It's been a while since I last posted a run for this hidden gem, and this time it's on official hardware! The first thing i wanna get into real quick would be that a legendary runner by the name of SuperTobalMan taught me an RNG manipulation for the first dungeon. By utilizing this, the first dungeon's potion colors are fixed. If I find a certain color I'll know without identifying it in-game exactly what its effect is. On top of that, I've greatly improved at combat and understanding the mechanics including potion mixing, which did come in handy a bit in this particular run even in the final dungeon! All the new things i've learned helped me to cut my PB down by nearly half.
I limited grinding attack and defense in this run compared to my previous personal bests. I did not grind at all in the main dungeons and only upped defense a bit in the first few floors of the final dungeon.
Anyhoo, I worked really hard for 2 months straight of not finishing a run at all to finally get one completed that I'm satisfied with. This is not the end of Tobal 2 for me and i'll be more motivated to come back often now that i'm comfortable running it.. while also dealing with Japanese text. Thanks so much for watching and reading this, and I hope you enjoy this run. I find it to be a real treat. twitch.tv/aerlien is where this happens
Muteki - Invincible: Makes the user completely impervious to damage and hitstun Tetsujin - Unblockable: The user's attacks cannot be blocked. Invisible: When the user's model is blank, fights cannot be started and they may cook food and potions by using enemy fire. (Invis is the most important potion in the run) Double - X2: Effects subsequent to using this potion either last twice as long or become twice as effective Hyper: Cooldown after doing a standing attack is negated. White Potion - Uncurse: Bad Gems are cursed, meaning they are impossible to remove once equipped. By combining potions based on their RGB values, you can create a white potion to lift the curse on the bad gems. This also comes with a randomly generated potion effect.
Red Gems: Offense ( 脚力の石 ) Leg Strength Green Gem: Life Max Transparent Green Gem: Extra Life Gem Yellow Gem: Stamina Max Blue Gem: Defense Purple Gem: Captures injured enemies
Throughout the run it's optimal to build the strongest Leg, or Kick gem since the best attacks for characters are often used with the left leg. On the flip side, I also build the worst Life Gems so that I may throw them at bosses, forcing the enemies to equip the gems and be 1 shot or close to it as a result.
Eating food while your stamina bar is maxed out will grant you defense experience. I used it as a safety strat since I wanted to ensure a PB.
Every time you strike an enemy with a limb, that limb gains experience. I mentioned the left leg in particular earlier and that is the one I almost exclusively hit enemies with for this reason.
Shops - Buying: You can tell what kind of potion is on sale by the price and of course if they match any that are in your inventory. Food can help you stay alive, Green Jelly restores health as well Shops - Selling: Defense gems sell for a whopping 500 mol, enough for an invis and 2 doubles. You can appraise unknown gems you have by attempting to sell them and canceling. The price increases or decreases by 10% of a gem's respective base price for each positive or negative level that is on the unknown gem.
Small Helm, Psycho Hom, and Green Man: These three are the only sources of Extra Life Gems in the run. The former 2 have a chance of dropping them upon defeat but Green Man's is equipped, thus must be defeated via capture gem to acquire it. This is because a Life Gem cannot be equipped unless you dump your entire health bar into it. If you die after this then the gem is consumed and you get that lifebar back. Psycho and Small Helm's need to be filled after obtaining them unlike Green Man. This is a safety strat and not required.
Hom Vs. Other Characters: Hom is my favorite character and he has all the tools you need for the speedrun. He has a good jump kick, a knockdown string that enemies commonly get hit by, great ground hitting lows, and good juggle tools. The character I see that outclasses him is Fei. He has a similar toolset to Hom's that is harder to use but more effective, on top of being shorter and thus harder to hit. I may do more runs with him in the future. Epon, Chuji, and Doctor V are all viable too.

The leaderboards require I include launching FFX in the submission, so in the beginning of this video I show me manipulating my seed. Targeting a certain seed is only feasibly possible on the HD version of FFX, playing on console or PC. Utilizing this knowledge and the amazing tracker, the entire run's battles can be pre-planned from the encounters you get, to item drops, to crits and damage rolls.
Run includes: Many early game crits. S-Steel drop in Besaid for getting speed spheres without taking extra encounters or customizing. Lightning Steel after 1st Luca machina battle. Double Letty no Blitzoff Skip. Rare Petrify Grenade steal for speed and safety during the guado encounters at Home. Special Sphere drops from Seymour to give Tidus the Steal and Use abilities. Without this mod, FFX generates a seed that plans how every action will play out ahead of time, allowing for players to track their runs and manipulate the battle events and encounters. In the case of the HD Remaster they can find a specific seed they have experience with and craft the perfect run within that seed.
This run was very lucky with most notably a triple Letty Blitzball, 1/8 Petrify Grenade steal, 1/8 Friend Sphere drop, Zombie Weapon drop, and Jecht Beam. I'm extremely happy with how I played in the early and late game, my play was shaky around halfway through but I picked it up and ended strongly. Also the text language is in Korean because it's one of the 3 fastest languages to play in, others being Japanese and Chinese. Chinese is fastest but I like Korean because I'm learning the language.
Obligatory twitch.tv/aerlien shill, you know how it goes.Marlwolf Strat ComparisonsAerlien2023-06-25 | A side-by-side look at how the different fights stack up when factoring in the setup beforehand.
The setup could be slightly faster, and the jump from Marlwolf to the cliff was done with a ledge grab. Overall though, the new strat is very difficult in comparison. If one were to opt out of the 2nd Super Jump they would have to land the Quick Kill to save any time over the old strat.Marlwolf Super JumpAerlien2023-06-25 | These strategies utilize a glitch not known by runners until very recently, discovered by user Rapsbry.
By taking out the Servbot manning a particular tank in Yass Plains, it applies the rising trajectory of the Servbot's death sequence to Mega Man when on top of an object that shares the ID of that Servbot. That object happens to be the tank right in front of Marlwolf, allowing for some sweet tricks.
Jumping at the beginning of the trick is done a certain way to manipulate the boss to use the green orb attack instead of the normal bomb/bird attack. This attack is much faster, and with enough luck on the following attack being bomb, the fight will end next to the cliff that the tank is on.
The ending dialogue can be skipped by forcing a text box on top of the dialogue. Under normal circumstances it's not possible, but with the super jump you can reach the door to Sub Gate before the game flags it as accessible, producing a "SAMPLE." text box. This cuts off every following dialogue box for the ending cinematic, and the cutscene ends as soon as the sample box closes.Mineskip Tutorial: No BallsAerlien2023-01-28 | This video aims to teach you about the Easy category of MML Speedrunning's most defining trick: Mineskip. A new method was just developed the other day and is much more consistent, faster, and overall more runner friendly than it once was.
Here are some quick tips you can reference without needing to skim the vid:
When entering the dungeon, stick to the left wall with your jet skate movement and line yourself up parallel to it after turning the corner. Wait for the Zakobon that appears to aggro onto you and then start moving back.
Next, after luring the Zako to the wall, you need to give yourself enough room to be able to hit the apex of your jump by the time you shoot the enemy twice and spawn the explosion. You might go for your shoot and jump at it and not get knocked sideways. If you jumped behind the explosion that means you're early, and if you got knocked straight back that means you're late.
Get a feel for how you can set yourself up for the trick and find a spot that works for you for beginning the climb. If you go close to the enemy, your inputs will have to be pressed in the order Shoot, Forward, Jump. If the position you want is further away, the order is Forward, Shoot, Jump.
Sometimes you can pause or re-pause too early. If you don't hear Mega Man take damage after you pause, that means you need to unpause and try pausing again. If this happened to you, congrats; you may have been frame-perfect!

Talking to data allows you become intangible to all contact or damage starting from the first frame of zooming in and wears off a moment before fully zooming out after you exit data's dialog box. Once you do exit, Mega Man's status is forcibly reset to a neutral standing position after a set amount of time. This can be abused by using an enemy to knock you back during the zoom out, and this knockback has invincibility and afterwards gets cancelled with the status reset. I met my goal time in this run! After dying and with how the run fell off in the lategame, I still want more though. The money for the run finally went as planned without any snags. Sushi though is another story.
This run was insane and still had a death in it! Attack and reels sushi are making a huge difference but some silly things went wrong. The fact that there are many mistakes to correct gives me confidence in a sub 2:30 but at the same time there were many lucky moments in this run.
I had unexpected money issues and a couple quick deaths. The fights against Black Hole and Gold Joe illustrate the potential of Reels Sushi and my next goal is to make more use of those and the sushi that refills katana energy.

Update: No items are required for this skip, except for i guess the gun you start with so you can shoot the zombie's leg off.
Navigating out there can be a bit vague and weird so if anyone has questions let me know. twitch.tv/aerlienRE2 Out of Bounds with Zombie Manip (Obsolete)Aerlien2019-01-29 | You kinda gotta stand on the rear end of it and steer it by standing on the side of it you want it to turn towards. This method makes it far more in control of the player rather than relying on RNG on a static position.

This run definitely has my worst final level to date though lol.
This run was done on the SPCH-50000 PS2 model, which loads incredibly quickly especially with the help of Fast Disc Speed, and the Japanese version of the game requires 1 less mission to complete the game compared to US.
