Thomas Dixon took us on a Valentine's Day journey: how it started, the path the holiday took, and what our celebrations of love on Valentine's Day look like now. He had talked about how holidays are far from static and how they change over time. Thomas Dixon is the author of a memoir, I'm Sorry... That's Awesome!: Inventing a Solution for Memory Loss. In November 2010, Thomas was out for a run when he was struck by a car sustaining life-threatening injuries. Since that day, his episodic memory hasn’t been the same– specific, autobiographical details like where he was, who he's met, what he ate and the like – has been compromised by the traumatic brain injury he sustained that afternoon. He invented [ME.mory](http://me.mory/) – which is a digital memory mobile application/service which he uses in his own life. Thomas spoke and wrote on the role of technology's benefits for faulty episodic memory. His memory challenge had not slowed him down! Members of the public, who depend on advances made by science for health and economic prosperity, must be engaged to understand what is happening and to speak out.Dr. Jeremy Berg is a Professor of Computational and Systems Biology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Berg received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in chemistry. He started as an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Johns Hopkins University in 1986. He moved to the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine as Director of the Department of Biophysics and Biophysical Chemistry in 1990. DiCarlo’s presentation was entitled “Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Humanity.” In his lecture DiCarlo talked about three things: First, he reviewed the basics of Artificial Intelligence (AI) so that everyone could be roughly on the same page in reference to key terms, concepts, and issues. Second, he explained some of the promising benefits and potential harms that such new technologies will bring to humanity.Lastly, he talked about what members of the public, can do to help mitigate the risks of AI. His recently published book, "Building A God," was discussed during his presentation. DiCarlo is a philosopher, educator, and author. Thomas Paine Monument Advisory Commission Sep 4 Meeting v2 Freethought Society 2024-10-15 | On September 4, 2024, an online meeting took place with members of NCMAC. The Thomas Paine Memorial Association sought the approval of National Capital Memorial Advisory Commission (NCMAC) in order to move forward with the project. Margaret Downey and Congressman Jamie Raskin presented many reasons why Paine is deserving of a memorial and they emphasized that the story of the founding of the United States of America is not complete without highlighting Paine’s historic contributions. Garcia is the author of "Alpha God: The Psychology of Religious Violence and Oppression" and "Sex, Power, And Partisanship." Actor Jon Huertas opened the program with a special message. He has starred in the television series "This is Us," "Castle," and many others. He is also a Hollywood director and producer. The 2023 Secular Day of the Dead/Día de los Muertos Secular program includes musical performances and unique presentations by Rolando Ávila, Martin Bonfil, Abraham López LaFuente, Sevy Hernández, Daniel Zepeda, Bonnizu Servin, Salvador León, and Marceline Sánchez.

This recording was made possible with the help of the Freedom From Religion Foundation, Center for Inquiry, Thomas Paine Memorial Association, and the Freethought Society.Thomas Paine was a Deist, like many of the Founders of the United States of America. Deism is an intellectual movement of the 17th and 18th centuries that accepted the existence of a creator on the basis of reason, but rejected belief in a supernatural deity who interacts with humankind.Thomas Paine’s book "The Age of Reason" was written to explain Deism and in that book he states, “One good schoolmaster is of more use than a hundred priests.” There is much to learn about Deism and how it relates to the modern world. The online webinar was held on Sunday, January 29th. Representative Jamie Raskin shared updates on the Congressional front along with a heartfelt welcome.In September 2022, Representative Victoria Spartz became a co-lead of House Bill 6720 (a Congressional Bill to endorse a Washington, D.C. monument to honor Thomas Paine). She delivered a welcome and disclosed her favorite Thomas Paine quotation.Mark Dann, the Freedom From Religion Foundation’s Director of Governmental Affairs provided insight into how legislative supporters were found and how House Bill 6720 became law.The keynote speaker was Professor Emeritus of History at the University of London, Greg Claeys. His speech “Thomas Paine's Collected Works: A New Edition,” provided an update about efforts to uncover previously unattributed Paine writings. TPMA board members each read a Thomas Paine Day proclamation, citation, or resolution as examples of how a proclamation can be written to honor the life of our freethought hero. Thomas Paine Day is celebrated on June 8th every year. In Europe his date of death is used as an official time to reflect upon and honor his life accomplishments. Paine died on June 8, 1809. A City of Philadelphia proclamation, signed by former mayor Michael A. Nutter, was read by author and educator Christopher Cameron.Author, producer, and director Ann Druyan read a Pennsylvania House of Representatives Thomas Paine Day Resolution.Author, comedian, and monologist Julia Sweeney read a City of Philadelphia proclamation signed by former Mayor Edward G. Rendell.Margaret Downey, president of TPMA, read a Thomas Paine Day Philadelphia City Council Resolution. Author and educator Frances Chiu read the Cherry Hill, New Jersey proclamation. President and CEO of CFI, Robyn Blumner, read the Bordentown, New Jersey proclamation. Actor Ian Ruskin read a New Rochelle, New York proclamation which was recently submitted to the Mayor’s office. . Annie Laurie Gaylor, co-president of FFRF read the Urbana, Illinois proclamation. Actor John de Lancie and his wife Marnie Mosiman de Lancie read proclamations from the cities of Lancaster and York, Pennsylvania. The 2023 June 8th Thomas Paine Day will be enhanced when more proclamations are written and approved by mayors, governors, and city councils. Providing the celebratory music are selections from a new musical "The Crossing." The play places Thomas Paine and his "American Crisis" front and center. "The Crossing" was written by Jason Huza and John Allen Watts. Fernando Alcántar delivered a compelling speech entitled “Free to Love: Life Lessons from Our Dead.” Alcántar honored the lives lost during the 2016 Pulse nightclub shooting. Musicians Kaneko Leyva and Juan Garcia Hernandez provided 10 minutes of beautiful flute and sax music. Bonnizu Servin and Dr. Salvador Leon used music, poetry and beautiful photos to present a touching memorial recognizing the life of their father Antonio Leon. Servin sang Amor Eterno, a famous song from Mexican artist Juan Gabriel. Jake Ritter, the Program Support and Communications Coordinator for the American Ethical Union was the Zoom technician for the 2022 Secular Day of the Dead/Día de los Muertos Secular event. Messenger is a civil celebrant, author, and a founder of the civil celebrant movement, which originated in Australia. NCMAC Thomas Paine, 8 22, for YouTube Freethought Society 2022-08-16 | Every proposed Washington, D.C. monument and museum must be presented to the National Capital Memorial Advisory Commission (NCMAC) for consideration. The members of the Commission vote on whether or not the proposal has merit and is deserving of their endorsement. In this film, Thomas Paine Memorial Association (TPMA) spokespersons are featured delivering a presentation to NCMAC on July 27, 2022. Spoiler alert! The NCMAC Commissioners unanimously voted to endorse and support a memorial project dedicated to the life and work of Thomas Paine! The event was hosted by FS President Margaret Downey and FS Board Member Dave Rice.The event started at 3:45 PM PDT/6:45 PM EDT with the introduction of comedian Ian Harris. His 15-minute standup routine took a humorous look at superstitions and irrational beliefs that permeate American culture.At 4:00 PM PDT/7:00 PM EDT social activist Babu Gogineni told us about superstitions that prevail in India. Included in his presentation were shocking disclosures and unthinkable practices that are thought to have magical benefits strong enough to change the course of nature.At 4:30 PM PDT/7:30 PM EDT FS Board Member Norm Allen conveyed the many African superstitions he witnessed and dealt with throughout his 30-year career as the Founder and President of African Americans for Humanism. He shared the horror of witch hunts and the belief that using certain body parts of albinistic people can transmit magical powers.The keynoted speaker was author Stuart Vyse. His presentation will start at 5:00 PM PDT/8:00 PM EDT. Vyse is an American psychologist, teacher, speaker and author who specializes in critical thinking and belief in superstitions. His book "Believing in Magic: The Psychology of Superstition" won the William James Book Award of the American Psychological Association and was translated into Japanese, German, and Romanian.

Chetan Kumar Ahimsa 2022 Presentation Freethought Society 2022-03-24 | The Freethought Society and the American Ethical Union were pleased to host Chetan Ahimsa via Zoom on Thursday, March 10, 2022. Ahimsa is an actor in Karnataka, India and a political/social activist.The 15-minute pre-event chat social highlighted some of the films in which Ahimsa has appeared.Ahimsa is known for his efforts protesting against the Indian caste system. He told us what motivates him to be a social activist.Ahimsa credits his mother, Mangala Kumar, and his father, Amar Kumar (both doctors), for providing him with the willpower to continue his important activism work, but as a young adult Ahimsa studied the writings of Erode Venkatappa Ramasamy.Revered as “Periyar,” Ramasamy was an Indian social activist and politician who started the Self-Respect Movement called Dravidar Kazhagam. He is known as the Father of the Dravidian, a social movement that advocates to eradicate the ills of the existing caste system including untouchability. Ahimsa talked about Periyar’s importance in India’s rational thinking movement, the acceptance of atheism, and to himself personally.
Norm Allen Presentation February 2022 Final Freethought Society 2022-03-20 | In celebration of the 2022 Black History Month, the Freethought Society was pleased to host author Norm Allen on Saturday, February 26, 2022. Allen’s speech highlighted the founding and work done by African Americans for Humanism.Allen talked about his trailblazing efforts as the first full-time African American Humanist activist traveling the world to promote humanism, freethought, and skepticism.Allen has promoted organized humanism in Europe, African, Asia, Latin America, and North America. His book, “African American Humanism: An Anthology” (1991), was the first to demonstrate “the extent to which humanism and freethought have helped to access, explore, interpret, and substantially develop the history and ideals of Black intellectualism” and activism. Allen also edited the “AAH Examiner,” the only journal explicitly by and for Humanists of African decent.
Thomas Paine Zoom January 29 2022 Freethought Society 2022-02-01 | On Saturday, January 29, 2022, hundreds of people gathered on Zoom to celebrate the birthdate of an often-forgotten Founding Father, Thomas Paine. Hailed as “Freethought Hero,” and great patriot, the January 29th event was, as far as we know, the very first Zoom celebration of his birth. Zoom connections were made from all over the world and everyone was invited to deliver a toast in celebration of the life and work of this amazing champion of reason, independent thought, and revolutionary ideas. The event was presented by the newly-formed Thomas Paine Memorial Association (TPMA), a 501(c)3 organization, with the purpose of educating the public and installing statues of Thomas Paine in Washington, DC, and other places of significance to the life of Thomas Paine. The American Humanist Association, Center for Inquiry, Freedom From Religion Foundation, Freethought Society, the Stiefel Freethought Foundation, and the Thomas Paine National Historical Association were cosponsors. During the Thomas Paine Birthdate Celebration, the Stiefel Freethought Foundation (SFF) offered an opportunity to TRIPLE any donation that was received. The 2021 Tree of Knowledge Second Zoom Celebration Freethought Society 2021-12-09 | The traditional decorating of The Tree of Knowledge continued via Zoom on Sunday, December 5, 2021. The Philadelphia Ethical Society (co-host Hugh Taft-Morales) and the Freethought Society (co-hosts Margaret Downey and Michael Steven Martin) presented author Phil Zuckerman.Zuckerman is the author of several books, including "What It Means to be Moral," "The Nonreligious," "Living the Secular Life," "Faith No More," and "Society Without God." He is an Associate Dean as well as Professor of Sociology at Pitzer College, and the founding chair of the nation’s first Secular Studies Program. Zuckerman is also the Executive Director of Humanist Global Charity. Zuckerman lives in Claremont, California, with his wife and three children. The event began with a pre-event musical performance by performer Gary Stockdale. Stockdale is a two-time Emmy-nominated composer, songwriter and singer. Audience members were able to recommend book ornaments for the Tree of Knowledge after a brief Stockdale musical interlude. Included in the second part of the program were authors John Loftus and Debra Deanne Olson. Also featured was sculptor Zenos Frudakis who talked about his beautiful creation "Knowledge is Power."

France 2 Coverage of Friday the Thirteenth Superstitions Freethought Society 2021-10-13 | France 2 became interested in how the Freethought Society teaches critical thinking skills on Friday the Thirteenth. A journalist was sent to interview Margaret Downey about the online Friday the Thirteenth event presented on Zoom August 13, 2021. This is a preview of their show. Downey is the President of the Freethought Society and the creator of the Friggatriskaidekaphobia Treatment Center.
2021 Grand Opening of the Online Friggatriskaidekaphobia Treatment Center Freethought Society 2021-08-31 | Nowhere in the entire world has there been a Friday the Thirteenth online anti-superstition bash until August 13, 2021! The grand opening of the 2021 Friggatriskaidekaphobia Online Treatment Center was sponsored by the Center for Inquiry (CFI) and the Freethought Society (FS).During the Pre-Event Social, singer extraordinaire, Rich DeSimone will perform a mini-concert of Frank Sinatra songs, including "Luck be a Lady," "Devil Moon," and "Witchcraft."Friggatriskaidekaphobia doctors and nurses provided long-distance treatments that involved humorous and fun-loving interaction as superstitions were dispelled and cured. A “Clean Bill of Mental Health” was awarded to participants who participate and follow the “doctor’s orders.” Participants were asked to take an “Anti-Horoscope Consulting Pledge” and participate in trashing their Zodiac signs. The 2021 Friggatriskaidekaphobia Treatment Center offered a continuing education session with famous skeptic and “Anti-Superstition Professor of Rational Thinking” Benjamin Radford. His presentation was entitled “The Curse of Magical Thinking.” Though magical thinking can seem wonderful, imbuing the world with meaning and magic, there is a darker side to it. From lucky rabbit’s feet (not so lucky for the rabbit!) to gambler’s fallacies, Radford will examine psychological, cultural, and folkloric aspects of superstition, curses, luck, and much more. Though some magical beliefs are harmless, others can have unexpectedly harmful and even deadly conse-quences. Learn about the history of these beliefs as well as how to replace magical beliefs with science and reason. Radford has degrees in psychology and education, and is a Research Fellow with the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry. He is the author of a dozen books on critical thinking, science education, and media literacy. Radford is Deputy Editor of Skeptical Inquirer science magazine and co-host of the pod-cast "Squaring the Strange." To poke fun at fortunetelling, Christina Magallanes-Jones attended as the Friggatriskaidekaphobia Treatment Center’s Miss Fortune Teller. Kate Forest July 10 2021 Zoom Freethought Society 2021-08-30 | The Freethought Society was pleased to host Kate Forest, a Life Cycles Officiant for the Jewish Children’s Folkshul and Adult Community in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Saturday, July 10, 2021 via Zoom.Folkshul welcomes all who want to be part of our Jewish community including, but not limited to, folks who are culturally Jewish, agnostic, atheist, spiritual, self-identified Jewish, Jew-ish, Jew-curious, in an interfaith family, LGBTQ, leaving Judaism, returning to Judaism, freethinkers, humanists, grandparents, singles, couples, and parents-trying-to-give-their-kids-good-values-and-a-cultural-identity-in-a-nonreligious-setting. Everyone is welcome! Forest’s speech is entitled “Jewish without God: Living a meaningful Secular Jewish Life.” She described the many branches of the Jewish tree. Most of these branches are theistic, but increasingly Jews are defining themselves as non-believers or atheists. Secular Humanistic Judaism allows Jews to retain a cultural Jewish identity without practicing a religion that is incompatible with their beliefs. Despite objections from some Jewish communities, Secular Jews provide an inclusive, relevant experience.
Thomas Paine Day Event 2021 Freethought Society 2021-06-13 | On June 8, 2021, the Freethought Society (FS), Thomas Paine National Historical Association (TPNHA), the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), the Center for Inquiry (CFI), and the American Humanist Association (AHA) hosted a celebration of the 2021 Thomas Paine Day.The program began at 3:45 PM PST/6:45 PM EST with a 15-minute Thomas Paine-themed concert by songwriter and recording artist James Klueh. Melissa Myers (representing CFI) and Margaret Downey (representing FS) were the event co-hosts.After an introductory statement from Congressman Jamie Raskin, co-sponsor organizations welcomed everyone to the event (Annie Laurie Gaylor, Robyn Blumner, Mandisa Thomas, Gary Berton and Margaret Downey). 2021 National Day of Reason Mayday For Humanity Freethought Society 2021-05-10 | On Thursday, May 6, 2021, the Freethought Society, Recovering From Religion, the Freedom From Religion Foundation, the Secular Student Alliance and the Secular Coalition for America celebrated The National Day of Reason by hosting a Zoom entertainment extravaganza entitled “Mayday for Humanity.” Comedians Leighann Lord and Ian Harris co-hosted the 3-hour event. They ushered in an array of comedians, poets, and musical performers. All funds donated during the event benefitted homeless shelters and food banks selected by the co-sponsors. Beneficiary organizations operate in a nondiscriminatory and secular manner. This entertaining and enlightening program interweaves messages from co-sponsors, celebrity supporters, and people who are conducting grassroots community service projects during the 2021 Secular Week of Action (April 30-May 9). Nontheist Hispanics and others view the Secular Day of the Dead as a perfect way to remember the legacy of dead loved ones that does not require prayer, church, or religious dogma. To nontheists, our legacies are our afterlife. The Secular Day of the Dead event included many redesigned and religion-free Hispanic traditions and rituals that celebrate our one and only life, legacies and cultural heritage. More and more people are abandoning their religious upbringing, but still want to celebrate the beauty of the Hispanic culture. This is why a Secular Day of the Dead was created. Andrew Seidel Presentation October 10, 2020 Freethought Society 2020-10-19 | The Freethought Society was pleased to host author and attorney Andrew L. Seidel on Saturday, October 10, 2020 for his presentation, “The Founding Myth: Why Christian Nationalism is Un-American.” His presentation was based on his book by the same name. Seidel is the Director of Strategic Response at the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF). When not fighting for the First Amendment with FFRF, Andrew writes for Slate, ThinkProgress, Religion News Service, Rewire News and many other publications. Renowned constitutional scholar Erwin Chemerinsky described The Founding Myth: Why Christian Nationalism is Un-American as “a beautifully written book” that “explodes a frequently expressed myth: that the United States was created as a Christian nation.” Seidel’s book illustrates that not only is the United States not a Christian nation, but Judeo-Christian principles are fundamentally opposed to the values on which America was founded. Religion, law, and history collide in this presentation. The question and answer segment is very interesting.

The party took place online via Zoom. The afternoon virtual party included special guests and live music. Tom Krattenmaker September 19, 2020 Freethought Society 2020-10-09 | On September 19, 2020, the Freethought Society hosted award-winning author and USA Today columnist Tom Krattenmaker for an online Zoom presentation entitled “A New Vision for Secular Transcendence.”Krattenmaker’s talk addressed how religion faded from importance in contemporary life along with a sense of transcendence, which is traditionally understood as the experience of “rising above” the mundane, ordinary aspects of our lives. Krattenmaker presented his alternative vision for a secular, or horizontal, transcendence that does not depend on belief in a deity or supernatural ideas but, rather, on people’s connections to one another and to life on our imperiled planet. As a columnist, Krattenmaker specializes in beliefs and values in public life. He is the author of three award-winning books: Onward Christian Athletes, The Evangelicals You Don’t Know, and, most recently, Confessions of a Secular Jesus Follower, which was named one of the top two religion books of 2016 by the Religion News Association.
Professor Christopher Cameron August 1, 2020 Freethought Society 2020-09-11 | The Freethought Society was pleased to host Professor Christopher Cameron on Saturday, August 1, 2020 for an online Zoom presentation entitled “Black Freethought from Slavery to Civil Rights.” His talk is based on his book, "Black Freethinkers: A History of African American Secularism." Cameron’s talk explored the origins of Black freethought among 19th century slaves, many of whom could not reconcile notions of a loving God with their condition on Earth. The talk examined freethought in the 20th century as well as cultural and political movements such as the Harlem Renaissance, radical leftist politics, and the Black Power movement. Cameron argues that religious skepticism was prevalent among some of the most prominent voices in African American history, including Frederick Douglass, Richard Wright, James Baldwin, Lorraine Hansberry, Huey Newton, and Alice Walker. Cameron is a history professor at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with research and teaching interests in African American and early American history, including slavery, the antislavery movement, religious and intellectual history. His first book, "To Plead Our Own Cause: African Americans in Massachusetts and the Making of the Antislavery Movement," explored the relationship between Puritan theology and the rise of black abolitionism, arguing throughout the work that African Americans were central to the development of the antislavery movement in America.
Mandisa Thomas July 11, 2020 Freethought Society 2020-09-10 | The Freethought Society was pleased to host Mandisa Thomas on Saturday, July 11, 2020 for a presentation entitled “Women of Color Beyond Belief: Where Do We Go From Here?” In 2019, Black Nonbelievers, Black Skeptics, and the Women’s Leadership Project hosted the first-ever conference that featured nontheist women of color. With the constant call to action in addressing diversity and inclusion, how can the secular community better work with and support the organizations who serve this need? Thomas discussed the conference goals and the work that women of color offer in the secular movement. She also advised on improving communication with people of color and subject matters pertaining to race, reproductive justice, and other issues that affect marginalized demographics. Thomas currently serves on the boards of the American Humanist Association and American Atheists. She was the Unitarian Universalist Humanist Association’s 2018 “Person of the Year,” the Freedom From Religion Foundation’s “Free-thought Heroine” for 2019, and the Secular Student Alliance’s 2019 Backbone Award winner. As President of Black Nonbelievers, Thomas works to encourage more people of color to come out and stand strong with their nonbelief in the face of such strong religious overtones.
