Violine: Johannes Gebauer (Hans Schmidt, Kassel 1811, Bogen: Dodd-Workshop ca. 1850)

(recorded simultaneously via the internet, June 2020)
Violin: Johannes Gebauer (Hans Schmidt, Kassel 1811, Bow: Dodd workshop ca. 1850)
Piano: Sebastian Bausch (Bösendorfer, Vienna 1908, model with Viennese action)
This video was recorded in the early summer of 2020 during the Corona-pandemic and the subsequent lockdown. Originally the sonata was to be performed during a concert in Paris in March 2020, organised by La Nouvelle Athènes. The concert including the planned rehearsals had to be cancelled at short notice.
Subsequently we looked into options of at least scheduling some rehearsals. After initial difficulties we managed to play together simultaneously through the internet, while accepting a delay of the audio signal of around 20 to 25ms – which correlates to an effective distance of approximately 7 to 8m. In the course of this work, and while the pandemic restrictions and lockdowns lasted on, we developed the idea to make this video.
Our performance is inspired by our years long collaboration in research on the interpretation of 19th century music. In the introduction of the video we discuss our approach, the sources and the instruments used.
Recorded simultaneously in the private homes of the performers in Berlin and St. Gallen, connected via the internet and the software JamKazam on 11th June 2020.
Owing to the unique recording situation, the less than ideal recording venues and the limited technical facilities, this recording should be judged according to what it is: an experiment during difficult times.
The performers would like to thank La Nouvelle Athènes for their support.
