China's BYD, the world’s largest producer of electric vehicles, has launched its latest model in Mexico aiming to help more Mexicans bring home their first electric cars. The carmaker is among thousands of Chinese companies investing in the United States’ southern neighbour, joining the likes of e-commerce giants, including Shein and Alibaba – which owns the Post. Washington has responded to such investment with growing concern. Beijing, meanwhile, has been keeping an eye on the November 2024 US presidential election, which could lead much of the conversation related to China’s Mexico ambitions.

A long-simmering dispute between Hong Kong’s traditional taxi industry and the Uber ride-hailing service flared up in May 2024 when a group of “undercover” cabbies tried to report Uber drivers to police for carrying passengers without licences. Uber has been operating in Hong Kong since 2014, but its legal status has long been in question, and taxi industry representatives have regularly called for crackdowns. The Post set out to compare the services and speak with their drivers to understand how they feel about the controversy.

A new Japanese invention claims to help people reduce their salt consumption. The so-called electric spoon works by passing a weak electric charge to the tongue, drawing in the taste of salt, eliminating the need for users to add salt to their food. Japan's new whaling mother ship arrived in Tokyo on May 23, 2024, ahead of its maiden hunting expedition off the nation’s northeast coast. The Kangei Maru will process and store whales caught by a fleet of smaller vessels. Japan's first domestically produced mother ship in over 70 years has faced a wave of criticism. Animal rights activists say that since whales live for a long time and reproduce slowly, they are not sustainable as a food source.

A top Philippine navy official has broken his silence about an alleged phone call he had with a Chinese embassy official. Speaking with lawmakers, Vice-Admiral Alberto Carlos denied accusations he had compromised national security by making a secret deal regarding conduct in the South China Sea. Following weeks of allegations and speculation about whether the phone call even took place, Carlos testified before the Philippine Senate’s defence committee on May 22, 2024. While he denied making any “new deal”, Carlos admitted speaking with a Chinese military attaché about rising tensions over Manila’s resupply missions to its outpost at the Second Thomas Shoal, a disputed maritime feature in the South China Sea.

The Kowloon Walled City in Hong Kong was once considered the densest settlement in the world. The sprawling neighbourhood was often characterised as a lawless enclave with poor living conditions, criminal activity and a thriving black market, trading anything from pirated goods to drugs and sex. It was demolished in 1994, but its legacy lives on through the memories of its former residents. Thirty years after it was torn down, former residents and others who worked there shared some of their most vivid recollections of what was known as the “City of Darkness”.

Japanese authorities have put up a barrier at a popular spot where visitors had flocked to take photos of the country’s famous Mount Fuji. The mesh screen measuring 20 metres by 2.5 metres (65ft by 8ft) as of May 21, 2024, obstructed views of the mountain where the signage for a Lawson convenience store appears to sit just below the mountain. The spot had been an online hit that drew tourists, but locals had complained about visitors who often ignored rules about littering and parking, as well as causing a nuisance and traffic hazards.

Thailand is only one of the five countries in the world to have successfully raised and released newborn leatherback sea turtles back to the wild. The leatherback sea turtle is one of seven sea turtle species facing extinction and it plays a huge role in the marine ecosystem. The Phuket Marine Biological Center (PMBC) aims to protect it by taking care of newborns that typically face low survival rates, and releasing them into the wild once they are ready.

Many people in Hong Kong’s low-income communities have limited options for dental care. The city’s government provides some public facilities offering affordable rates for dental care. However users face a cumbersome registration system that requires patients – many elderly – to queue up for appointment slots that become available at midnight and no more than twice a week. Reforms planned for July 2024 will allow patients to preregister for treatment at 8pm instead of midnight, but critics say the change will only mean that older patients must show up in queues earlier since the quota for available appointments will remain the same.

Research is flourishing into new applications for the marine plant – from carbon absorption to reducing methane emissions from cattle. Other countries are looking to Asia’s seaweed savvy to develop their own industries.

The measure allows recent immigrants to participate in local elections. But the historically marginalised indigenous Kanaks say the change would further dilute their voting bloc. Chinese President Xi Jinping welcomed his “old friend” Vladimir Putin to Beijing on May 16, 2024, at the start of a two-day state visit by the Russian leader. Xi said relations between the two countries have withstood an international “storm and changes” and set a model for mutual respect and cooperation. The Cheung Chau Bun Festival is a traditional event in Hong Kong believed to date back to the 18th or 19th century, when it was first held to celebrate the end of a plague. Also known as the Da Jiu Festival, the focal point of the annual event is a popular race where competitors scramble up a tower covered with buns. Over the years, the festival has seen several disruptions including an accident during one bun-snatching competition, which triggered a 26-year suspension that was only lifted after safety standards were improved.
