Dedicated to all the hostages currently in the hands of terrorists in Gaza. May God bring them home unscathed immediately and heal their bodies and souls. May God protect our soldiers and guide the hands, helping them defeat Ḥamas and all our enemies swiftly and effectively, and may God bring peace to Israel and the whole Middle East.
Eshal Elohai: A Yemenite piyut written by Yehosef ben Yisrael, 17th century
I ask my God – redeem the hostages, gather the scattered ones In the merit of the one called father of multitudes of nations [=Abraham], may they merit life When they call out in Your name, let them be answered, for they are desired Do not pass them over into the hands of despicable ones, for they are treasured In the merit of the one whose name was called mistress, Yiskah and Sarah and [the merit of] her son [Isaac] who heard the voice of Mighty [God], and was bound like cattle And [the merit of] all the descendants of Jacob who are miserable because they are oppressed In the merit of their ancestors return their captives, and rebuild their homes Let us go up to our Land with song and rejoicing, singing and celebrationבערבות הנגב / BeArvot HaNegev / In the Wilderness of the NegevHillel Lavery-Yisraëli2024-02-21 | Thinking about the soldiers and the hostages, I created this second experiment. A beautiful Israeli folk song called "Be'arvot HaNegev" - בערבות הנגב - meaning "In the Plains of the Negev", about a dialog between a mother and her soldier son. Hard to sing without getting teary. 🙁 I'll put a translation of the lyrics below. May all our soldiers and all the hostages come home immediately, unharmed, and may the world be completely rid of Ḥamas and other terror organizations once and for all, so we can all live in peace!
The text and the melody are based on a 1943 Soviet song about a partisan dying at the edge of a forest, "Na opushke lesa," words by Petr Mamaichuk, music by Leonid Shokhin. The Hebrew lyrics were written by Refael Kelatchkin (sp?) and Menashe Behrav in 1948 and made famous sung by Yaffa Yarkoni.
Lyrics, translated: In the wilderness of the Negev the dew shines in the wilderness of the Negev a protector fell the youth does not breathe and his heart is now still his wavy hair will now be caressed by the wind Shocked with sadness and terrible loss an elderly mother stands and raises her voice a tear flows from the eyes of your mother a bullet of lead came and penetrated your heart. My firstborn I lost in the depths of the sea, And you, I raised, to protect our people They won't break us through orphans and bereaved parents, They won't uproot us, no matter what." Then a tall boy stepped forward and said to her - "Mother, don't lose yourself in tears!" Our boys, mother, in days of service in front of our enemies, mother, are like a wall of steel. Standing before a bandit, a king, bloodthirsty, threatening, allow me and i will be a son to you!" In the wilderness of the Negev he held her hand if you will it, my friends, it is no dream!Bemotzaei Yom Menuḥa / במוצאי יום מנוחהHillel Lavery-Yisraëli2024-02-21 | Tried doing a little recording - me, myself and I: A song for Saturday nights, Bemotza'ei Yom Menuḥa - "As the Day of Rest Leaves".
