JScope is on TRAFFIC JAMS CKUARadio 2024-03-13 | Oyedamola Folajin is a Nigerian-born musician, who records and performs as J Scope. Sixteen years ago he moved to Ukraine to study mining engineering. During his time there, J Scope was also able to pursue his passion for music.He went on to become a quarter finalist in the competition for Ukraine’s entry into the Eurovision Song Contest and has collaborated with many artists in the country’s hip hop scene. Now based in Edmonton, J Scope is making a name for himself in Alberta’s hip hop and R&B community. Hidden Track: Sunny War | Punk Rock is a Gateway Drug CKUARadio 2024-03-06 | She's truly a study in contrasts – right from her chosen moniker, Sunny War. Her story is an utterly extraordinary one, in terms of both her brilliant musical arc and her often-tumultuous life journey. She spent much of her teens and early 20s as an itinerant busker, living where she could, sometimes hopping trains around the States, experiencing trouble with the law, and battling drug and alcohol addiction. All along, Sunny War's lone constant companion – her true lifeline – has been her guitar. The folk/ punk/ gospel/ blues artist was born Sydney Ward into a musical family in Nashville, steeped in rock, folk, and classical music, and started playing guitar as a child. Moving to L.A., she discovered punk rock in her early teens, which led her to a true DIY musical apprenticeship busking on the streets of Venice Beach. It was there that she began to develop her unique artistic voice, one that utterly transcends genre and era. She cites the influence of everyone from 1930s blues greats like Robert Johnson and Skip James, to 1980s reggae/punk firebrands Bad Brains and current experimental rap artist JPEGMafia. Her 2022 album Anarchist Gospel was mainly written in the wake of a devastating breakup, in the loneliest depths of the pandemic, just before she decided to pull up stakes and move back to Tennessee. There, she made this album with producer Adrija Tokic (who has worked on albums by folks like Alabama Shakes and Hurray for the Riff Raff) and with collaborators like roots music heavyweights Allison Russell and David Rawlings. Anarchist Gospel draws on the sense of duality that's at the heart of her work – these are heart-rending songs about romantic pain, family strife, and doomy environmental woes, yet the album overall is somehow strangely uplifting. We hear that in the songs she shares with us in this episode of Hidden Track: "New Day", "Whole", and "No Reason". She performed them solo in a breathtakingly intimate session, as she travelled through Alberta playing a pair of wintertime music festivals. Travelling solo, of course! Francesco Ventriglia on TRAFFIC JAMS CKUARadio 2024-03-06 | The Brothers Grimm fairy tale Hansel and Gretel has captivated people for more than 200 years. The story of two sweet-toothed siblings, abandoned in the woods and lured to a candy cottage by an evil witch, has been adapted for film, television, theatre, opera, and ballet.In 2019, the Royal New Zealand Ballet premiered its version of the classic tale, choreographed by Loughlan Prior with music by Claire Cowan, the first woman in the history of the company to compose a full-length ballet score. The costumes were designed by Kate Hawley, who has created costumes for such films as The Hobbit, Suicide Squad and Pacific Rim.The production became a critical and commercial success. ALBERTA MORNING Eric Janviers Heartbeat of a Nation CKUARadio 2024-02-15 | Screening on February 17 at the historic Bailey Theatre in Camrose is a 20-minute National Film Board documentary called Heartbeat of a Nation, made by Alberta filmmaker Eric Janvier. Eric will also be one of the filmmakers on hand at the Nordlys Film and Arts Festival, which goes February 16th-18th, 2024. The film features three members of Eric's family – representing three generations – and is shot in the beautiful, traditional lands of the Chipewyan Prairie Dene First Nation.It chronicles the process of making of a drum, beginning with the immersion of a hide in the river, and following the handmade construction all the way through to the performance of a Grandfather Honour Song at the end. TRAFFIC JAMS ICAI artist of the month Bariyaa Ipaa CKUARadio 2024-02-14 | Bariyaa Ipaa is Nigerian-Canadian multi-disciplinary artist based in Lethbridge. His main form of artistic expression is photography, with his photos largely focusing on everyday life. Bariyaa's work is also informed by his lived experiences as a first generation Canadian. In addition to his work as an artist and Outreach Coordinator for the Southern Alberta Art Gallery, Bariyaa also helped spearhead the We’re Here Too Project, which celebrates the work of Black Creatives and documents the Black experience in Lethbridge. He is the first featured artist of the recently relaunched Immigrant Council for Arts Innovation’s Artist of the Month program. On Tuesday, February 13, Bariyaa joins CKUA's Lisa Wilton on Traffic Jams to discuss his artistic journey and his varied work within the Lethbridge artistic community. Plenty of tarps. The multimedia exhibition Jiā yóu! features the creations of Alberta artist Kev Liang, in which he makes innovative use of digital media and print media, alongside a series of 3-D objects which are juxtaposed in compelling, thought-provoking ways. On now until March 9, 2024 at The New Gallery in Calgary, this new solo exhibition finds Liang exploring traditional objects and symbols of his Chinese heritage – in dialogue with layers of synthetic materials (namely, those aforementioned tarps). Liang's work deals with important questions – questions surrounding his current life as an urban dweller, as well as what he calls his "queer, diasporic 2nd-gen Chinese-Canadian identity. Featuring performances by a diverse range of Black musicians and poets, Joyful Noise is part of the series of annual events presented by Edmonton organization 5 Artists 1 Love, which also includes a sprawling art exhibition at the Art Gallery of Alberta. This year's Winspear concert lineup reaches across many different musical genres, and includes performances by noted Edmonton-area musical artists like Melafrique, Nigel Williams, Oozeela, and Biboye Onanuga, with both Omar Farah and Medgine performing their poetry. Medgine joined Grant Stovel on Alberta Morning to discuss how her upbringing in English, French, and Haitian Creole fostered a love of language, the way she uses her poetry to elucidate her journey of resilience as a Black Canadian woman, and her new debut multilingual chapbook, Waiting in the land of the living (Attendre dans le monde des vivants).
