MAKING of these compilations: Long-expected projects, unexpected timing
This idea first existed 20 years ago in my mind: of putting together these random footage, so that I could finally watch them in one sitting without interruption. 20 years later, more materials had been published, but files are still scattered.
One day I just started the process, unexpectedly.
It wasn't an easy project; maybe that's why no one else had done it. As a reader, I was already a collector of these things: docu CD's and stuff, so I had a starting point. The real challenge was that these materials had been mixed and remixed in so many random ways over the decades. And there were so few reference data.
Some footage were not easy to be found at first; took me a while to be convinced that there were no more. The editing process took two weeks of long nights reviewing the video and audio segments altogether.
In the end, 100+ hours had gone into the process and many more hours afterwards to improve the subtitles.
Now that it has been completed, it's nice to know that people actually appreciate the result.
Now, if BBC could release the remaining materials...

Concert is called "At the drop of another hat" with Michael Flanders. In this video Swann sings "I sit beside the fire" and "A Elbereth Gilthoniel".
==========
"Road Goes Ever On" Song Cycle
Donald Swann visited Tolkien in May 1965 for the first time and demo'd these songs for opinion. Tolkien approved most of them. The Song Cycle was soon published in UK/US.
They eventually became family friends. Swann joined Tolkien's 80th birthday party in Oxford 1972.
Donald Swann could be considered as a figure from "The Second Age of Middle-earth" because of his close friendship with Tolkien. His "Road Goes Ever On" is also a popular collection among Tolkien fans because Tolkien actually listened and approved them.
Therefore, this rare footage deserves to be acknowledged and archived :-)

JRRT had recorded only one song (Of Beren and Luthien, partial) from the Elder Days. These recordings by CT are the next best thing we have.

When BBC arranged several days to interview Tolkien in 1968, a lot of Video/Audio materials were never used and are still sitting in BBC storage. These unpublished materials are only available on transcript provided by Oxford professor Stuart Lee in 2018 (Tolkien in Oxford Reconstruction, PDF).
The PDF file has a lot of good stuff but is very long and difficult to read for most people. Extracting Tolkien's words into audio makes it more accessible.
======== The whole 1968 interview has now been compiled into 3 parts in this channel:
part-1: released video (see video #1) part-2: released audio (see video #8 - green cover) part-3: this video
Voice cloning: The first 20 minutes is generated using Tolkien's voice recordings. Similarity is there but it is far being anything deepfake/disrespectful if you are already familiar with Tolkien's recordings (though most people still got fooled by the fake Eagle-Doom video).

================ This documentary may appear "boring" - certainly it will be the case for most viewers.
It is intended that no "modern" music or illustrations were used here -- Tolkien's life story does not require external enhancement.
The audio segments are specially selected from his audio recordings -- Bilbo, Gollum, Frodo and Sam. The ending music also has a personal connection to Tolkien.
There are a lot of details in this video perhaps only a Tolkien reader will notice - and hopefully also find moving.
So, please stay with it until the end -- especially the end.Tolkiens MOST Infectious Laughter - audio collectionTalking About Tolkien2023-05-06 | Tolkien's secretary Naomi Collyer recalls: "...I had to laugh anyway because his humour was so infectious."
So, here are some of Tolkien's MOST infectious laughter from radio interviews!
JUST WHY?
YES!Christopher Tolkien reads The Children of Hurin (2007) audio excerptTalking About Tolkien2023-04-15 | This is an audiobook excerpt of Christopher Tolkien reading "The Children of Hurin" (2007).
The entire main text is narrated by the late actor Christopher LEE in full (8 hours), with CJRT reading the Preface and Introduction.
Keep in mind that CJRT was then aged 82, though his voice here is still strong and capable.
This would be his 3rd (and final) published reading of his father's works. CJRT certainly did not make appearance on the audiobook of the final two books (2017 Beren and Luthien, 2018 The Fall of Gondolin).
(other two reading being "Tolkien Audio Collection" and "Homecoming Beorntnoth") In "Tolkien Audio Collection", CJRT reads 2 HOURS of The Silmarillion - Of the Darkening of Valinor (14 min) - Of the Flight of the Noldor (45 min) - Of Beren and Luthien (68 min)

And with this upload, my Project "RestoreTOLKIEN" is also completed (for now).
The precious Video and Audio files of JRRT and CJRT are now in one place for the world to see.
There are still some files hidden somewhere (esp at BBC); hopefully we'll see more of those someday!Tolkien - 1954 Audio excerpt - Homecoming of BeorhtnothTalking About Tolkien2023-04-02 | This audio is an excerpt from his personal recording in 1954: "Homecoming of Beorhtnoth"
HB is Tolkien's short writing (first published in 1953, 18 pages), inspired by the Old English poem "The Battle of Maldon", which is based on the real historical event in 991 AD.
HB is written in the form of an alliterative poem, but is also a play, being mainly a dialogue between two characters in the aftermath of the battle.
Tolkien later decided to voice record the whole thing in 1954; the material was first released in 1992 in cassette tapes. Christopher Tolkien also reads the Intro and two accompanying essays (both written by JRRT).
The audio is published again in March 2023 (55 minutes):
Intro (CJRT) 2 min Beorhtnoth's Death (CJRT) 8 min HB (JRRT) 26 min Ofermod (CJRT) 19 min
Needless to say, Tolkien really loved having a voice recorder at home!

==============
MAKING of this compilation
This is another 10/10 difficulty project (thus CleanCut).
Full length of BBC 2016 Release is 1 hour of annoying production, consists of gibberish and talking of random people.
They even voiced over the original recording and ruined some bits. Eventually there's only 4 minutes of new JRRT audio.
"Tolkien Audio Portrait" (2 hours) is also heavily mixed and remixed, using all his interview materials (video and audio). There's also a ton of other people talking.
After cutting all the junk, there's only 4 minutes of unique JRRT.
Subtitles and their timing are also adjusted for better viewing.JRR Tolkien - 1965 AUDIO interview by BBC Gueroult - SUBTITLESTalking About Tolkien2023-03-18 | This is just the same copy of the well-known interview, from 1965 BBC by Denys Gueroult. I include it here finally since I am already putting all of Tolkien's interviews in one spot in this channel.
Subtitle is greatly improved than other online versions.
Gueroult interviewed Tolkien in 1964.11 (short session) and 1965.01 (longer); BBC produced this longer remix from both sessions.
Short version was first broadcast in 1970.12 (BBC labels it 1964 mistakenly; 1965 is correct.)
- this is the longest of all published Tolkien interviews. - a very good session; covers a wide variety of topics. - timestamps are added for each segment.

There were about 20 traditional interviews with Tolkien that ever existed; articles were published in newspapers and magazines.
Here are 9 of them, while the rest have proven difficult to track down - Texts are read by AI voices. Only Tolkien's direct quotes are included - All 9 audio files are combined here -- 40 minutes of audio - Some quotes are very unique, not seen elsewhere - For full context read the original articles (links at credit)
1 00:00 1955 Breit 2 00:50 1961 Gustafsson 3 03:40 1966 Resnick (12min) 4 16:05 1966 Plimmer (5min) 5 21:02 1966 Daphne Castell (9min) 6 30:05 1967 Philip Norman (6min) 7 35:52 1968 Keith Brace 8 37:09 1972 William Foster 9 38:34 2001 Bill Cater: recount 1966
PS. The AI voice isn't too bad. There are other voices but they cost money. So, do read the articles first to get the context if you're interested, then it's easy to listen and enjoy this audio.
Compiling these archival stuff was not easy, as it required serious deep mining. It started with a basic list on Tolkien Gateway website; then I looked through JRRTC&G and found more entries.
Next step was the slow process of crawling and digging the depth of internet to get more info on each entry. After two months, I'm convinced the list is settled for now, and that these 9 articles are ready to go.
Next, I searched for various AI voice options and settled for this one. Final step was the tiresome task of text-to-audio process.
So, if you appreciate it please Like and Share, though materials like this wont be bothered or interested by 99% of the viewers.
But then again, I did these projects really just for my personal pleasure; after all, it's Tolkien ;)
