Sunday Longplay - F-Zero Maximum Velocity (GBA) MetalSmasherGaming 2023-10-08 | This week on Sunday Longplay, I'm keeping with the F-Zero theme in honor of the series's recent long-awaited return with F-Zero 99. Welcome to F-Zero Maximum Velocity for the Game Boy Advance.Maximum Velocity takes place 25 years after the original F-Zero on SNES, and as such, the original team of racers and their machines have retired and a new generation has arrived, though the gameplay remains pretty much identical. Every race consists of five laps around a race track. Players lose the race if their machine explodes due to taking too much damage, or if they land outside of the track, get ejected from the race due to falling to 20th place, complete a lap with a rank outside of the rank limit of that lap, or forfeit. In the single player Grand Prix mode, all of these conditions require the player to possess and use an extra machine to try again. However, unlike the OG F-Zero, there is no scoring system to allow you to gain more extra machines.For each lap completed the player is rewarded with a speed boost, to be used once any time; one of the "SSS" marks will be shaded green to indicate that it can be used. A boost will dramatically increase a player's speed, but will decrease their ability to turn. A boost used before a jump will make the player jump farther, which could allow the player to use a shortcut with the right vehicle. Boost time and speed varies according to the machine, and is usually tuned for proper balance. For example, one machine boasts a boost time of twelve seconds, yet has the slowest boost speed of the entire game. Players can also take advantage of the varying deceleration of each vehicle. Some vehicles, such as the Jet Vermilion, take longer than others to decelerate from top boost speed to normal speed, once the boost has been used up. Players can also take advantage of this effect on boost pads.The Grand Prix is the main single player component of Maximum Velocity. It consists of four series named after chess pieces: "Pawn", "Knight", "Bishop" and "Queen". The latter of these can be unlocked by winning the others on "Expert" mode. They have five races in four difficulty settings, "Master" mode is unlocked by winning expert mode in each series, the player unlocks a new machine after completing it. The player needs to be in the top three at the end of the last lap in order to continue to the next race. If the player is unable to continue, the player will lose a machine and can try the race again. If the player runs out of machines, then the game ends, and the player has to start the series from the beginning.Championship is another single player component. It is basically the same as a "Time Attack" mode, except the player can only race on one, special course: the Synobazz Championship Circuit. This special course is not selectable in any other modes.Also, unlike the SNES F-Zero, Maximum Velocity has both Single-Pak and Multi-Pak Multiplayer. The three new Queen League tracks that were added to the regular race pool have also been added for Team Battle, so let's get to it!In Team Battle, the 99 racers are divided into two teams: the Green Team and the Pink Team. Here, finishing in 1st place is only part of the battle. There are four different ways to score for your team in this mode. You score Spin Points by simply hitting players on the enemy team with your Spin Attack. You score KO Points by delivering the killing blow on an enemy player (the max energy bonus from KOs applies to all members of your team in this mode). You score Bumper Points by getting a Lucky Bumper after getting KO'd and bumping into enemy racers (so you can still help your team from the grave). You score Lap Points depending on your current position at the end of each lap (obviously the higher your position the more points you score). F-Zero 99 (Switch) - Queen League Grand Prix #1 MetalSmasherGaming 2023-10-02 | It's Monday, which means it's Grand Prix day once again! The Queen League update is here, so let's tackle the new tracks! Mute City 2, Port Town 1, and Red Canyon 1 have also been added to the regular race rotation, and White Land 1 was already in Pro Tracks from the beginning. However, just like Silence in the Knight League, White Land 2 is only playable in the finale of the Grand Prix.There are trick jumps in Red Canyon 1 and White Land 1 that I can do fairly consistently, so those tracks are where I can usually make up some ground. Looks like the big jump on White Land 2 was shortened too, which is good. If you can get a Super Boost on White Land 2, the skyway completely breaks the track, allowing you to completely bypass the notorious hairpin section!The Queen League update also adds Death Wind 2 from the King League to the Pro Tracks rotation. Sunday Longplay - F-Zero Beginnings (SNES ROM Hack) MetalSmasherGaming 2023-10-01 | Hack by @AlejandroChannel : romhacking.net/hacks/6375In the spirit of F-Zero with the recent release of F-Zero 99 on the Switch, I thought for this week's Sunday Longplay I'd play a rather interesting hack of the OG F-Zero on SNES. Welcome to F-Zero Beginnings!F-Zero Beginnings is a prequel to the OG F-Zero, where before the iconic cars and their drivers we know now joined the Grand Prix, there was only one type of car on the track, known as Turbo Snails (also called Bumpers in F-Zero 99). All the cars have been replaced with different types of Turbo Snails which have different levels of speed and handling, though all are below average compared to the iconic four. Your boosts even only have half the duration! So with all this in mind, expect a new level of challenge from the original game!The Purple Snail is the best choice for beginners, with its acceleration and turn speed, though it is extremely susceptible to guardrail damage. The Green Snail has the highest top speed, but terrible acceleration and resistance to CPU crashes, and it also has very slippery turning. The Brown Snail is so slow that Expert and Master modes are impossible to beat with it, and the Explosive Snail is even slower and explodes upon any sort of damage be it from guardrails, mines, or enemy cars. Imagine playing F-Zero 99 with your car perpetually in Power Down mode.For this playthrough I'm playing Master mode on the Knight and Queen Leagues with the Purple and Green Snails respectively, and then for the King League I'm taking the ultimate challenge with the Explosive Snail! Like I said, Master and Expert modes are impossible to beat with the Brown and Explosive Snails because of their absurdly low top speed, and I also initially tried it on Standard but that turned out to be impossible as well (ranked out on Port Town 2). Among my matches in this session were two comeback wins in the last lap and probably the closest match I've had so far!In Team Battle, the 99 racers are divided into two teams: the Green Team and the Pink Team. Here, finishing in 1st place is only part of the battle. There are four different ways to score for your team in this mode. You score Spin Points by simply hitting players on the enemy team with your Spin Attack. You score KO Points by delivering the killing blow on an enemy player (the max energy bonus from KOs applies to all members of your team in this mode). You score Bumper Points by getting a Lucky Bumper after getting KO'd and bumping into enemy racers (so you can still help your team from the grave). You score Lap Points depending on your current position at the end of each lap (obviously the higher your position the more points you score). F-Zero 99 (Switch) - Knight League Grand Prix #2 MetalSmasherGaming 2023-09-25 | It's Monday, which means it's Grand Prix day once again! The Queen League update should be coming sometime this week (Nintendo does say "late September" on the website), but in the meantime, let's get some more practice on the Knight League courses! Death Wind 1 is probably the hardest track in the Knight League for me to win, just because its simplistic design makes it hard to gain ground or catch up if you fall behind after getting bumped away from a boost pad, and I was literally an inch away from ranking out at the very end in the 2nd tournament. F-Zero 99 (Switch) - Weekend Variety Marathon #2 MetalSmasherGaming 2023-09-24 | It has finally happened! F-Zero is finally on Switch! In last Thursday's Nintendo Direct, Nintendo announced the glorious return of the long-dormant futuristic racing series, in the form of a new 99-player Battle Royale! First there was Tetris 99, then there was Super Mario Bros. 35, then there was Pac-Man 99, and now, say hello to the newest entry in the Nintendo Switch battle royale family, F-Zero 99!Like Super Mario Bros. 35 before it, F-Zero 99 is basically the entirety of the original F-Zero on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System but with 99 players racing at once! With this also comes some new mechanics, some taken from F-Zero X on the Nintendo 64 (notably the Spin Attack, and the system of boosts consuming your energy), and also the brand-new Skyway mechanic. When cars spin-attack each other, they leave golden sparks on the road that you can collect. Collecting them fills up your Super Boost meter. Once the meter is full, you can activate a Super Boost that will take you onto the transparent Skyway above the track. The Skyway allows you to bypass all the bumper cars on the main track, has additional dash plates on top of your regular boost, and can even cut across some corners on the main track, so it pays to strategize where to best use your Super Boosts.Another mechanic returning from F-Zero X is the Rival system, which is where four players close to you in skill level (or current rank in the case of Grand Prix or Mini Prix events) are assigned as rivals. Finishing the race ahead of your rivals will boost your rank meter, which works similarly to Splatoon. The meter goes up toward the next rank more the more rivals you beat. But if you don't beat any, the meter goes down. Fill the meter up all the way to reach the next rank. Also like Splatoon, the ranks start at C- and go up to S+, although there is also an S- rank, and apparently you can go past S+ up to S2 and even S3. I think the highest I've seen so far is S5.There are several ways to race. There is the regular F-Zero 99 race where you race 98 other players on a single race, there is Team Battle where the 99 players are split into two teams trying to score the most points based on attacks, KOs, and position, there is Pro Tracks where you play on the more difficult tracks in the game, there is the Mini Prix event which is a random three-race series with a ranking point system similar to F-Zero X, and there is the Grand Prix, which is a 5-race series based on the leagues of the OG F-Zero (currently only the Knight League is available, though the Queen and King Leagues will be added later).Let's celebrate the weekend in style, with a feature-length marathon spanning all modes! Doom: Scientist (Unity Add-On) - Map 1: The Scientist (UV-Max) MetalSmasherGaming 2023-09-24 | With the end of Revolution comes the beginning of another Doom add-on! The next add-on I will be covering is Scientist, made by Roland van der Velden, brother of Revolution developer Thomas van der Velden, in 2005 and added to the list of add-ons to the Classic Doom Unity Port on August 10, 2023.The story revolves around the player journeying through a city, a Soviet base in Siberia, and finally a series of ancient ruins to track down and kill the main antagonist of the story: a scientist seeking to gain immortality through his experiments. This scientist replaces two enemies in the game: first the Wolfenstein soldier in level 1, and then the Cyberdemon in the last level. Doom: Revolution! (Unity Add-On) - Map 30: The Forgotten God (UV-Max) MetalSmasherGaming 2023-09-23 | Map 30, the last level of Doom Revolution, is probably the simplest Icon of Sin-style final boss map I've played so far. All you have to do is hit one of the two switches to raise the back platform up to Chaos's head, run over to said platform, and fire rockets at the head. However, you have to be quick to get up there, because if you're too slow, the platform will re-lower as you step on it, only allowing you to get one shot off, and you'll have to go back and hit one of the switches again.
