Throughout the piece, the tempo gradually becomes slower from the first part to the third part; and while the main motif remains unchanged, the use of varying chord progressions conveys a different feeling every time it repeats. The first part utilizes a lot of seventh chords to create a nostalgic atmosphere and a sense of longing for the past, while the second part uses unexpected bass line progressions to convey a dynamic sense of change (growth). Lastly, the third part is more mellow, and it returns to the melody of the first part except with a twist - there are many chords that build tension, particularly the one at 3:25, but there is no satisfactory resolution. In fact, the piece ends exactly at a point where a resolution chord could be used to give closure. Nothing creates a sense of unease more effectively than seeing small, accumulative changes in a familiar pattern.
