DERV GORDON with SO WHAT Rough Rider 7-28-17 Elbo Room, SF I Get So Excited 2017-08-04 | This was the first time ever Derv had ever performed "Rough Rider" live. Derv co-wrote "Rough Rider" along with his brother Lincoln, Eddy Grant, and Eddy's older brother Patrick. The Equals recorded it in '67, but it was released under the name The Four Gees because its subject matter was considered too risqué to be an Equals release. Prince Buster covered it and had a huge hit with it. He even claimed writing credit when it was first released. THE EQUALS Friday Night 1973 stereo I Get So Excited 2016-07-31 | From The Equals "Rock Around The Clock Vol. 1" LP. This the one and only Equals song credited to Eddy Grant's replacement, Jimmy Haynes, real name Cecil Haynes. He replaced Eddy in early 1971 and stayed in the group for about a year. This tune was recorded before the group left President in late '71/early '72. Jimmy was an ace guitarist and played on Frank Zappa's first solo album, "Lumpy Gravy", Johnny Thunders and Patty Palladin's duet "Copy Cats", in addition to winning a Grammy while producing Steel Pulse. This was intended as an album track and released without the band's knowledge after they had left President Records. THE EQUALS Beautiful Clown original mono single 1977 Junkshop Glam I Get So Excited 2015-01-24 | The Equals are perhaps one of the most underrated bands in musical history. This glam stomper, written and produced by Eddy Grant, was their last single released on President. Although released in 1977, it was recorded in 1971 at the same time as their blistering "Diversion" single. Also, despite the sleeve stating that this is "stereo" it's actually in glorious mono. I ripped this directly from the original 1977 German pressing. All of their records have been out of print on vinyl for nearly 40 years which is a shame. I am currently writing a book on The Equals covering 1964 to roughly 1974.
