Creating a stylized Golf Course with MicroVerse in Unity
updated
This video is a quick showcase of how quickly you can set up a terrain with the Content Browser. While I was at it I thought why not just add a desert dunes field inbetween. Just because I could 😁

The content browser got a shader for the heightmaps, ie they aren't red anymore. The texture stamps got a new preset for Grassy Rocks. My upcoming asset Genesis got a RAM integration for syncing the MV splines to the RAM river spline.
All in all it's really shaping up nicely. I guess the amount of time it took to create this scene speaks for itself. I'm pleased 😊

And more importantly: My stamps are in the Asset Refresh sale for -40%. In case you want to support me, see link below.
This is really exciting stuff, I had to make another video of the Tank asset I did a few weeks ago, now with MicroVerse support. Last time I used the Unity Terrain Tools, which are destructive. Now with MicroVerse which is non-destructive and layer based. This is such an incredible difference to work with.
Modification of terrain has never been so easy and fluent. The only think that takes long in the video is me thinking which stamp I want to use next 😁
In case you're interested: I set up the textures also with MicroVerse, that's how the splatmap gets modified automatically. I can share the presets if the request arises. It's not that sophisticated, just some slope / height / etc settings per terrain layer, very easy to do in MicroVerse.
All in all I'm super pleased with the progress. When you think that Jason started this 1,5 months ago, I can't wait to see what you guys come up with when you use MicroVerse especially with the ideas and feature requests you'll have 😊

Jason's video:

As more and more featuers were integrated into MicroVerse also Genesis evolved. As you can see from my channel I really do love to prototype with all kinds of assets, get quick results. So I took the chance and incorporated several tools I've always been using on a regular basis.
This video shows a preview of what Genesis for MicroVerse will be. MicroVerse is super flexible on its own and I have a very strong feeling that a lot of publishers will adapt to it and provide configurations for all kinds of features. In that way Genesis will adapt and keep its dynamic nature.
I do think this is a good mix of tooling in combination with keeping the MicroVerse inspector slim, eg there's no need to have a "Subdivision" setting in every single Spline Path.
There's more to come, I wanted to keep this first video brief and show what it's about. From Jason's video you can see that there's eg Vegetation. And MicroSplat integration and this definitely begs for MicroSplat Trax! 😁
Note: The ATV driver losing the hand grip occasionally is because I used a beta version of Unity. This doesn't happen in LTS versions.

I wasn't done there, so I thought I'd also check out the latest Unity alpha combined with their Water asset. So I replaced the pool that came with the Modern Neighborhood House asset and made the Raccoon swim. It's just a few settings after all to achieve that.
Well, I'm super impressed. That scene is constructed out of 4 assets. Plus my very own Photo Session to take close-up pictures. And it was done within 30 minutes. It's really awesome what you can achieve in such a short amount of time using AAA assets 😊

I was using SceneNav extensively recently and naturally it suggested itself to create bookmarks. I call them scenemarks, since it's all about the Scene in Unity. I made it look like QuickNav and so I kept the history & favorites.
I think I can have a release version within a few weeks, have to test some more first. Maybe change a few things here and there, implement ideas that come up while toying around. SceneMark integrates very well with SceneNav and will be provided as a free update.

I thought I'd share the experience. The asset is quite good. A HDRP version will come as well according to the Asset Store description, can't wait for that. I have to try that then with the Fluffy Grooming Tool as well, I'm all for eye candy.
Speaking of which, the thing I really enjoyed while moving through this environment was the glass. It's remarkable. The scenery is awesome. What could be improved for realism is adding a bit of grass. But it's URP after all and in that regard rather aimed at performance. Other than that this is an excellent new asset.

The look is on purpose this way. Shaky and what not to just camouflage the game that's behind it.
The only tricky part of this video was to figure out how to simulate a handheld camera, hardly anyone tells you that. In fact it was very easy once you know. All you need is an iphone and set up virtual camera.
Winbush created an excellent tutorial about that:

Here's how you can create Islands using my Stamp Collection. I prepared a scene for that and flattened and stamped the terrain over and over. You can see how quickly this can be done.
The vegetation and splatmap were created using Vegetation Studio Pro. I used my Vegetation Studio Pro Extensions for quick access. Was also required for setting all vegetation to Instanced rather than change each and every single one of them manually. Looks like Instanced Indirect isn't supported for all of the vegetation. The vegetation is Tropical Forest Pack, the biomes of that asset are used in Vegetation Studio Pro. The Ocean is Crest Ocean. The boat controller is Dynamic Water Physics. The boat itself is Fast Rescue Craft Mako 655.
The video turned out to become longer than expected. I could have cut it off after the first sequence, but it was fun to explore the scene with various stamps. So I thought I'd keep it the way it is for the interested ones.

For texturing I used Microsplat Procedural Texturing. And Microsplat Trax was mandatory for the tracks of the Tank. The explosion of the asset got replaced with the VFX I used for the Drake demo scene.
My free stamp examples asset has grown to quite an amount. As you can see, you can be very quick with creating a new terrain with them. No need to buy my collections with such an amount of free stuff, but of course I'd be happy if you do 😁

User Yolan posted this in The Messy Coder discord:
@Rowlan you should really make the preview inspector its own window so you can easily switch between characters. Then you can use OnSelectionChanged so you don't have to deal with dragging/dropping
Well, if it saves mouse-clicks I'm all in. So I drafted up a quick prototype which is shown in this video. It's open for discussion. At first I thought I'd leave the old functionality in as it is aditionally, however after toying around with this some more, I think I'll drop it and stick with the editor window alone. It's much more flexible.
Gonna finalize this version, make the auto-selection optional, test some more and upload it to the Asset Store later this week. Thanks a lot for you feedback! 😊

The NatureManufacture assets are very well optimized, so it was possible to add even more Knights to the scene.
All in all both assets look good, but with the NatureManufacture asset you get more versatility. Please note that the demo scene contains a RAM demo, not RAM itself. But then again, both assets Forest Enviornment and RAM combined are still way cheaper than the Beech Forest asset. You just get more out of it for a lower price. And performance is way better with the NatureManufacture assets.
I guess the asset choice pretty much depends on which look you want to achieve.

I think it turned out quite nice. Of course I needed a Horse to ride on, so the preferred Horse Animset Pro it was. Took only a few minutes to set up the scene. Character animations are also from HAP.
And while I was at it I also toyed around with the upcoming editor mode frame selection of my own asset Animation Preview. The Saracen's crouch position as an example. And in addition to that I added a few more details to the forest with my own asset YAPP.
I thought I'd also show some performance statistics using Graphy. That Beech forest is rather performance hungry, but it does look nice. However the publisher replies this to reviews of that asset:
"Sorry, our main target audience is AAA game developers. (So only HDRP) These packages were just a test run for Unity. We will not be developing any more packages for Unity. We have found that our packages are not suitable for the Unity community. We recommend checking out UnrealEngine5 packages."
So I take it that performance improvements will never come.

The scene can be constructed quite fast. Basically it's just using the ocean from Crest, adding a terrain, applying a stamp and textures. Then paint the vegetation prefabs using my own YAPP. There's much more available in the Jungle asset, I just scratched the surface.
I added a bit more detail with Microsplat Wetness, that's always mandatory when it comes to terrain, the beach just wouldn't add up visually when there's an ocean over it without wetness. And while I was at it I also applied stochastic texture cluster mode to achieve texture tiling removal. Microsplat isn't part of the Mega Bundle, but you should have it anyway already. It's that good 😉
The Mega Bundle bundle would contain Crest URP, but my preference is HDRP, so I used the HDRP version.
I had almost all assets of the bundle before I bought it. However, if you are undecided, the asset (STP) Survival Template PRO alone is worth having the bundle.

With Animation Preview you can preview the animations of assets in the Unity Editor without having to hit play. This has the additional benefit that you can quickly see how the assets look like in motion in different environments. Please check out the asset description for more details.
This video is just me browsing through some of the Infinity PBR assets, checking out various conditions in the most awesome Lordenfel environment. I left the music that I had playing in the background in. It's from Sky Mubs and I think it's epic and awesome.
In the video please ignore the errors in the console. The animations send sound events and since those are only interpreted with a proper listener and in play mode, those are consistency checks. They've got nothing to do with how it is in play mode. It's the nature of things in Unity, however I wanted to keep it as it is.
There's a lot more in those Infinity PBR assets that I didn't show. In that brief amount of time - if you've even watched 20 minutes so far - I just wanted to go through some of them and see how they look like in Lordenfel. I think they fit quite good in there and in any Fantasy environment.
A big THANK YOU VERY MUCH shoutout to Infinity PBR 😊
ps: unexpectedly I did like the Mushroom the most, it's very versatile and quite different from everything else I've used so far. This is what one learns from trying out and toying around, one of the reasons why I implemented Animation Preview. The Mushroom is really unexpected, yet leaves an awesome impression 😊
ps 2: the pink Devil is just my fault, I missed something in the conversion to HDRP. Similar regarding the flying Devil, was my fault, apologies for that.

Or in other words: YAPP (Yet Another Prefab Painter) is not just for vegetation.
Of course you'd fine tune everything with assets like MicroSplat Trax for horse tracks, add dust and wind. Or add Enviro for day/night cycle and such. This is just supposed to show how quickly you can create the base of an environment.
Enjoy 😊

YAPP (Yet Another Prefab Painter) is not just for terrains, but while it's on sale I thought I'd show how one could quickly paint vegetation with it. After all I initially started developing it for that purpose. It's become so much more. For the showcase I simply took NatureManufacture's Forest Environment and repainted the vegetation on their demo terrain. I just love the NatureManufacture assets, they are among the best on the Unity Asset Store.
In the video I just disabled the terrain details and removed the objects in order to simply paint them again. This is just a quick showcase, of course you'd push the vegetation back into the terrain or into the persistent storage of Vegetation Studio Pro for performance reasons. YAPP has options for that.
What I didn't show are the various options for painting, let alone spline distribution. I wanted to keep the video short. For quick painting on larger scale you'd probably want to use poisson disc distribution. As well as terrain texture filtering. For details and fine tuning you may want to use the fluent mode. It all depends on your artistic preference. Maybe check out the many videos in the asset store description.
And of course there's life in a forest, so I quickly added the Malbers Raven to fly around with it. It just had to be, the Malbers assets are also among the best on the Unity Asset Store.

I got the asset Procedural Terrain Painter from Staggart Creations recommended. And actually the description was already quite nice, especially the MicroSplat integration.
So I checked it out. And I have to admit, it does exactly what I intend to do. Lacks a few filters for my personal preference (concavity, erosion and such), but all in all this asset is quite good.
After toying around with it I thought why not create a quick video, especially with only free assets, about how to create an island in the middle of an ocean and texturing it.
The video is only 4 minutes, I guess you get what's being done. In short: Use the crest island scene which has already presets for the depth cache for shore lines. Textures are from the Unity terrain samples. Terrain stamp is from my free StampIt! Collection Examples. And the texturing is done using Procedural Terrain Painter.
What I didn't try yet is the MicroSplat integration which the asset supports. I just wanted to keep this video with free assets only. But adding Stochastic Texture Cluster mode definitely adds considerable value to the scene by eliminating terrain texture tiling.
Also, I think you can see why I don't add splat maps to my stamps. Everyone would change them anyway when you realize how easy it is to texturize your terrain at your personal and artistic preference with custom and free textures.

You can get the terrain stamp for free as well. Upon request I bundled it with the free StampIT! Examples. Please leave a review in case you use it. And do share what you create, I'd really enjoy seeing others use my work.
I didn't want to overwhelm you with information, so this video is just the basic setup. If there's demand for it, I can add the rest as well like water interaction, diving, the big Drake running after the Drake, etc. The video is very short, yet you see what you can achieve in that very short amount of time.
Here's a list of the things I did to achieve the look of that scene:
00:00 Pick what Malbers uses for the camera and create a prefab
00:22 Base the scene on a Crest example scene
00:42 Create the terrain using a stamp from my StampIT! collection
01:20 Add textures using the awesome Castle Valley Collection
02:00 Add Crest shorelines
02:54 Add MicroSplat: remove texture tiling
04:36 Set MicroSplat wetness height to indicate shoreline wetness
05:00 Add spires from Castle Valley
05:34 Add the Drake
06:04 First play test
06:36 fFx HDRP shader for the dash effect
08:32 Add clouds
09:40 Remove LODs, MicroSplat Trax is based on the last LOD
11:50 Fine-tune Trax to make the tracks more noticable

The scene was created using the built-in render pipeline. MicroSplat was used for the terrain texturing. The ground is sand texture from R.A.M, the Canyon texture is from MicroSplat's Global Texturing module. Trax is used to show sand tracks. And Wind and Glitter was used for the flowing sand on the ground.
In case you need gradients for the Canyons in combination with MicroSplat's Global Texturing, you can easily create those from pictures on the web with my free tool Gradient Picker.

Maybe I should make the dragons come out of a portal from the Valley of the Ancients and move into the City. And also let the super hero fly through the portal into the Valley of the Ancients. Could be fun 😁 and definitely a good learning experience.

Initially I stamp heightmaps of my Rugged Rocks asset to shape the terrain. Then terrain textures with rocks and snow are applied. Those were created from substances using the Substance plugin. You should really try it, it's quite good.
The snow texture is applied using a slope mask. The mask feature comes with the Unity Terrain Tools you can install via Package Manager.
The character is Drake the Dragonkin, one of my current favorites. It's versatile, has biped and quadruped movement, has plenty of animations, looks exciting and you can quickly explore large terrains using the super dash function when you fly.
Then I added MicroSplat features:
Dynamic Snow as well as Wind and Glitter was added to get terrain dynamics into the scene. I could have added Stochastic Texture Cluster mode in order to get rid of the repetitive terrain tiling, but with the snow I didn't feel the necessity for it currently. With less snow it would definitely be an excellent option.
The Drake should leave foot prints in the snow, so I added Trax. One thing to keep in mind is that Trax works only on the last LOD in case of a LOD group. So I removed all LODs.
In my video I still use FreeLookCameraRig from the Animal Controller. Please note that Malbers moved on to Cinemachine which is way superior, you get e. g. tunnel-effect while dashing during flight. The Drake demo scene is set up this way. I should use that in the next video.
And finally I added my own tool Photo Session in order to make screenshots.
If you have questions, feel free to ask.

I needed an environment. I played the UE5 Matrix demo on Playstation some time ago, so I thought why not combine those assets. Let's see how that turns out. I have to say: My mind is blown. Performance is excellent, graphics is top, see for yourself.
It was my first try today with the UE5. It's similar to Unity, yet quite different. Both have their own feature set. I have to say I enjoy them both and I'll definitely dig deeper into the UE since a vast landscape, in this video a vast town with such high fidelity graphics is just plain joy 😁

To give a quick summary of the scene: The animations and controls come out of the box with Drake and Animal Controller. The sand and pillars are from Castle Valley. The terrain itself was created with World Creator and stamped on the Unity terrain. By the way, I released a few terrain stamping assets this week in case you'd like to use them. The ocean is Creat Ocean. It has an awesome new addtion called Interaction Sphere with which you can easily interact with the water. The foot and tail interaction with the terrain is Microsplat Trax. I also used Microsplat's stochastic texture cluster mode for eliminating the terrain texture tiling. And Microsplat wetness to make the terrain under the shorelines appear wet. The shorelines is another awesome feature of Crest by the way. The huge skeletons are from Skulls & Bones by Jonas Ronnegard. The epic music was created by Sky Mubs. The explosion VFX was created by Thomas Iché.
The other characters are Irval the Wyvern, the big one is the Drake asset again. This time with a different skin that comes with the asset. I removed the wings and adjusted the blend shapes and scale a bit. A bit much 😁
All in all this was a most awesome and exciting time to be in a beta. So many possibilities. You can check out the Drake's Asset Store site to see more of him, e. g. integrated in The Book of the Dead or additional animations like strafing and a lot more.

Excellent review, check it out. When I saw it I thought an abandoned factory would be an ideal location to place random stuff with YAPP, my free prefab painter for Unity. I had to try, the video is the result of this.
Please keep in mind that I removed gameobjects from the demo scene in order to just place them again. The asset itself is awesome the way it is already.
I was thinking about what could I put in there in addition? First I thought of some Zombie game, but since I toyed around with the exciting Malbers Drake recently I just used the Drake's mechanism and swapped it with a Mech. I wanted to see how it looks and feels.
This short video definitely begs for a follow-up which will come. I have to say I'm super impressed with the Abandoned Factory asset. It does look good. Really good.

The black & white view in play mode is just something I'm experimenting with. I like the look, it has a certain vibe 😊

After watching the video I had to purchase it. I have to admit it's very awesome. It deserves a lot more attention, especially for the introductory sales price of -50%. Naturally I had to add dragons to this exciting fantasy environment. By the way, what you see isn't all of the asset, there's a lot more available with it.
I thought I'd make a quick showcase video to see how the atmosphere works. It looks great in my opinion. So you can expect more videos in this environment in the future. It's the first time I really wanted to add mutliple dragons, Orcs, Trolls and what not. The characters are rather static in this showcase because I only had the morning to set it all up. Too little spare time, I need more 😁
Irval with the Undead Knight was a perfect fit. However when I was flying above the terrain the texture tiling became very noticable. That's not a problem anymore since there's the Stochastic Texture Cluster mode of MicroSplat. And while I was at it, adding Trax for the Dragon tracks in the sand and a little bit of height with POM (Parallax Occlusion Mapping) were just clicks and easy to add.
However the scene deserved just more, so I added L.V.E. in addition just to see how the combined atmosphere looks. And I really like Crest, so I added the Standard version in order to get shore lines along the terrain.
All in all Big Environment Pack Reforged is an asset that's very exciting with lots of possibilities. I adjusted the post processing settings and the workflow a bit to make it not look that flat. Most notably I changed the color grading mode from Neutral to ACES. Neutral would be fine as well, but for this scene I thought I'd experiment a bit.

Survival Template Pro is one of the best assets I've come across recently. Price is way too cheap for 40$. It has so many features, just check the videos in the Asset Store description. What you see there is what you get.
So I guess this is only the first one with that asset, more will definitely follow. It's so much fun to toy around with it 😁

This video shows how to use that extension. You can see, the setup of new characters is pretty much straightforward and fast.
One thing I didn't figure out yet is why one character's y position is higher than anothers. I guess it got something to do with the pivot point. I'm gonna inform the publisher about that, it should be fixable.

What didn't work though was the wind. Luckily I purchased KWS Water System some time ago. And it turned out that Kripto actually converted the whole Book of the Dead and in addition to that added a shader for wind, which is awesome. So I used that one. I wanted to do it from scratch - apart from the wind shader, but Kripto has the whole BotD as demo in his asset, so you may as well use that one if you purchased his asset.
All in all I really hope Unity will re-add this awesome asset for everyone to their store.

I have to say, Fluffy is not only for making furry assets in a game. It's just so much fun to play with it and groom around. It's very easy to use, very versatile and with really nice results. And I didn't even use all the features yet 😍

I also thought I'd add the Fluffy-fied Wolf that I used in the previous videos.
The Bee was taken from the 3D-Viewer that comes with Windows 10. I attached it to the Little Dragon model from Malbers and replaced the Model with it.
I modified the lighting and the reflections a bit. Most of all Global Illumination does Wonders in HDRP.
And I thought I'd spare everyone the humming Bee sound while watching, so there's no audio 😁

Well, I couldn't stop there. With my Animation Preview tool I picked the animations for the aliens and they just weren't anything without sound. So I wrote a few simple scripts that play sound when a node of an Animator Controller is being played. It didn't end there either, I wanted some camera shaking when the big alien stomps on the ground. Malbers mentioned I should use Cinemachine Impulse with his double and triple jump. So the same technique got applied to the stomping alien.
Of course being a desert I wanted to see tracks. I added Microsplat Tesselation's POM and then Microsplat Trax.
For the effects I used Unity's free Particle Pack. The aliens were distributed using YAPP. The AI is simply NavMesh with NavMesh Agent. Nothing special.
You can consider this episode one of a few videos I'm going to make. It was so much fun, I'd like to explore it more.
The project was created in Standard Pipeline.

And this is very exciting for me, so thank you very!!! 😊 One thing I'd like to mention though is that all credit belongs to the awesome Asset developers and their excellent, top rated assets. I only combine those. Same as this one. It's like playing with Lego for me. This morning I thought I'd install the Unity Beta of 2022.1 which came out today and try out the assets. So this is a quickly drafted up gameplay which I wanted to see how it looks, i. e. exploring the interior of this beautiful ArchVizPRO asset with a Fluffy Wolf.
By the way, Fluffy Grooming Tool is most awesome. I toyed around with it this week. It's not only for creating games, it's so much fun to just groom hair on any virtual animal. I should do another vid with it 😁

The scene is set up pretty much quickly. The player is controlled using the Malbers AC, the NPC Dwarfs, Orc and Troll each got a custom controller assigned which uses selected Kubold animations. I also added MicroSplat Tessellation's POM in order to make the gravel look less flat.
And while I was at it I also added the Malbers Wolf, Ravens and Rabbits. Because why not 😁
Next thing is make them fight each other. I have to find a good asset for that first.
