High-fidelity large-eddy simulation capturing combustion dynamics

To prepare for the planned upgrade, teams successfully implemented modifications to the radiation shielding in the Particle Accumulator Ring, which acts as a barrier to limit radiation exposure between the source of radiation and the area (or person) that needs to be protected.
Teams used Integrated Safety Management to make sure that work was performed safely and in an environmentally sound manner. Integrating safety into all facets of work planning and execution is a top priority at Argonne and ensures the protection of the worker, the public and the environment.

To do this, innovations that support clean energy need to be moved into the market quickly. This is where Lab-Embedded Entrepreneurship Program (LEEP) plays a key role. It accelerates the ability to reduce emissions. It also supports U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) goals to assure equity in the process.
LEEP supports innovation through two-year fellowship programs at Argonne National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

During this Science at Work: Electric vs. conventional vehicles – which are greener? presentation, Jarod Kelly, principal energy systems analyst, will discuss the environmental trade-offs in owning an EV vs. a conventional vehicle. He will also show how Argonne’s free tool – the Greenhouse Gases, Regulated Emissions, and Energy Use in Technologies (GREET) model – can track how nearly any vehicle, fuel, or material affects our environment.

The supply of rare earth minerals can be cut by natural disasters, mine closures, labor disputes, construction delays. Disruptions can have wide-ranging consequences. And such turmoil can linger in the rare earth markets for longer than we expect, as today’s shortage of semiconductors continues to roil the car market.
Here, Allison Bennett Irion, chair of Argonne’s Advanced Supply Chain Analytics initiative, will show how her team finds such insights by running one-of-kind models on the lab’s supercomputing resources.

Here, Angel Yanguas-Gil, principal materials scientist at Argonne, describes how his discoveries may allow AI to perform and adapt better and use much less power – less than one watt. Yanguas-Gil shows how designs for a neuromorphic computer chip can reduce power by one order of magnitude without sacrificing accuracy. To do this, his team drew on new materials, designs, and hardware.
