Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world’s most-hated audio tools. As a professional music technology clown I have become immune to gear acquisition syndrome, all my purchases are meticulously planned out, based on quantifiable parameters like resale value, repairability and actual utility in music production.
However, today we are going to talk about the 2001 Yamaha DX200, an overpriced contraption notorious for its questionable build quality, sonically surpassed by freeware plugins and riddled with more UI limitations than a Volca. Why did I buy this?

Most Iconic Plugin of all Time
Hey everybody, today we are going to talk about what is probably THE most iconic plugin of all time, an ancient software instrument known even to people who don’t spend all their time in front of FL Studio and - in spite of the fact that it was written by a bunch of students in their dorm room in the early 2000s - had a cultural impact comparable to music industry staples like Serum.

How to make RUMBLES without a Computer
Hey everybody, in this video we are going to create the infamous kick rumbles that defined 21st Century techno without using DAWs like Ableton or spending big bucks on Eurorack.
More often than not techno rumbles are produced inside of a computer because the complex signal chains can be tedious to set up in real life.
Today, however, we are going to simplify this process, explore different options for every budget and try to find out if these hardware alternatives are actually better than their computer-based counterparts.

Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world’s most-h*ted audio tools. Arturia doesn’t get enough credit for creating what is probably THE most relevant analog poly of the 21st Century, the Arturia Polybrute .
Today, however, we are going to talk about its similarly oversized, far less universally acclaimed and much more archaic cousin, the 2017 Matrixbrute WHICH didn't age so well.

I bought an Original 90s Dance Music Setup
Hey everybody, this video is a dream come true as we are going to do something I’ve been wanting to do since I was a broke teenager back in the day: build an Original 90s Dance Music Production Setup including synths, drum machine, recording gear and sequencer.
All the equipment we will be using for making music today was brought to the market before the year 2000 and while you might be longing for the workflows of these seemingly simpler times - be careful what you wish for.
00:00 Introduction
00:33 Why 90s EDM Setups were revolutionary
01:14 THE SYNTHS - Novation Bass Station Rack (1995)
01:46 Doepfer MS-404 (1994) - The Eurorack Predecessor
02:05 Roland JV-1080 (1994) - The ROMpler
02:30 Jomox Airbase 99 (1999) - The Drum Machine
03:09 Roland JX8P (1985) - The Keyboard
03:36 THE SEQUENCER - Alesis MMT-8 (1987)
04:22 THE MIXER - Mackie CR-1604 VLZ (1996)
05:01 THE EFFECTS - Alesis 3630 , Roland Space Echo RE-201 ,...
05:38 THE RECORDER - Fostex D-10 DAT Recorder (1993)
06:12 Your favorite 90s Dance Record might be a DAWless Jam ( Trance Jam )
06:55 THE MULTITRACK RECORDER - Alesis ADAT XT (1996)
07:18 Syncing ADATs to a Sequencer - JLC dataSYNC2 (1997)

Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world’s most-hated audio tools. In light of recent events we are going to talk about OP-1 Field.

Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world’s most-hated audio tools. Although this channel is often associated with enervating noise , my work environment is so calm I can tune a vintage synth to my tinnitus and I stick to low mixing volumes to avoid ear fatigue.

Was this the WORST PURCHASE ever???
A few years back I reviewed what was probably the most underwhelming piece of gear at the time - the original Arturia Drumbrute. This 2016 drum machine seemed like a dream come true: fully analog, great sequencer, one-knob-per-function UI and a design that pleases the eye of normal people and satisfies the basic instincts of synth nerds.
The problem with this instrument: it sounded almost comically bad and might be the only Bad Gear protagonist I didn’t make any real music with.
Although I sent it back after reviewing it, this cursed drum machine kept on haunting me and when I found one on Reverb for the price of a Volca I might have been hovering over the BUY button a little too hard. Was this the worst purchase ever?

Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world’s most-hated audio tools. When taken out of historical context it might currently seem like a bunch of big companies are stealing the ideas of a Swiss/German/Chinese innovator and trying to amateurishly emulate them in digital form to make a quick buck.
Today we are going to talk about Korg multi/poly. This virtual analog synth and Raspberry Pi in disguise asking you politely to take it out of its misery not only looks like an AI-generated picture-to-CAD rendering conversion process gone wrong, it also comes with more features than a marketing blurb can handle.

Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world’s most-hated audio tools. Around 10 years ago a company - that is of course identical to the inMusic-owned Moog brand we know today - released what is probably THE ideal synth keyboard for aging bald guys who really love techno.

Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world’s most-hated audio tools. In times like these when normal people try to steer clear of questionable spending habits, true synth nerds are still stockpiling esoteric Eurorack modules, vintage restoration projects and overpriced VST plugins in a box.
Speaking of which, today we are going to talk about the Waldorf Iridium range. Presets are Good
Hey everybody, in this video we are going to talk about what I personally consider to be the 10 Best Synth Presets of all Time . Presets - for lack of a better word - are good!
Many synthesists pride themselves on their from scratch synth programming skills but today we will shed a light on both, underrated factory content and well-known patches that had a far greater impact on music history than your 10.000 bucks generative Eurorack abomination ever will.

Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world’s most-hated audio tools. Presumably I’m not the only one who made a handful of Native Instruments “backup copies” a core part of his personality back in the zero years so it goes without saying that my mid-forties self is yearning for an overpriced yet tangible take on these plugins for the sole purpose of reminding me of a time when all it needed was sleep deprivation and a PC from Aldi.
However, all we got was Maschine+. This 2020 standalone version of NIs software MPC ripoff ecosystem offers DAWless access to a small selection of these now-iconic plugins, it boasts the processing power of the aforementioned Aldi PC and will disappoint you with more broken promises when it comes to major updates than the GTA franchise.

Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world’s most-hated audio tools. Instruments featured on this show usually come with at least one of the following three characteristics: corny sounds that didn’t age so well, a super nerdy concept people who actually have a life wouldn’t even try to comprehend and an impenetrable UI gatekeeping the sonic goodness.
Today we are going to talk about Korg’s iconic Wavestations. These early 90s wave sequencing synths are undisputed top performers in each of the aforementioned categories and while the standard versions already require a certain willingness to suffer I - a trained professional - upped the difficulty level a bit and opted for the Dark Souls-like SR edition. Don’t try this at home or at all!

Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world’s most-hate audio tools. While we, the aging population of hardware synth land, can only be awakened from our arthritic slumber by Swedish lifestyle product rage bait or the announcement of too-big-to-fail analog flagships, the flourishing software synth demographic just had a Steve Jobs keynote-like moment.

Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world’s most-hated audio tools. Frequent viewers of this channel are well-aware of the fact that I - personally - love all gear, that this show is merely a reflection on the hate of others and that even some of my favorite electronic musical instruments aren’t safe from the relentless ridicule of the Bad Gear treatment.
Today we are going to talk about Jomox MBase. This synthesizer with a strong focus on the nether regions of the percussive backbone of an arrangement is not only an integral part of my sonic arsenal - most of the criticism is also well-deserved.

Music Production Gear that is still TOO CHEAP!!!
In this video we are going to talk about music production gear that is still too cheap. There has been a lot of social media drama about a music technology company ripoff or scam so I thought it is about time to put a focus on synths , grooveboxes and drum machines that are - in my opinion - seriously undervalued.
Most of the products we are taking a look at today have been discontinued so the main metric will be used prices on Reverb but some of these electronic music instruments are still available new for astonishingly affordable prices.

Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world’s most-hated audio tools. There are countless reasons to get a synth created by the one and only Dave Smith: the gravitas of early Prophets, the mind-boggling sound design potential of the Evolver or the intuitive UI concept of vector synthesis in general - just to name a few.

Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world’s most-hated audio tools. Back in the day when synth nerds had to walk 10 miles in the snow uphill both ways to get wasted and find a place for music production the term game changer had a completely different meaning.
Today we are going to talk about the very first E-mu Proteus. This 80s synth and dumbed-down offspring of the Emulator sampler range not only made their iconic tones more accessible, its presets also burned themselves into the global pop cultural consciousness.

Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world’s most-hated audio tools. If sound synthesis in general was a family, granular synthesis would be the basement-dwelling and terminally online distant music producer cousin who listens to the sounds of humpback whales and lives off a diet of - depending on the moon phase - stone age keto or vegan MREs.
Today we are going to talk about Liven Texture Lab. This 2023 Sonicware synth and sibling of the Sonicware Liven Ambient takes granular synthesizer out of its natural software synthesizer habitat, its UI is devoid of any proper visual cues to make the technique somewhat controllable for music production and comes with two goldfish brains of sample memory.

Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world’s most-hated audio tools. Senior synth citizens like me might get the impression that the technical evolution is going backwards: the mass market returned to the dark ages of analog, there’s an obvious disconnect between traditional manufacturers and their customers and sampling hardware is slowly reapproaching the tech specs of 1991.

Today we are going to talk about the SH-32. This unholy offspring of a JP-8000 and an MC-303, 2002 not-a- synth -not-yet-a- groovebox and Buchla Easel for kids design abomination is not only peak Roland Music but also seems to be the blueprint for the Roland SH-4D .

Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world’s most-hated audio tools. Every now and then this show needs some blasphemy, a little slap in the face of iconic music history milestones and one of these “he’s obviously trolling” moments true Bad Gear fans crave at least once a year.
Today we are going to talk about the legendary D-50. This LA synth and Roland’s answer to the Yamaha DX7 not only had a huge impact on the sound aesthetics of the late 80s, it is also still relevant for Enya Orinoco Flow Covers, creating high end General Midi Kontakt Libraries, channeling your Reagan Era soap opera PTSD AND I might have a point here…

Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world’s most-hated audio tools. We all know that Roland doesn’t chase ghosts but like every big company they chase something completely different.
Today we are going to talk about Roland Cloud. This “Matrix” among software instrument ecosystems was rolled out in 2018, based on the already controversial Content Store and turned the usual UX nightmare of modern internet into something even true Roland fans might consider to be more more despicable than “he who must not be named”. Korg Volca Sample 2
Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world’s most-hated audio tools. Volcas are awesome: the original meme synths that kicked off an ongoing trend of miniaturization in music technology and turned countless promising musicians into irredeemable gear addicts.
However, everything must come to an end, so today we are going to talk about Volca Sample New Generation. You might be surprised that my original Volca Sampler - although prominently featured on this channel - never actually received the Bad Gear treatment, that this is the very last member of the existing Volca family to be reviewed here and let’s discuss why I don’t think there’s ever going to be another Volca as we know it.

Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world’s most-hated audio tools. Sequel to iconic movies tend to have a bad reputation - which is not always fair. Who doesn’t like stone cold classic like Jaws II or Space Jam - A New Legacy and Aliens Vs. Predator: Requiem is a guilty pleasure of mine for a reason.
Today we are going to talk about Microkorg II . This direct-to-Bad Gear synthesizer and successor to the OG hipster keyboard comes with all the features that made the original so great like minikeys and a front panel real estate-hogging genre selector and combines them with the blessings of gamification . Masterpiece!

Roland MC-202 - The Original Boutique
Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world’s most-hated audio tools. Roland is inarguably the greatest synth brand in history but even die-hard fans like me have a hard time dealing with the miniscule displays, buzz-killing menu diving and product philosophies that seem like they were conceived after a 72h non-stop bender.
Today we are going to talk about the MC-202. This 80s analog synth and sequencer not only might as well be the secret lovechild of an SH101 and TB303, it also appears to be the root of all the aforementioned evil.

Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world’s most-hated audio tools. Synth nerds shopping for gear will come across plenty of options that seem a little overpriced: generic raspberry pis in plastic enclosures, iconic instruments going for around 50% of the repair cost needed to keep them up and running for the next 5 years and the usual Reverb madness raising the blood pressure of GAS victims all around the globe.
Today we are going to talk about PO-33. While this 2018 lofi sampler, microscopic groovebox and indispensable salted caramel latte chaser is both affordable AND powerful, it might be part of Teenage Engineering’s most perfidious strategy to go EP-133 medieval on your wallet.

Hey everybody, today we are going to talk about truly exceptional gear . In the comment sections of that other show that I have I get asked a lot if there is any gear that I actually like and yes, even in my life there is this one piece of musical equipment I wouldn’t sell even if things got really, really tough.
The machine in question is my trusty old Roland Space Echo RE201 . Not only because it is a Space Echo and Space Echoes are - of course - totally awesome, but also because it is a piece of family history .

Happy Halloween - in this video I’m going to react to what can be considered an avalanche of memes about this show that was created by the great people of the Synth Memes! group over at Facebook. While I usually try to keep this channel as family-friendly as possible some of these memes might be considered mildly offensive depending on how much time you spend on online cesspools like the aforementioned Meta platform - so without any further trigger warnings - let’s get right to it!

Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world’s most-hated audio tools. For me, an Ableton Live user since version 2, Ableton can’t do no wrong - not that their products are so great but my deep-fried meme video brain has just become too used to hand-drawing midi notes in an Excel style grid while clipping the master and conjuring CPU peaks with a janky Max4Live patch.
Today we are going to talk about Ableton Move. While previous Bad Gear-worthy Ableton hardware didn’t really tickle my fancy, this brand-new 2022 ableton move leak incarnate, unholy lovechild of the iOS app ableton note and ableton Push 3 sawed in half and “Mom, can we have Novation Circuit - there is novation Circuit tracks at home” hipster toy and groovebox with akai MPC pads was an instabuy for me.

Bad Gear - The Beginner
Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world’s most-hated audio tools. People go DAWless for a reason: swap out the mind-numbing computer screens for the luxury of a pocket calculator display, embrace the limitations of whatever crappy CPU was cheapest during the kickstarter campaign and never get ripped off by Spotify because nobody will listen to your bleeps and bloops anyway.
Today we are going to talk about Circuit Tracks. This 2021 groovebox and barely upgraded successor to the OG Novation Circuit took this philosophy to the extremes: gateway drug price tag, completely screenless UI and a workflow so minimalist it perfectly fits the lifestyle of a generation that will never be able to afford a home.

Bad Gear | KingKorg Neo
Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world’s most-hated audio tools. Over the last 30 years Korg has released many iconic products worthy of a reissue: a Prophecy operable without a quantum physics degree, a new Kaoss Pad that actually works and maybe even an Electribe that deserves the name.
However, for reasons completely beyond my comprehension we need to talk about KingKorg Neo. This brand new virtual analog synth is basically identical to a more or less forgotten 2013 Korg instrument by the same name without the Matrix reference and is - just like its predecessor - a prime example for how to mess up both product launch timing and pricing strategy.

Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world’s most-hated audio tools. In spite of my limitless love for Roland in general, my efforts to turn even their most controversial gear into a sought-after classic and the fact that I was prophetically advertising their instruments months before the actual product announcement, our favorite synth brand didn’t send me their new Aira Compact P-6.
However, today we are going to talk about the Korg ES-1. Putting this creative sampler from the year 2000 on the show is not only my personal way of coping with the unfathomable disappointment, the two instruments are - a few modern bells and whistles aside - suspiciously similar.
Bad Gear - NOT the P-6!!!

The TRUTH about Bad Gear
I found this conspiracy theory on Reddit - Sun Tsu
Music Used: Cjbeards - Fire and Thunder
Song Link: youtube.com/watch?v=82hJffyJ5hY
This text was taken from:
reddit.com/r/synthesizercirclejerk/comments/168ij2l/bad_gear_is_a_psyops_by_big_synth_and_florian
Disclaimer: The entire text is a truckload of horse dung, it clearly is of satirical nature and please FOR THE LOVE OF MOOG don't take it seriously.
Or is it???
Bad Gear is a Psy-Ops by Big Synth, and Florian Pilz is a plant
Hear me out
we've all been there, right? Lusting after that shiny new synth, thinking it's going to be the answer to all our musical woes. But have you ever stopped to think... why? Why do we feel this insatiable need to acquire more and more gear? The answer is simple: Big Synth.
Big Synth, the shadowy conglomerate of synthesizer manufacturers with Uli Behringer as their leader, has been playing us for fools. They've been conducting covert psy-ops on the unsuspecting synth community for years. And the worst part? They've planted their agent right under our noses: Florian Pilz.
Now, I know what you're thinking: "Florian?". Yes, Florian. It's all been a ruse. Every meme, every ironic post, every "early-pop dreamy radio-wave brostep from an beach near you" jam – it's all been carefully orchestrated by Big Synth to brainwash us into emptying our wallets. This textbook MK ultra operation ticks all of the CIA mind-programming boxes.
Think about it. Every time you see an episode, what's your first thought? "Man, I really need a new synth." Coincidence? I think not. It's meme warfare, my friends. A subtle, insidious campaign to make us believe that our self-worth is tied to the number of synths we own.
And let's not even get started on the "bad gear" narrative. Big Synth wants us to believe that our current gear is never good enough. That there's always something better, shinier, more expensive out there. It's a never-ending cycle of Gear Acquisition Syndrome that keeps us perpetually unsatisfied and perpetually spending. I'm on my 10th Hydrasynth and there is no signs of stopping.
So, the next time you feel that itch to buy a new synth, remember: it's not you, it's them. Big Synth and their meme warrior, Florian Pilz, are pulling the strings.
Stay woke, synth fam. Stay woke.

Bad Gear - Analog Rytm
Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world’s most-hated audio tools. Given the amount of screen time Elektron gear gets on this channel one might be surprised that all of this belonged to their simple, easily accessible and super affordable line of beginner products.
Today we are going to talk about Analog Rytm MKII. This 2018 analog drum machine is the very first top of the line Elektron instrument to be featured on this show and while it comes with plenty of pro features for music production my humble Digitakt is missing the controversy surrounding it is basically the same.

Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world’s most-hated audio tools. Old people like me keep yelling at clouds that music production has become too easy: MPC s are DAW s in a box now, even if you suck at making beats, Splice got you covered and AI is capable of creating better tracks than me.
Today we are going to talk about the Boss SP-303. This iconic drum sampler from the year 2001 is the exact opposite of all these modern shenanigans: the OG Lo-Fi sound, about as much polyphony as a Mongolian throat singer and a workflow that feels like setting the skill level of Doom to Ultra Nightmare.

Classic Synths for FREE???
The Usual Suspects OsTIrus
Be aware that the firmwares needed for these emulations might be protected by law so please educate yourself on the legal situation before you try it out.
This video is for educational and entertainment purposes only. I have no intention to encourage any illegal activity.
In this meme video we are going to talk about how easy it has become to get access to classic synthesizers like the entire Virus range or Waldorf Micro Q. Keep in mind that these are not some half-baked imitations of the iconic virtual analog synths but almost 100% authentic recreations that are available free of charge to be run inside your DAW. We will take a look at whether all these claims are true, compare it to one of the more recent original instruments and try to find out if all this might even be illegal.
