Randi Rain 2025-09-06 | This time I’m refurbishing a rare TOMY boxing game that was sold in the U.S. exclusively through The Sharper Image. The game uses a unique pneumatic system to throw punches, and it’s definitely one of TOMY’s odd and fancy creations.I originally refurbished this game once before, but when I pulled it out to play again, it had new issues. Instead of just fixing the broken spots, I went ahead and remade all of the fragile parts by molding and casting them in a much harder plastic. Radio Shack’s Electronic Shooting Gallery | Classic 80s Light Gun Toy Refurbished Randi Rain 2025-08-23 | I refurbished another classic Radio Shack toy from the 1980s—the Electronic Shooting Gallery. Despite the name, it’s not much of a “gallery,” since there’s only one target! The triangular box has a spinning disk, and when the included gun (really just a flashlight with a clever off-after-delay switch) is cocked and fired, it flashes light at the center target. If the sensor picks it up, the disk spins!It’s simple, quirky, and very Radio Shack. No orange safety tip on the gun (definitely a pre-regulation piece), just a straightforward light-activated game. The gun doesn’t aim perfectly straight, but that’s part of the charm. I got it working again, cleaned it up, and now it’s running like it did decades ago. It’s funny to think this cartoon was still under license back then, but now it's in the public domain.This piece had the usual issues: some broken gears, a few timing hiccups, and general wear. After a bit of careful repair, it’s back in action and working beautifully.There’s only one more true diorama I haven’t gotten to—well, two if you count the tribute to Mel Blanc, which is more of a mechanical sign than a full animated display.I still haven’t been able to find out much about the Animated Animations company. DIY Multi-Input PA Speaker from a Dead ELS GO 8BT Randi Rain 2025-08-02 | My ELS GO 8BT speaker finally stopped working. After checking all the usual suspects — power rails, caps, connections — I decided it wasn’t worth chasing ghosts. Instead, I gutted it and rebuilt it from scratch.I kept the original speakers but replaced everything else. I used a Woopker AK35 amp board, split it in half to mount inside a custom-built wooden enclosure, and added a 2-way crossover for better sound. It has multiple inputs — not just Bluetooth — so I can use it for live performances, including my stand-up comedy act.The box is finished in a dark faux wood grain and topped with a carry handle. MusicBot: Possibly the Most Annoying Toy Robot Ever Made (Playtime Productions, 1980s) Randi Rain 2025-06-07 | Here it is — the MusicBot from Playtime Productions, made in the 1980s — fully restored and now up for sale on eBay!This little bump-and-go robot was considered a marvel in its day because it could play electronic music from an IC chip — in this case, a truly horrific version of "When the Saints Go Marching In." It never shuts up, and that's part of its charm (or torture, depending on your perspective). I personally crown it the most annoying toy robot ever made.When I got it, the inside was a disaster. A serious battery leak left behind some weird crystallized goo that even melted a nylon gear — yeah, it was that bad. It was also missing the battery door, so I molded and cast a brand-new one from scratch. TOMY Horse Racing Restored: Watch It Gallop Like New! Randi Rain 2025-03-29 | I restored another vintage TOMY mechanical toy! This time, it's the Harness Racing set, which works like a rollercoaster. A lift hill powered by four belts pulls the racers up, and gravity sends them racing down the track. The belts were in rough shape, so I had to boil them to soften them back up. On top of that, I repaired several broken parts to get this classic toy working again. TOMY made several versions of this design, including motorcycles, cars, and even skateboarders. Refurbishing a Mystery Knockoff Robot – The CrapBot Rises! Randi Rain 2025-03-08 | In this video, I take on the challenge of refurbishing an unknown toy robot—a cheap Hong Kong knockoff of more popular wired controller robots. This thing isn’t special, but I still had to get it working. It moves forward in a straight line and reverses in a turn, just like similar robots, using a little metal tab to pivot. The biggest issue? A broken screw post. I first tried the CA glue and baking soda trick, but I’ve decided I don’t like that method—it’s too brittle. Instead, I used my heat pen and 3D printer filament to get a stronger fix. These earlier models featured a sophisticated drive mechanism and a remote control, but this version underwent some unfortunate changes—losing its remote, having its head glued in place, and swapping the advanced drive for a basic bump-and-go mechanism. While the de-evolution of this robot is a bit disappointing, it’s still one of my favorite designs.
