The switch has Ubuntu 18 installed, and is running a work in progress build of the Citra 3DS emulator with the vulkan renderer, which helps improving performance on NVIDIA GPUs. The game runs most of the time at full speed 60 frames per second, with slight frame drops here and there.
There are a few important things to note: - There are a few frame drops in the video (you can see the FPS counter in the bottom). However, you have to keep in mind that I chose a GPU intensive track for demonstration purposes, and most of the tracks run at full speed, as you can see in the second part of the video. On the other hand, there are other more demanding custom tracks that don't reach 60 fps. - Vanilla Mario Kart 7 runs at about 40-50 fps. The game runs better with the mod installed because of the render optimizations it implements. - I'm using a SDXC U3 128 GB micro SD card, which helps A LOT with performance. Using slower cards will probably yield worse results. - For consistent 60fps, the switch needs to be overclocked. This causes the console to heat up and the fan to be very loud. Also, this isn't very great for the battery in handheld mode. Normal docked mode clock speeds seem to be playable enough, with 60fps most of the time. - The vulkan renderer is still being worked on, and is only available in Citra canary. There will probably be bugfixes and improvements in the future as it is made available to a wider range of users. - The render scale has been set to 3x (720p), which matches the switch screen resolution. - There is no official build of Citra for the Switch, as the developers don't provide arm64 builds. I had to build it from source: citra-emu.org/wiki/building-for-linux - Sorry for the bad video quality, but this is the best recording setup I have right now for the switch. Also, sorry for the bad audio quality, I had to use a noise removal tool because the switch fan was too loud. - Yes, you can randomly hear some birds in the background. Like other Nintendo console emulators, you will need a real console to dump your unique account data to go online. However, you have to keep in mind that there is still a very small ban risk associated with doing this, although it looks like Nintendo is no longer doing 3DS bans nowadays. In any case, you can always use the online functionality on Pretendo Network instead, which is an open source replacement for Nintendo's servers.
(NOTE: In the video, I have used the CTGP-7 modpack as I wanted to show that it can go online as well, but the vanilla unmodified Mario Kart 7 game can also play online without any issues. In fact, all the players I played with are not running the mod. Further testing is needed to verify other games can go online as well.)

I remember going through the game's files and seeing the track used by the game for the credits sequence, and today I wondered how it actually looked like from other camera angles, so I used the free camera feature in DesMuMe to take a look. :P
In the left side you can see the top screen with the free camera I'm controlling, while on the right side you can see the original sequence, for reference. Sorry for all the shakiness of the free camera, but it's a bit difficult to control, and the fact that the X direction is inverted due to mirror mode make it even more difficult lol.
As you can see in the video, the credits sequence is just a giant loop. Sadly, the karts disappear as soon as the leave the intended screen boundaries. I have no idea if it's the game moving the players around, or there is a check that makes them invisible when leaving the screen. If that's the case, it would be interesting to disable that check and see how the karts actually move. It's also interesting how the karts move in depth, which is difficult to see in real hardware without the increased screen resolution.

Thanks to the new discoveries in rendering custom UI elements, it's now possible to make more complex speedometers such as the ones shown in the video. Also, since they are no longer drawn with the CPU but with the GPU, they cause no lag in the game. Therefor, the new speedometers will be able to be used online!
You will be able to choose between the available speedometers from the ingame select menu, as well as choose whether to use km/h or mph.

Mushroom Mountain is a custom track made by Ferv for Mario Kart Wii and ported to Mario Kart 7 by me. The track is also a remake of Mushroom Peaks, another Mario Kart Wii custom track made by MrBean35000vr and Chadderz.

Currently, this mode just gives an item to everybody based on their position, as if it was grabbed from an item box. However, this can be changed to have a custom item distribution based on position. The cooldown for some items was also removed, in order to cause even more chaos.

This custom track uses the honeybee hive air current to go from the bottom of the slide to the top. The issue is that the game only allows for a single air current object to be used at the same time, so the game had to be patched so multiple of them can be loaded. This fact makes the custom track only be playable in CTGP-7.
There are still some minor tweaks to do, like improving the end of the glider section as the turn is too tight. Some online beta testing will also be needed to check if the air current objects work fine. As soon as everything is done, this custom track will replace the current version in CTGP-7.

Some other techniques such as shading using the mipmaps were used to improve the road visuals too.

It detects players using item hacks and flags them so you are unafected by their actions (items are disabled and they become intangible). Of course, as any other kind of cheat prevention there are ways to circunvent it, but the methods are only known by very few people. From the CTGP-7 dev team, we ask those people for responsability and keep the methods private.
In the future, a way to ignore their progress through the course and/or their final results will be added.
After 3 years, Volcano Beach Ruins has been finished! Ermelber made the entire model and the first revision of the course files, while I improved the visuals and updated the kmp and kcl. There are a few bugs with this track still so they need to be fixed. We also have to think about the underwater right path (the one with the pipe with the boost pads) as it's way longer than the right path. I didn't add any custom music yet as we couldn't decided which one would be the appropiate, so leave any suggestions in the comments! (Beach bowl galaxy from Super Mario Galaxy may be the final choice.)

Will there ever be extra character slots without having to switch them this way? - Not anytime soon as we still don't know the format of many files that need to be patched. The new cup scrolling system made by me and fishguy allows to expand the number of cups so more tracks can be in the game at the same time. They aren't included directly in the course music file, so when adding custom music they would sound off-beat and disturb the player a lot. After some time, we discovered a way to completely disable them by "corrupting" the associated file in the bcsar, this worked out fine until now, as with more track slots, frontrunning beats would not play in original tracks. To solve this problem, I decided to look in the code and see what was controlling them, luckily for us, the way they are controlled is very simple and can be customised with ease bringing the first ever custom frontrunning beats in Mario Kart 7. :D
For those interested, the beats are synced by specifying the BPM value and the start sample of the course music. With the extended course slots mod, I was able to create a table for each custom track that holds this information so it can be modified at any moment. As a side effect, this also helps disabling the beats for tracks where they don't fit at all by setting the BPM value to 0.
About the new version of N64 Frappe Snowland, several graphical improvements were made, such as the water section, as well as implementing culling and proper replay cameras.

Since we didn't have any custom track distribution set up, we only play normal tracks in the video. However, the important part is that during our gameplay, nobody else joined us as it was a private room.
This system will be eventually implemented in CTGP-7 as well as the scrolling cups.
