If you have Shimano Altus canitlever brakes that are off-center, rubbing, squealing, or otherwise causing problems, check the plastic collar. If it's the older gray style, then check it for cracking. The old gray collars are VERY prone to cranking. If it's not cracked, it probably will crack. Especially if you try to tighten the adjusting screw. There is not really a good way to fix the broken collar. If it is cracked, the best thing is to just replace the brakes. Newer Shimano Altus brakes have a black plastic collar that doesn't seem to have the same cracking issue. At least I have never seen them cracked. On the other hand I have seen lots of broken gray collars.
