some reason, you can actually create a 2-computer LAN with one ethernet cable going between the computers. Most modern computers will be able to figure it out with a regular ethernet cable, but if your computer is old enough, you might need to use a crossover cable (or regular cable with crossover adapter) instead.

I’ve heard that Logic prefers one port per instance, but I haven’t really had problems with this multi-port setup, plus I prefer my current instance organization. Experiment and see which works better for your workflow.
When I say "on 2 machines," what I mean is that you're running your DAW on the client and you're running VEPro on a server (which is dedicated for this task). That buffer setting in the plugin will add to the buffer you have already set in Logic's settings.

You could have Logic extract audio from the video for you, but that might not always be the case. I demonstrate, in Logic Pro X, a couple situations you might run into when you need to sync a separate audio file (or just one that has already been extracted from that video previously) to your video, including a glitch involving negative bars. I hope this video is not needed in the future and that Logic fixes this bug, but until then, you need to know how to deal with it.

Swap the default click sound in Logic Pro X for the click sound of your choice.
N.B.: In Logic 10.4.5 and after, you need to start with the existing Klopfgeist click track and change its plugin from either the Mixer (view all tracks) or the Environment. You will not be able to create a new track to use for the click. Instrument 256 is now grayed out, "Reserved," and not necessarily the specific channel needed for the click.

Stream Logic's space-hungry samples from a drive other than your system drive.
N.B.: As of Logic 10.4.2 and later, there's now a built-in way to move the Sound Library to another drive: support.apple.com/en-us/HT208892 You can still use this method to move Apple Loops, User Loops or any additional 3rd party content that does not move with the Sound Library.
Every time you move your sample folders, you need to create new symbolic links, since they reference static locations.
But what about aliases, you ask? Learn more about the difference between symbolic links and aliases in the Installation Instructions found in the Symbolic Linker .dmg.
The advice about having three separate drives is most applicable on a pro rig. If you work in film and want to go really nuts, dedicate a fourth drive just for video, or use networked computers.
The size of your Loops folders may vary depending on what other Apple software you have installed and any other loops you may have created or downloaded.
