Though Shapiro has a high favorability rating in his state and among those supporting his VP nomination, he also faces notable criticism.
Shapiro has been opposed to Palestinian protests against Israel, and his office has come under fire for the handling of a sexual harassment investigation involving one of his longtime aides.

The Israeli military said Tuesday it carried out a strike on Beirut targeting the militant commander allegedly behind the deaths of 12 children and teens in a rocket attack on the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights over the weekend.
Israel has blamed the rocket attack on the Hezbollah militant group, which has denied any role in the attack.
A Hezbollah official and the group’s TV station said that an Israeli airstrike hit Hezbollah’s stronghold south of Beirut on Tuesday evening, causing damage.

The postponement comes following assurances that the Seine River would be safe for participants.
The men's triathlon event is now scheduled for Wednesday. The women's triathlon event, which was already scheduled for Wednesday, is still slated to occur.
Aurélie Merle, executive director of Sports for Paris 2024, told reporters that the decision was made after conducting four river tests and finding that three of the tests indicated unsafe pollution levels. She suggested that rain from July 26 and 27 caused poor water quality in the Seine.

The Park Fire, which officials said was caused by arson, has burned nearly 370,000 acres across Butte, Plumas, Shasta and Tehama counties — an area that is roughly half the size of the state of Rhode Island.
The fire prompted evacuations of over 3,500 residents and a response from over 4,800 fire personnel with hundreds of fire engines. The latest information from CalFire indicated that 100 homes and structures have been destroyed since the fire began on Wednesday, but no fatalities have been reported.
CalFire officials said the Park Fire is now the sixth-largest in the state's history, but that ranking could change before it's completely extinguished.

Israel claims the militant group Hezbollah is behind Saturday's attack, though they have denied involvement. The strike is the deadliest attack on Israeli civilians since the Hamas invasion back in early October.
This comes just days after Netanyahu traveled to Washington, DC, to speak with Congress, President Biden, Vice President Harris, and former President Trump.

In an op-ed published Monday morning, President Biden outlined the three-pronged proposal that he called a means to "restore trust and accountability" in America's democratic institutions. It includes the following:
- Justices to be nominated by the sitting president every two years to serve an 18-year term on the Supreme Court
- Congress to pass legislation that requires justices to disclose gifts, refrain from political involvement, and recuse themselves from cases in which they or their spouses have a conflict of interest
- A constitutional amendment stating that any current or former presidents are not immune from federal prosecution for any crimes committed while in office.

In this Scripps News Reports special, we investigate a quiet but widespread problem that tens of millions of Americans face: Caring for a loved one while being unable to completely care for themselves.
About 53 million Americans are caregivers, and the count is growing as the population ages. Caregivers are largely unpaid, but still contribute roughly $600 billion annually across 36 billion hours of care.
These people are often faceless and nameless in the grand scheme, except to those friends and loved ones they're caring for.
Scripps News sits down with some of them — who might already be familiar faces to you — to hear their stories about caring for family, struggling with finances and working to change the policies that affect millions of people like them every day.

In this special report, Scripps News speaks with athletes, experts and our correspondents worldwide to focus on the money behind the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
We pull back the curtain on how much cities pay to host the Games and the price for athletes to represent their country, investigate the bidding process that goes into hosting the games and explore the costs of building specialized competition venues and mass transit to handle a huge audience.
Economists explain the history of Olympic Games going over budget, we dig into what it costs for athletes to win, and how much they can win if they make it to the podium. And we hear from athletes themselves about working second jobs so they can chase their dreams of Olympic gold.

His comments come after reports have suggested he could exit the race and endorse former President Donald Trump. "I never intended to get out of the campaign. That's just fake news," Kennedy said.
He added, "I have no plans to endorse any other candidate. I'm in it to win it. Our donations are way up, our social engagement up a thousand percent since President Biden dropped out. Our volunteers are up, our email engagement is up. We have tremendous momentum right now and we intend to win this campaign," Kennedy told Scripps News.
When asked whether there was anything that could cause him to endorse Trump, Kennedy said, "Not that I can think of."
When pressed about his conversations with Trump, Kennedy repeated that he would not detail private conversations.

The new guidelines say educators should only look at the Bible's “historical literary and secular benefits by highlighting the influence on Western civilization.”
They stipulate that the Bible is "not to be used for religious purposes such as preaching or indoctrination." The Oklahoma Education Association has criticized this mandate, saying it forces teachers into a position that potentially violates the constitution.

In a statement Friday, the Obamas said they "couldn’t be more excited for her -- or more thrilled to endorse" the vice president.
"There is no doubt in our mind that Kamala Harris has exactly what it takes to win this election and deliver for the American people," a statement from the Obamas says.
After the Democratic Party essentially united behind Harris following President Joe Biden's decision to drop out of the 2024 race, there had been a lot of questions about when the Obamas would endorse the vice president. Scripps News reported on Thursday that the endorsement was expected "soon," and Mr. Obama and Harris had been in regular touch with each other.

"We are in an elevated threat environment, and we have been for some time, and that comes from a variety of quarters," Wray said. "It is, it is, quite frankly, a dangerous time to be a prominent public official."
The data is overwhelming. Since 2016, threats against members of Congress and federal judges have increased by 700% and 160% respectively. Additionally, one in five local elected officials report threats every three months. And according to a Reuters report, 213 cases of political violence since the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol marks the "biggest and most sustained increase in political violence" in 50 years.

Candidates who have declared their intent to run will also have to get signatures from at least 300 of the DNC's delegates nationwide, with no more than 50 of them coming from a single state. The deadline to collect signatures is July 30.
If more than one candidate qualifies under those rules, the DNC will allow up to five days for candidates to speak to the public about their campaign, then hold a virtual vote to legally nominate their candidate on August 7. If only one candidate qualifies, the virtual vote will take place on August 1.
A candidate needs to win a simple majority of delegates to get the DNC's nomination.

The move was made possible by a recent Supreme Court ruling that gives governments the authority to remove people from homeless camps, an issue that impacts California more than any other state.
The effort will require that state agencies not just clear out the encampments, but also work with local governments to find housing for people who need it.

During a hearing before the House Judiciary Committee Wednesday, Wray said a forensic analysis of the shooter's laptop revealed that he Google searched, "How far away was Oswald from Kennedy” a few days before the shooting.
Wray added that the shooter appears to have registered for the Trump event on the same day as the search. While a motive has not been established, Wray said this information is "significant" to show the shooter's state of mind. He added that the shooter was “interested in public figures,” and around the time of July 6, he became focused on the rally and the former president.

Netanyahu hopes his speech bolsters U.S. support for Israel as it continues to combat Hamas, Hezbollah and other Iranian-backed militants in the Middle East.
"America and Israel must stand together," Netanyahu said. "Because when we stand together, something very simple happens. We win, they lose! And my friends, I came to assure you today of one thing, we will win!"
While numerous Democrats were in the chamber for the speech, including House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, some boycotted, concerned with the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Outside of the Capitol, groups of demonstrators gathered to protest the Israeli prime minister's appearance. Minutes before Netanyahu began speaking, Capitol police said part of the crowd had become violent.

The outage, which disrupted systems ranging from travel, banking and other industries, was caused by a failed software update to computers using Microsoft operating systems. While other airlines have largely recovered from Friday's outage, Delta has struggled to resume normal service.
According to travel tracker FlightAware, 30% of Delta flights were canceled on Monday, in addition to 46% that were delayed. American Airlines and United Airlines only had about 2% of its flights canceled on Monday, FlightAware said.
Additionally, 12% of Delta flights were canceled for Tuesday, as of 9 a.m. ET, with the list continuing to grow.
