Catherine HanselMay 18, 2019 Fascinating to learn more about this volcanic event that my mom witnessed when she was a teen. 39 years after the eruption in 1980, it is one of the most magnificent and breathtaking views I have ever seen, and it's right here in the my Washington State backyard in the Cascade Mountain Range! Admission to the Johnston Ridge Observatory is free every year on May 18th, which is the day that the eruption happened.

Had such a fun and amazing road trip with friends over Labor Day Weekend to Central Oregon!
On our way back, just northwest of Madras, we saw the orange volcanic-like glow of a wildfire on the cusp of a distant hill. Come to find out, only three days later, many small towns that we had driven through on our route to Bend along Highway 22 (just east of Salem) had been devastated and nearly, if not completely, lost by wildfire. My footage in and around Detroit, OR is some of the last taken before fire came through this lovely area.
My town and many others on the west coast are currently covered in a thick layer of toxic smoke. Pray for the evacuees, pray for the firefighters, and pray for rain!

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. – John 3: 16Silver Star Mountain, Washington HIKECatherine Hansel2020-08-01 | July 24, 2020 Though we were unable to see the surrounding mountains (Mt. Hood, Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Adams) because of the fog at the summit, the entirety of the hike was amazing and absolutely worth it! Seeing the fog move over the hills and the wildflowers at sunset was stunning. If you’re thinking of taking on this very steep hike, be prepared for the muscle aches!

We found a little surprise at the border in Blaine, Washington called Peace Arch Park. We had no idea a place like this existed where both Canadians and Americans could hang out together, let alone a Canadian neighborhood only a literal footstep away. Of course, the border is currently closed to nonessential travel due to the pandemic, so much fewer people were going through customs than usual. Such an interesting experience.
For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. – John 3: 16June Lake, Washington – Mt. St. Helens HIKECatherine Hansel2020-07-18 | July 8, 2020 June Lake rests on the south side of Mt. St. Helens at the foot of the beautiful and majestic volcano. Since the blast zone of the eruption in 1980 was on the north side of the mountain, the nature around June Lake was relatively protected and unharmed, though much ash and other signs of the recent volcanic activity can be found. This lovely little hike has great views of my favorite Cascade along the way, as well a charming thin waterfall pouring into the lake.

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. – John 3: 16Crater Lake National Park – Deepest Lake in the USACatherine Hansel2020-06-26 | June 20, 2020 Crater Lake, which is located in south central Oregon, was formed by the collapse of a volcano several thousand years ago. The lake is the deepest in the country at 1,949 feet and is Oregon’s only national park. At an elevation of over 6,000 feet, 100% of Crater Lake’s water comes from precipitation and snow that melts off of the surrounding cliffs and mountains, giving the lake its natural clarity and beautiful deep blue color.

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. – John 3: 16Maryhill, Washington – Desert, Stonehenge & WindmillsCatherine Hansel2020-06-20 | June 17, 2020 On the east side of the Cascades, after not so long of a drive through the Columbia River Gorge, you’ll find yourself in a completely different and dry landscape, golden brown and deprived of pine trees—almost desert-like. It’s a sunny and quick getaway, as well as a fun chance to see different surroundings. Drive 45 minutes from Hood River (which is a little over an hour east of Portland), and you’ll find yourself exploring the jagged and rocky cliff faces of Oregon and the windmill covered hillsides of a neat little area called Maryhill, Washington, where you can also find a miniature replica of Stonehenge. Looking around the dry and desolate land that surrounds both sides of the river here, it’s almost hard to believe that you’re still in the Pacific Northwest, but are surely reminded of your location once you turn to see Mt. Hood or Mt. Adams. Also at Maryhill, you will find a grand art museum featuring both local and European art, which is, of course, temporarily closed due to the current pandemic.
Maryhill is one of my favorite places. I love to just sit and look at the windmills, vineyards, and river.
