We're calling this new series Open Case Files, and the idea is pretty
simple. Instead of telling you what to believe, we're going to invite you
into the investigation with us. We're going to take one famous case, lay out
the evidence one piece at a time, and look at it the same way an
investigator would. We'll talk about what the witnesses claimed happened,
what evidence was reportedly found, what the skeptics have to say, and
where the holes in the story might be. By the end of the night, we'll each
tell you where we landed, but we're just as interested in hearing where you
landed.
One thing I want to ask before we get started is don't make up your mind
too early. That's one of the biggest mistakes investigators can make. It's
human nature to hear the first few facts and decide we've already solved
the case, but sometimes the evidence that changes your opinion doesn't
show up until much later. So tonight, just hang with us. Listen to
everything, consider every possibility, and then decide what you think
happened.

you've probably heard the name Ape Canyon, but my guess is most
people only know the legend. They don't know the investigation. They
know the headlines, but they don't know what was actually reported, how
the story evolved, or why nearly a hundred years later people are still
arguing about what happened.
So that's exactly what we're going to do tonight.
We're going back to October of 1924. We're going to put ourselves in the
boots of five gold prospectors working in the shadow of Mount St. Helens,
and we're going to examine everything they claimed happened as if this
case had landed on our desks this morning.
