Yeah, Maths as an endurance sportAyliean2026-07-22 | ...Teaching Maths With Origami || Quadrilaterals and CranesAyliean2026-07-05 | Learning and teaching maths, specifically shape, with origami! I used to love doing this type of lesson in my classroom. They key is to prime people to think mathematically and give them enough time to explore their thoughts at every step of the way. You can get a class full of 30 kids through an origami crane in about 20-25 mins but if you give them the whole 50 min lesson you can have some great conversations along the way.
You're also practicing using mathematical vocabulary, and depending on how you run your class the social skill for the day can be "good listening" because there are a lot of instructions!
Stumbled across this in the old Ayliean archives! Judging by the length it was for old Twitter (RIP) and I have always wondered if I need to keep content which is more for teachers separate... but people can decide themselves which videos they want to watch!

Also, what do we think about the title of this video? Too click bait? This is just a casual, conversational look at the topic- feel free to drop in your thoughts. If it turns out I’ve made an horrific error I’ll take it down :)
In the past two weeks I’ve been asked to speak on the radio about: - Overcoming Maths Anxiety - A couple in Wales who won a million in the lottery TWICE! - Should darts be added to the Maths Curriculum
Each of these could be a whole essay if you wanted, but you get 2-3 minutes on the radio.

Too long for a short.
The Orkney Science Festival was so cool, at one point I was in a swimming pool with a bunch of physicists and 50 Orcadians, learning about gravitational waves and listening to experimental techno made with the sound of the LIGO gravitational wave chips. There were speakers above and below the water so you could hear how the waves move differently through different mediums. It was rad.
Don’t worry I have a few proper videos in the works and I will get them to you as soon as possible! Why was this video in 720p? I edit my videos on my phone, which is now 6 years old, and it was clear early on in the edit that exporting it was going to be a mission in terms of storage ... I deleted every other app on my phone, bounced it in 720p as a backup, and then started deleting out takes and videos to free up more space .... long story short there was a catastrophic technical error which is partly my fault, so enjoy this limited edition 720p video! Notes from Ayliean’s brain: Sorry YouTubes for the vertical video, I have 9 times as many followers on ye olde vertical platforms so this is how it has to be …. unless the subscriber ratios swing wildly in the other direction (which I would love).

Closing date: 27th October
Pedantic side note from my brain: The competition is called the “Mad Hat Einstein Awards” which I just didn’t want to say on the video because I’m not into stigmatising mental health (even very slightly). Lewis Carroll was also not a good person so I don’t love that reference either.
But besides the name of the competition I’d love to see people getting money and recognition for doing cool creative Maths things - so best of luck and please show me anything you come up with… after the deadline… so I don’t steal your ideas (I would never do that… or would I)
