Lightening talks from scientists & Googlers hosted at Google's booth @ the 2022 American Geophysical Union (AGU) conference
Abstract by speaker: We developed a Google Earth Engine system to map the terrestrial human footprint on a global scale at 300 m resolution as often as the underlying data change, incorporating near-real-time feeds of population, land cover, infrastructure, accessibility, and night-time lights data. Critical to our efforts, we developed a pipeline to ingest and share data from Open Street Map archives across a wide range of infrastructure types. Our results demonstrate how past efforts to map the human footprint have underestimated its depth and breadth and suggest that Earth'shuman footprint is both greater and growing faster now than at any previous time in humanhistory. We will show trend analysis 2001 - 2020 and discuss how these data will be maintained into the future. Finally we will briefly show how the human footprint pipeline is contributing to efforts to map habitat for wide-ranging species such as the tiger.Shanghai, China - Earth TimelapseGoogle Earth2023-04-07 | Timelapse is a global, zoomable video that shows how our planet has changed since 1984.
