Did you know Sonic GT turns 5 this year? I remember working on this project with the team in between school assignments. Truth be told, I had absolutely no idea what I was doing back then and I barely remember my process for making music at that time, but I do remember I was super hyped to make music for a fangame that finally released, and was actually finished. I had a ton of fun working with all those guys in 2020 and I hope I can do so again.
My favorite part of this remix was transcribing the solo, which was and still is just incredible work by Maziero, and it's been stuck in my head for the past 5 years.

The sound chips do not always match the console target as most of these were mockups and sketches. Some tracks use the YM2612/SN76489 combination, some use the YM2151/RF5C68 combination, some use a conceptualized custom FM sound chip with 12 FM channels, 1 noise, and 1 PCM. All tracks were made with Furnace and/or Chipsynth MD.
1. Sakura Zone (YM2612 + SN76489 + RF5C68) Composed by Noveltyman & Nuclear, Arranged by Nuclear
I was given a basic melody and a mockup image of the stage. The original melody was turned into the B section, and I used the image to imagine a "flowery" type of stage, so there's an FM koto in there for a natural feel.
2. Palmtree Parkway Zone Act 1 (Custom FM chip) Composed by Noveltyman & Nuclear, Arranged by Nuclear
I was given the name, a mockup image, and a bassline. The bass was turned into the B section, and most of the rest of the inspiration came from the name. I wanted to create a Neo Green Hill-like solemn tone.
3. Palmtree Parkway Zone Act 2 (Custom FM chip) Composed by Noveltyman & Nuclear, Arranged by Nuclear
Obviously unfinished, but clearly happier than Act 1.
4. Bonus Stage 1 (YM2612 + SN76489 + SEGA 32x PWM) Composed and Arranged by Nuclear
The directions were "bonus stage with a Ristar reference."
5. Bonus Stage 2 (YM2612 + RF5C68) Composed and Arranged by Nuclear
I honestly don't remember anything about this track at all. I only remembered to include it when looking back through my unfinished projects.
6. Menu (YM2151 + RF5C68) Composed and Arranged by Nuclear
Fun fact: this is the first song I made after getting out of the hospital one time.
7. Boss (YM2612 + SN76489) Composed and Arranged by Nuclear
Very quick sketch I made to demonstrate a potential boss theme.
8. Mysterious Mansion Zone (YM2612 + SN76489) Composed and Arranged by Nuclear
There was supposed to be a White World-like hub world. This was its theme.

GM Roulette-8 collab album a few months ago with the DTM Midi Central discord server. The following is the liner notes for this song from the album:
"Sound Source: GASHISOFT GXSCC
It's called Pastiche because it's very obviously inspired by a prolific Japanese video game composer. (Hint: His initials are YY)
The rolling of Sitar (GM 105) is doing a lot of the heavy-lifting here, as in GXSCC, it has a hard transient and lots of harmonic content relative to the other instruments in the selection.
Tons of tricks here: pitch bending, octave doubling, panning LFOs, channel-based detune and echo on pretty much every instrument. During this project, I figured out you can use automation clips as notes, and playing those automation clips in the piano roll will trigger whatever automation the curve calls for, meaning you can do tracker-like auto-vibrato without having to manually insert a clip per-note.
I also use this for the "drums" pitch envelope, they're moving across 2400 cents (2 octaves) for every hit. Composition time was 1 hour and 37 minutes according to FL Studio.
By the way, there are 20,000 notes in this MIDI. Good luck playing this on a Sound Canvas!"

By changing the percentage of on/off in a volume modulation envelope which cycles at audio rates, you can create 12.5%, 25%, 50%, and 75% squares, or sweeps through the duty cycle range, like a 2A03. This is also how the lower-than-A2 pitch is achieved, rapidly modulating the volume of the channel to give the illusion of a lower octave.
Note: I'm using Chipsynth MD which allows you to modulate the operator level at extremely high rates. This is not possible in vanilla Furnace (but probably possible if you change the max rate in a fork) but is possible on hardware, as the rate of modulation is in the kilohertz while the SN74689 can be externally clocked in megahertz, meaning it's well within the speed that could be handled by a game's sound driver.

What a combination.
This one has been about a year in the making. I posted a WIP for this remake a while back, but only due to some recent finds by a VGM Sources member who wishes to remain uncredited, I wasn't able to finish it until now. We're only missing one minor percussion sample, which, in my opinion, wasn't enough to postpone the deconstruction any further. Some synths (like the pluck and synth lead) were remade by ear as they're essentially single-cycle waveforms that'd be more tedious to find the patches of than to recreate from scratch. According to FL, this took about 26 and a half hours of pure creation time, not counting the critical listening time. Every note you hear is transcribed by ear. Stems and project files in the description as always, make sure to use the included .fst in the Stems folder to match the mastering of the project, or else it might sound quiet and dull.
If someone could make markers for the video, that'd be great, and I'll put them in the description, but I am way too tired of listening to this song to do it myself. You could say I got a sugar ache.

You can make 1-op squares on the YM2612 by modulating the operator volume at audio rates. Combine this with Special Ch. 3 mode using Algorithm 7 and you have four 1-op squares (essentially an SN76489 without noise) in one channel. In addition to that, by changing the percentage of on/off in this modulation envelope, you can create 12.5%, 25%, 50%, and 75% squares, like a 2A03 (though the 25%/75% pulse is missing bass frequencies that I'm adding back in with a pure sine on Channel 3-Operator 1-Algorithm 7). You're basically doing FM on top of FM. With essentially repurposing the YM2612 as an expanded 2A03, I decided to demonstrate what it can do.
Note: I'm using Chipsynth MD which allows you to modulate the operator level at extremely high rates. This is not possible in vanilla Furnace (but probably possible if you change the max rate in a fork) but is possible on hardware, as the rate of modulation is in the kilohertz while the YM2612 is clocked in megahertz, meaning it's well within the speed that could be handled by a game's sound driver.

(YM2612 + SN76489 + RF5C68 Remix)Nuclear [NUKELEDGE]2024-09-01 | This is probably the longest chiptune project I've done to date in terms of creation time, mostly because I was relearning how to do multi-chip projects in FL Studio, as well as recreating the original track. I then had to port my work on the Genesis half over to GENNY from Chipsynth MD since I much prefer CSMD for actually creating chiptune, but it lacks .VGM logging. I do have .vgm files of each console (YM2612+SN76489, RF5C68) but the Genesis chips are way louder than the SCD PCM chip and I have no idea how to turn a .vgm's volume down. vgm_ptch and vgm_vol did not work. While vgm_ptch did decrease the Genesis chips' volumes down with the volume multiplier byte in the header, vgmmerge does not support the version of the VGM format that utilizes the volume multiplier byte, so I have no idea how to fix this.
Made with Chipsynth MD, GENNY (for VGM logging) and ValleyBell's MID2VGM RF.

Anyway, decided to continue with the mellower tone that I established with the Mad Gear remix, mostly because I think the YM2612 is easier to control when doing softer, brassy tones, and I already have a liking towards that palette of timbres so it's more fun for me to work with the chip that way.
This remix started off with me making the drum loop with the M1 VST and then going from there. Lots of switching between different algorithms in Extended Ch. 3 mode here, with algorithms 4 and 7 being the most useful for me. Second half has a reference to Mining Melancholy.

Oh also, I'm using a few tricks here. First is Special Channel 3 Mode using OP1+2 to make a 2-op lead patch and then OP3+4 as echo, which I learned from Savaged Regime. As well as that, PSG 2 is using a very rapid self-modulating volume LFO to basically create a PWM sound which I can use to give the illusion of playing more than one note at a time, though I have to manually tune the cycle speed of the LFO to whatever note is playing which is why it's not doing anything besides chord backing. I also use this trick on FM 3 occasionally for a pinch harmonic sound.

I decided to do the same for Sonic 1. I wasn't allowed to listen to the OST beforehand or at any point from the start to the end of the project, nor was I allowed to go back and change anything if I suddenly remembered that I was wrong. One render and that's it. I got all of the .VGMs in a folder and ripped the instruments to .tfi, although the convertor is spotty meaning I had to (manually!) edit patches to what they should've sounded like only from memory. This took a couple weeks, so you can hear as I gradually taper off with what I remember from the OST. Going through it to put it all together and render in Corrscope, I already notice that I forgot the entire intro for Final Zone. There are some parts of songs that I remember well, and some parts that don't, so you'll hear parts that are nearly 1:1 with the original and then a different part of the same song that's completely off. It's like "Everywhere at the End of Time" but for Sonic. Sonic Dimentia.

I think I've tried at least 30 since the last one uploaded to this channel and not a single one of them was worth publishing until I decided to do this one today. I think it's because it's such a simple but full song that just arranging it already gives you room to inject your own flair without having to rework the whole project. I do love those complete re-imaginings but I needed to do something simple before essentially relearning how to make good FM re-imaginings again.
For the chords, I'm heavily using the Special Ch. 3 mode of the OPNA to make major and minor chords with dyadic patches modified from Thunder Force IV. Most of the patches come from there actually, with a few from Sonic 3, electric guitar solo instrument modified from Time Trax, and a few being custom. Drums are from the Roland XV-5080.
I chose the OPNA because it's essentially OPN2 without the DAC noise and LPF of the Genesis, and SEGA PCM because of the crunchiness of its lack of resampling filter.

Sorry, I mean, Superstars has leaked extremely early and I've been combing through the OST and heavily researching Senoue's tracks in particular. There are several demo versions of tracks arranged by other composers, notably Bridge Island Zone Act 1, which I will remake and deconstruct soon. Meanwhile, here's a deconstruction of an already-revealed track, as to not cause any spoilers. More deconstructions of unrevealed tracks will release on or after the 17th to respect the wishes of players who don't want to be spoiled before the game officially launches.
Interesting facts: Superstars is the first time that Senoue has ever used effects for arrangement in his Classic Sonic tracks other than delay. Several patches in this song have chorus or reverb on them, which Senoue does not remove, unlike Sonic 4 Episode I and II, where he makes sure everything is as dry as possible. Senoue also utilizes Xpand!2 much more heavily than Vacuum, to the point where the frequency of the two plugins essentially has switched from Episode II, where Vacuum was more prevalent. This lends itself to a "softer," less harsh tone that Episode II leaned into with its nature vs. technology theming. It may not seem like it, but Senoue's style has definitely evolved from Episode II, and I believe this is the direction he would've gone in had Sonic 4 Episode III had come to fruition.
By the way, if you're wondering how I transcribed the Sonic 1 drums, the drumloop from Big Fish Audio BiPolar perfectly phase inverts to where you can hear the drumline on its own.

It features three stages: Jerry, Kramer, and George. This is audio recorded from the Sound Test of the SEGA CD enhanced version.
(This is a fake OST I created based on an AI meme image that a friend showed me in the VGM Sources server.)

The drums are from Salad Plain Past's intro as you can't get more accurate than the actual song itself, but everything else has been recreated, including the original tom. Personally, my favorite part is the combination of the Rhodes and acoustic bass, it's pretty much perfect as far as music goes, in my opinion.

My first official (original) EP. You'd think I'd have made one by now, but I'm in the habit of just making single songs and then never publishing them anywhere.
The concept of Simplicity was making songs with only hardware. All of these tracks were composed and arranged by me with synthesizers and samplers, with only software mixing involved in the production process (except for Track 07 which uses an emulated SEGA Genesis).

I wasn't happy with it, so I decided to completely redo it with our new instrument and mixing knowledge, and got it done very quickly. CCR was a huge help as the project's mixing wouldn't sound as close as it does without him, though there are still minor changes I could make.

I've done extensive hands-on research with the gear he used and have heavily analyzed every piece of music he's ever made (yes, all of them) for the Sonic series and I've decided to put that information to use.
Today, we'll be creating an extra track for Cannon's Core in Sonic Adventure 2 to fill in the gaps of the original game's tracklist. To my knowledge, this is the first accurate "SA2 remix" to ever exist, and hopefully more will be created using this video.
P.S.: Sorry about some of the audio issues, our recording setup was a bit inconsistent, OBS was being odd, and Vegas Pro was similarly uncooperative, but they'll be fixed next time!

Every song has been remade from scratch, so no stretching or squashing (apart from the scratch sample in Metropolis since it's tempo-mapped), and includes some new parts such as the beginning and end. Make sure to look out on @ChurchofKondoh where I'll be posting the gamespeed versions of the demo tracks when they're completed.

Because of this, along with some encouragement from some game development and composer friends, I've decided to make a quick video getting rid of the most egregious ones, so hopefully I can stop seeing these in every discussion thread.
Small correction: The Genesis uses the Texas Instruments SN76489 to play its PSG tones.

Lots of findings were made over a short period of time that allowed this to happen. The key sample that I'm sure a lot of people are wondering about is the near-gibberish at the end, which is sampled from Daddy Freddy - Talking Beatbox (ft. Pat Kelly). It's actually Jamaican Patois which is why we couldn't figure out the lyrics for it until Google Assistant made it possible to find. Bass and brass are recreated, but besides that, everything here has its original source.
