With its soft, creamy flesh and high energy content, durian is a particularly tempting treat for orangutans. And those spikes? Their powerful jaws, strong fingers and impressive dexterity help them handle the fruit and prise it open along its natural seams.

Judging by the orangutans in the care of our partners, YIARI, the only real challenge is working out how many durians one orangutan can carry at once.

$Cute Orphaned Orangutan Finds A New Mom #orangutans #wildlife Remember Randy? During our Christmas Appeal, many of you helped raise vital funds for orphaned orangutans like him, supporting our partners, YIARI’s surrogacy programme in Indonesia. Thanks to your kindness, we’re so pleased to share that Randy has now been paired with a surrogate mother: Seponti. When Randy was rescued during a joint operation by BKSDA West Kalimantan and our partners, YIARI, he was just two years old and being kept in a tiny cage in an illegal gold mining area in West Kalimantan. He was weak, undernourished and living in heartbreaking conditions, with barely enough room to turn around. He was being fed scraps of banana and bread, and vets also found evidence of earlier trauma in the form of a healed leg fracture. Now, Randy is making lovely progress in rehabilitation. Over the last couple of months, he has been getting to know Seponti, who was herself rescued as an orphan back in 2015. Their bond has been growing steadily, and Seponti is already showing encouraging signs of accepting Randy as her own by carrying him and being protective of him. Randy still has a long way to go, but this is such a positive step in his journey. Thank you for helping make moments like this possible.
