The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations makes a compelling case that insects are key to our future food security. Insects are chock-full of protein, good fats, calcium, iron, and zinc — making them viable alternatives to chicken, pig, and cow meat. Bugs are also much easier on the environment.
Much of the world has already discovered this. Eighty percent of nations, from Southeast Asia to Latin America, already consume more than 1,900 different insect species. Fried locusts and grasshoppers, for example, are extremely popular street foods in Thailand. The Western world has been the only holdout, but that is perhaps starting to change.
Restaurants in New York and other major cities are featuring items such as grasshopper tacos. Meanwhile, Tiny Farms, Bitty Foods, and Don Bugito are three startups in San Francisco betting on bugs. Tiny Farms offers open-source farm kits encouraging individuals and businesses to raise their own insects, Bitty Foods makes baked goods using flour made of ground-up crickets, and Don Bugito sells flavorful cooked insects in snack-size packages.
These startups are leading the way in putting insects on your plate

Snapchat's response: Not clear on what the context is around [Mark Cuban's statement], but when we say it's "deletion by default" it is because it's closer to regular conversations. You can always record a conversation, but ordinarily you wouldn't. Snapchat is more about the social norms and expectation than secrecy.

The upcoming "Star Wars Battlefront" wants to enable both of these fantasies – and many, many more. The game's developers at Electronic Arts-owned DICE in Stockholm, Sweden are going deep on fan service with "Battlefront," even taking the time to carefully capture all of the aging models of the original trilogy's most iconic components: the original Lightsaber, the Death Star, the X-Wing, and much more.

What Mario did for 2D game design, "Doom" did for first-person: without "Doom," there may never have been blockbusters like "Halo" and "Call of Duty," to say nothing of the dozens of other wildly popular first-person games. There were next to no games made previous to "Doom" with first-person in mind, and it made you – the player – the character in the game. Instead of controlling Mario or Link or Guybrush Threepwood, you were the marine stuck in some form of Hell on Earth.
Also like the influence of Mario, "Doom" was far more than just what it appeared to be.
Yes, you're shooting demons from a first-person perspective, but it also showcased the importance of level design in first-person. There was no straight line from point-to-point with video exposition in between ("cutscenes") – the very first level in "Doom" is a notorious horseshoe, encouraging exploration over immediate gratification.

If you're "in" the game, you don't want to interact with the world by pushing buttons on a game controller. You want to reach out and touch the world, to push and grab and punch and whatever else you'd do if you were there in real life. And that's where motion controls come in.
Sony's got a set of wand-like controllers called PlayStation Move. HTC and Valve have a similar solution. And Facebook's Oculus VR unveiled its own solution during a San Francisco press event last Friday, dubbed "Oculus Touch."

Somewhere in Japan, a small team of acclaimed video game developers was reconvening after a two year hiatus. The goal was simple: to create a third game, as emotionally impactful and precedent-setting as the first two. They had colossal expectations to fill. A simple goal, perhaps, but a deeply challenging one.

Like "Minecraft" before it, "No Man's Sky" is a game about exploration. Also like "Minecraft," "No Man's Sky" is infinite. It's a game played from the first-person perspective, where you're given a universe to explore with little more than a basic spaceship and a limited jetpack. Over time, through exploration and discovery, you'll accrue enough resources to allow you to travel further, explore more, and make a bigger mark on the vastness of "No Man's Sky."
In the video above, game director Sean Murray of Hello Games describes what you'll do in the infinite reaches of "No Man's Sky," and how no two people will experience the same game.

As seen above, we spent Tuesday morning putting the consumer version of the Oculus Rift through its paces at the E3 conference in Los Angeles. We tended goal as a hockey player; we explored 1930s Antarctica in "Edge of Nowhere;" we explored the futuristic environment known as "Oculus Home."
If you're still skeptical about virtual reality, or worried that what you've seen so far isn't up to the quality level you expected, the first consumer version of Oculus Rift should more than convince you. The "screen door effect" that's often spoken of in reference to VR headsets is nigh imperceptible in the consumer version of the Rift, and worries over "jutter" and blur are unfounded: the consumer version of the Rift is crisp, comfortable, and relentlessly immersive.
Seeing is believing, of course, and the best we can do in that respect is the video above.

All your old Xbox 360 games, on disc and downloaded, are going to work on Xbox One. Pretty big news!
And it took a feat of engineering to make it happen. Microsoft's head of Xbox Phil Spencer took the reins of his current job just over one year ago. Spencer told Business Insider that one of the first things he did after taking the job was to speak with the engineering team about making backwards compatibility a reality.
"There's some real technical challenges to be had. We didn't know that it was gonna work," Spencer said. The issue is one of system architecture: the Xbox 360 was based on "PowerPC" architecture, while the Xbox One is based on "x86." The long and short is that the software underpinnings of each console is dramatically different, making it impossible to run the same games from console to console.
So, how to fix such an issue? Create a fake, software-based version of the Xbox 360 operating system that could be run on the Xbox One. "We are running the Xbox 360 operating system, and you can think of it like a virtual machine, on the Xbox one. The games that you're playing have to be wrapped as an Xbox One game," Spencer said.
Put simply: the Xbox One is getting an Xbox 360, through the magic of software. That's pretty incredible! A team at Microsoft took the physical Xbox 360 and created a virtual version of it through software alone. That's Moore's Law in action.
Beyond adding value to the Xbox One, the move is part of a bigger picture push from Spencer and co. toward making games available across a variety of different platforms – all within the Xbox and Windows ecosystem, of course.
Our long term vision is we want you to be able to play the games that you own where you want to play them, whether it's on an Oculus headset or on your TV. The ubiquitous flow of your content from screen to screen is pretty important to us in the long run.
Backwards compatibility is already available for a limited list of games to Xbox One owners who are in the console's "preview program," and will otherwise light up for everyone else some time this fall with at least 100 titles supported initially. Xbox is promising "hundreds" more titles each month, though don't expect your favorite Kinect games to get supported anytime soon – due to differences in how the new version of Kinect differs from the Xbox 360 version, those games simply won't work on Xbox One.

From Apple:
With the new MacBook, we set out to do the impossible: engineer a full-size experience into the lightest and most compact Mac notebook ever. That meant reimagining every element to make it not only lighter and thinner but also better. The result is more than just a new notebook. It’s the future of the notebook.

We used multiple regression analysis to answer this question. We looked at all the 4K TVs for sale on the Best Buy website at the end of February 2015. Excluding the three high-end sets that cost over $20k each, we were left with 46 televisions to analyze. After playing around a bit we found that the following three factors can explain 89% of the dispersion in prices:
Size: The relationship between price and size is not linear. As size increases, so does the marginal cost of each additional inch. We took the diagonal size in inches to the 5th power to get the best fit.
Curve: This is a binary variable. We used 1 for curved TVs and 0 for regular sets.
3D: This is another binary variable. We used 1 for 3D capable TVs and 0 for non-3D. This factor carried quite a bit of weight. Some of the cost attributed to this feature may be due to the fact that 3D capable TVs are most likely newer models.
Armed with a little regression analysis you should have no problem picking out the perfect 4K TV.

The site is both construction site and public museum; President Obama was among the visitors this year. Hedwig Heinsman, co-founder of DUS architects, the team behind the project, tells Business Insider that in addition to being ec0-friendly, "The main goal, I think, is really to deliver custom-made architecture."
3D printers build structures layer by layer. But at USC in California, Professor Behrokh Khoshnevis is pushing the fabrication process one step further with what he calls "contour crafting." He hopes to develop a gigantic 3D printer, able to print whole house in a single run, from its structure to its electrical and plumbing conduits.
The revolution in 3D printed housing, in other words, is well underway.

Drone videos are already changing the way we see things.
"I think that drones are the most amazing innovation that cinema has seen since probably the Steadicam," director and photographer Randy Scott Slavin tells Business Insider.
While many people look at drones as a loud and expensive hobby, professional filmmakers like Slavin are using their drones to capture video from a unique perspective. After his aerial footage of New York City went viral, Slavin was inspired to launch the New York City Drone Film Festival, to celebrate the stunning works of countless other drone videographers.
"This is not a hobby anymore. This is a profession," Parker Gyokeres of Propellerheads Aerial Photography tells us. "This is a professional skill set that has taken us years to develop."
