For Em kimbramusic 2021-03-21 | Emily Campbell was my best friend. She still is. But I feel her in different ways now. She lived till she was 30 years old. She died of a heart arrhythmia in September of 2020. She was one of the most amazing people I've ever known. She was a playwright, a visionary woman of Thai and European descent. She was and is an actress. Always breaking third walls and playing with characters and comedy and absurdity.She was deeply spiritual, yet irreverent, she could dance from deep wisdom to utter ridiculousness in a second. I want you to all be blessed by our friendship and her incredible spirit. If you have lost a close one, remember they're still here, so live to make them proud.Emily, your name will not be forgotten. You are missed so much. Somedays the only thing I can do to feel better is watch this video of us. And remember your light is still here. I'll try all I can to live like you lived... wild, free, daring and brave. x

I chose the song ‘Precious Lord, Take My Hand’ and arranged it for 4 vocalists including myself plus organ and upright bass. I believe so deeply in the work of Tirzah International and the way they partner with LOCAL programs run by Ethiopians (the Beza Empowerment Program) to empower them and the work they do with women and children.They run a program to help women embark on their own sustainable businesses. These women are experiencing deep change in their lives as they embark on a financially independent future. They receive seed money from the Beza empowerment program which allows them to take their skill and expand upon it.In the video I invite YOU to join with me in supporting the work of Tirzah. I asked if they would choose a song of mine to rework.••••They chose Everybody Knows & sent back their version. I was totally blown away by the way they took the song to a whole new place emotionally. It evoked new depth in the lyrics and had this hypnotizing patience to it with a quiet kind of violence and also a soft, strange intimacy. I felt like I was hearing the song & its meaning (even to myself) in a whole new way. ••••On making the rework, Nils (of Apothek) said to me, ‘Everybody Knows' has this extremely powerful chorus and it could easily be a much louder experience in a busier soundscape but I really enjoyed putting this song in a mellow and contemplative environment full of acoustic warped sounds where it could take as much or as little space as it needed. Sometimes it feels soulful, warm and free - other times it feels a bit wound up and expressive. I like that duality.’••••I felt so moved by the rework that I sent it to my friend Chester Travis (director of the video for 'Goldmine') to see if he would make a visual accompaniment for the song. We both felt this song was open to so many different interpretations but definitely agreed that the song speaks to oppression, and we wanted to show another side of that and have it represented by an entirely different video.••••This evokes heavy emotions and it’s not always easy to speak openly about the ways we experience oppression in our lives but I’m thankful that art is a way for us to see things anew, and it also grants us the freedom of individual interpretation. My friend Chester put this song in a stark domestic light that gave my lyrics an eerily poignant and even disturbing angle. But I think it’s important we use music to give us new (sometimes challenging) perspectives, thanks to the eyes that have courage to capture what we can’t always see so quickly for ourselves. Relative Peace (Oban Rework) - Kimbra X Young Dreams X Jaga Jazzist kimbramusic 2017-01-24 | This is a remix I made in collaboration with Young Dreams to reimagine the track ‘Oban’ by Jaga Jazzist from their last album Starfire ! Jaga Jazzist are one of my favorite bands and a way I like to stay inspired is to re-approach my favorite songs as a way to honour them and unveil different aspects of the original song. When the opportunity arose to reinterpret 'Oban' I was really excited at the challenge of developing such an incredibly dimensional and technicolour piece into more of a 'pop’ style arrangement.Young Dreams made an instrumental rework of the original song set in a psychedelic 70’s world. I fell in love with the mood of it and added a vocal and lyric in homage to that era of soul ballads.
