#merrychristmas #happyholidays #japanesesantaWhat’s This For?Lets ask Shogo | Your Japanese friend in Kyoto2024-10-15 | Have you ever wondered what this on the katana is for? This metal fitting is called Habaki, and although it is small, it actually has important functions. The first purpose is to keep the blade suspended within the scabbard when sheathed. If the blade contacts the inside of the scabbard, it risks getting scratched or rusted. To avoid this, the blade is securely fixed by the habaki. Another purpose is to prevent the blade from easily falling out of the scabbard. If the blade were to come out with slight movements or during transport, it would be dangerous. In the past, people always carried their swords at their waist, so they couldn’t always hold down the tsuba with their thumb. Thus, the habaki helps to keep the blade in place.
However, in case of emergency, the sword must be drawn quickly. The habaki is crafted with such precision that while it prevents accidental unsheathing, it allows for quick drawing when needed. Interestingly, there are even specialized craftsmen known as “Shiroganeshi” who make habaki.

#letsaskshogo #japan #traveljapan #japanesehistory #japanesecultureWhy Slide Your Feet with Katana?Lets ask Shogo | Your Japanese friend in Kyoto2024-10-03 | One of the questions I get asked the most is, “Why do you slide your feet when you fight with the katana.” The sliding of the feet, called “Suriashi” in Japanese, is practiced in almost all forms of traditional Japanese culture, including Budo, dancing, and tea ceremonies. There are several theories as to why this particular walking style is practiced:
1. To walk in traditional Japanese footwear 2. To be compatible with traditional flooring materials 3. To keep the center of gravity low and maintain a stable posture 4. To make movements quiet and smooth
I believe the primary reason is the first one. Traditional Japanese footwear such as zori and geta make walking difficult if you lift your feet like in Western shoes. Therefore, naturally, you have to adopt a sliding step. In fact, I think the design of the floors and the development of traditional culture adapted to this walking style. Do you know any other benefits of the sliding step? Let me know in the comments!

#japan #japaneseculture #lifeinjapanWhen You Sit with KatanaLets ask Shogo | Your Japanese friend in Kyoto2024-09-28 | In the past, whenever a samurai would sit on the floor indoors, they would usually bring their katana out of their belt and keep it on the right side. Samurai were all forced to be right handed, so if they keep their katana on the left, it was a sign of their will to fight. Because it’s a lot easier to draw with their dominant hand. To show respect and less hostility, they would usually keep their katana on their right. However, there are of course many techniques where you can draw the katana with your left hand from this position too. After all, if you can't fight from any situation, you can't call yourself a samurai. Please check out my online lessons if you want to learn katana techniques.

#japan #kyototour #kyoto #kyototravelMust We Tie This String?Lets ask Shogo | Your Japanese friend in Kyoto2024-09-05 | You might have seen Japanese katana trainees tie these strings to their hakama or obi. Some people say it’s meant to keep the katana in your hakama when you use Tsuka techniques to fight. But if your scabbard is too short, it really wouldn’t matter. If you look at old illustrations of samurai, you can see that they hardly ever tied their sageo to their hakama. Then why do many Ryuha styles still tie them?
There are various theories, but I was taught the more spiritual aspect. Since ancient times, it has been believed in Japan that katanas hold deity, and strings are believed to have the power to connect the spiritual power of the katana. That is why various strings exist in sacred places such as shrines and temples. In other words, it is believed that by tying Sageo string, one can possess the spiritual power of katana.
Considering that iai was originally practiced to protect the dignity of the samurai rather than for combat purposes, it is not surprising that it has this kind of spiritual meaning. What do you think? Please let me know in the comments.

#letsaskshogo #japan #kyoto #katana #iaido #kimono #menskimono #noh #nihonbuyoWakizashi vs. TantōLets ask Shogo | Your Japanese friend in Kyoto2024-08-02 | Whenever I talk about the shorter katana Wakizashi, many people say it was used for Seppuku. However, Seppuku was mainly done with the Tantō. Tantō literally means “short katana,” and it’s even shorter than the Wakizashi. Wakizashi are katana from 1 Shaku to 2 Shaku, but Tantō are shorter than 1 Shaku. The Tantō is famous for being used for Seppuku. But it was also something samurai had on their waist when they were at home in their room clothes, a self-defense weapon women carried in their kimono, etc. By the way, if they were ever used for Seppuku, the mounting would be removed, and paper would be wrapped around the tang.

#thankyou #foryour #support #thingstodoinkyotoGion Festival Facing Major BacklashLets ask Shogo | Your Japanese friend in Kyoto2024-07-04 | The Gion Festival, one of Japan’s three major festivals, takes place throughout July in Kyoto. The most famous event during this festival is the parade of floats. However, a controversy has arisen. The chief priest of Yasaka Shrine criticized the Kyoto Tourism Association’s plan to set up ¥400,000 VIP seats where people could watch the parade while dining. The priest emphasized that the Gion Festival is fundamentally a religious event, and he urged people to participate with the proper attitude, without eating or drinking. As a result, the price was reduced to ¥150,000, where only soft drinks are provided, and the issue was resolved. What do you think about this matter? It’s understandable that the priest wants to uphold tradition and ensure the festival is respected. However, the tourism association did not intend to make money for themselves, but to cover the tens of millions of yen needed to hold the festival. The shortfall in funds would otherwise come from the taxes of Kyoto residents. Meanwhile, temples and shrines are exempt from property taxes, and the collected offerings are non-taxable.While it’s easy for Yasaka Shrine to criticize, placing additional financial burdens on Kyoto residents seems counterproductive to preserving tradition.

#thankyou #foryour #support #thingstodoinkyotoWhy Grooves on Katana?Lets ask Shogo | Your Japanese friend in Kyoto2024-07-03 | Ever wondered why there are grooves on the blade? In Japanese, they are called Hi or Bōhi, and there are various reasons and theories for why katana have them. First, it’s to make the blade lighter. A katana with a Hi is 10% lighter than those without. Second, it makes the swinging sound bigger. A katana without the Hi does make a sound too, but it’s not as big and clear. Third, it makes it easier to pull the blade out after a thrust. Like kitchen knives with holes don’t get the ingredients stuck to the blade, the Hi makes the blade easier to remove from the opponent’s body after a thrust. What other theories do you know? Please let me know in the comments.

#thankyou #foryour #support #thingstodoinkyotoWhy Chiburui (Blood Shake) is MeaninglessLets ask Shogo | Your Japanese friend in Kyoto2024-06-30 | At the end of a Kata of Iai/Kenjutsu, there’s this motion called the Chiburui which means “blood shake.” However, as many people discuss, these movements are insufficient to remove blood from the blade. Then why do most Ryuha styles have these movements?
1. A form of Zanshin 2. A ritual of Shintoism
By performing the Chiburui, you are bringing the tip of the katana toward the opponent to prepare for another attack. In Japanese Budo martial arts, maintaining awareness even after defeating an opponent is called “Zanshin.” However, some Chiburui do not involve pointing the tip of the sword at the opponent. In such cases, there may be a religious significance. In Shinto, the indigenous religion of Japan, blood is considered impure. Therefore, Chiburui can also mean purifying the blood-stained katana before sheathing it. However, with over a hundred Ryuha of iai, so not everything fits into these two reasons. What are your thoughts? Please let me know in the comments.

#thankyou #foryour #support #thingstodoinkyotoWhat I Hate Tourists Doing in JapanLets ask Shogo | Your Japanese friend in Kyoto2024-06-27 | There are so many travelers in Kyoto now as if the covid pandemic never happened. As much as I am happy that everyone is visiting my favorite city in Japan, there is something I really don’t like seeing tourists do. It is… Sitting on the ground in public spaces. The act of sitting outside on the ground or floor is considered very vulgar in Japan. There are religious and cultural reasons for this, such as the fact that in Japan people sleep and sit on the floor, and if they get dirty, they will ruin their own and others' homes. Now, do Japanese people never do this? Unfortunately, some do. But if you ever have a chance to visit Japan, take a look at those who sit in front of convenience stores or near game stations. You will notice that many people have no manners and no decency. When people sit on the ground, it ruins the scenery and is disturbing for many Japanese. It may be tough sometimes, but you should stand unless you find a bench or some other place where you are allowed to sit.

#thankyou #foryour #support #thingstodoinkyotoKatana on the Right WaistLets ask Shogo | Your Japanese friend in Kyoto2024-06-23 | Many people ask me if they can have their katana on their right waist because they are left-handed. The answer may differ depending on who you ask, but my senseis and I would say NO. This is because having your katana on your right waist was forbidden in the past. To carry on iai as a traditional culture, the old customs must be followed at a certain level. Otherwise, the original form will be lost. However, some left-handed people claim this is "discriminatory." However, the left hand is very important in Iai techniques such as katana drawing and sword swinging. In addition, many swordsmen who have left their names in history, such as Miyamoto Musashi and Saito Ichi, are left-handed. In other words, right-handed and left-handed people have different starting points; eventually, we must master both hands.

#thankyou #foryour #support #thingstodoinkyotoIai is FAKELets ask Shogo | Your Japanese friend in Kyoto2024-06-22 | Whenever we perform Kata like these, some people say “Samurai would NOT sit Seiza on the floor with their katana on their waist!” That is both right and wrong. Whenever samurai sat Seiza on the floor in the past, they would take their katana out of their belt and place it on the floor next to them. However, to make the technique more difficult to perform in Iai training, they would purposely train Kata where they keep their katana on their waist. This was a training method that existed from the samurai time. So it was something they would never do in their daily lives, but would often do in their katana training.

#thankyou #foryour #support #thingstodoinkyotoWhy the Triangle BowLets ask Shogo | Your Japanese friend in Kyoto2024-06-20 | In many Iai Ryuha styles, you are taught to put your nose into the triangle you make when you bow sitting down. Why do we bow like this? It’s not only because it looks the most polite. This is to protect your face in case someone presses your head down. This is a fine example of keeping one's eyes on the opponent even when not looking at them. It’s also important not to show the back of your neck when you bow. This is something you would have done when you get your head decapitated. In my tea ceremony Ryuha, we bow like this to not touch the floor as much as possible. In the past, Noh plays were performed for high-ranking samurai, so the hands are opened wide, and the head is bowed as deeply as possible. Since the bowing style differs from Ryuha to Ryuha, please pay attention to the details of the bowing.

#thankyou #foryour #support #thingstodoinkyotoHow You’re Drawing a Katana IncorrectlyLets ask Shogo | Your Japanese friend in Kyoto2024-06-18 | A common mistake when drawing your katana is this: However, what you should do is this: Extend your left arm in front of you, and draw by pulling the Saya (sheath) back. There are mainly three reasons why this is benefitial. You are maintaining distance from the opponent. Your draw will be faster by pulling your Saya back. You can hide your blade until the very last moment you draw. Let’s go deeper into the third reason. During the Edo period (1603~1868), regardless of who killed whom, the one who showed 3 Sun of his blade first was considered guilty of a duel among samurai. This means you don’t want to show your blade until the very last moment you draw. By bringing the katana out in front of you, you can draw faster and hide the blade as long as possible. Please check out my online lessons if you want to learn katana techniques.

#thankyou #foryour #support #thingstodoinkyotoHow to be Pissed in KyotoLets ask Shogo | Your Japanese friend in Kyoto2024-06-16 | I’ve lived in Kyoto for over a decade and worked in the tourism industry since 2017. But there was one time I was scolded pretty badly when I had a job at a Maiko house. Guess what I did? I accidentally called a Geiko a Geisha. …What does that even mean? Maiko are undertraining entertainers from the age of 15~20, and Geiko are fully trained adult entertainers. But did you know that Maiko and Geiko are originally an expression used exclusively in Kyoto? Outside Kyoto, women entertainers were called Hangyoku (understrained) or Geisha (fully trained). So, the people of the entertainment districts in Kyoto still have pride in their unique names and doesn’t like being called Geisha. If you ever have a chance to meet them in Kyoto, they would be very happy if you could correctly call them a Geiko.

♪Music♪ otowabi.com/category/material/japan ♪Sound effects♪ soundeffect-lab.info ♪Pictures♪ irasutoya.comKatana vs. Tachi: The Obvious DifferenceLets ask Shogo | Your Japanese friend in Kyoto2024-06-15 | Not only when you decorate them, but Uchi-katana has the sharp edge up, and the Tachi has the sharp edge down when you equip them on your waist too. This time, what’s more important is not the “front side” but whether it’s easier to draw. Using equipment, Tachi were hanging on your waist, so they would be positioned very low. It would be very difficult to draw if you had the sharp edge facing up. On the other hand, Uchi-katana are inserted into your obi belt, so its positioned much higher. Also, Iai techniques require you to unsheath and sheath in the fight, so you can easily cut your hands with the sharp edge down. I sometimes see people saying, “I am a Ronin, so I can have my Uchi-katana facing down if I want to. ”But you’re not a Ronin having the sharp edge down. You’re just very weak. Because if doing that way was better, someone must have thought of it during the few 100 years of samurai history. There are meanings to how things were done in the past. If you can’t agree with that, you shouldn’t try to train in traditional martial arts.

#thankyou #foryour #support #thingstodoinkyotoIs This Discrimination?Lets ask Shogo | Your Japanese friend in Kyoto2024-06-13 | When I made videos with Seki Sensei having him try out fighting with replicas of Western swords, I explained that we can’t the real ones in Japan because it’s against the laws. But then there were tons of comments saying that it’s discriminative because you’re allowed to have real katana in Japan. The 銃刀法 restricts the owning of weapons in Japan without special permisson, and any blade longer than ** is against the law. Then why are katana ok? Because katana are considered art in Japan that has shaped a great part of our culture and history. Each katana is submitted with a registration card to prove its authenticity, that it was made using traditional steel and methods. In other words, a random blade shaped like a katana wouldn’t be considered a katana either. Do you think this is discrimination? Please let me know in the comments.

#katana #iai #kenjutsu #kimono #menskimonoHow You’re Sheathing a Katana IncorrectlyLets ask Shogo | Your Japanese friend in Kyoto2024-06-10 | A common mistake when sheathing your katana is this… However, what you should do is this: Keep the Tsuka-gashira, the end of the handle, at the center of your body, This is because you can only draw toward the direction the Tsuka-gashira is facing. Some call Iai, the Budo of katana drawing, “the art of constant cautiousness.” The ultimate goal is not to give any chance to the opponent to attack. So if you move the Tsuka-gashira around very time you sheath, you can’t immediately draw again if necessary. You must use your left hand more to control the sheath so that the Tsuka-gashira stays at the center. Please check out my online lessons if you want to learn katana techniques.

#japanesereact #japanreaction #iaido #kenjutsu #katanaYour Thumb and KatanaLets ask Shogo | Your Japanese friend in Kyoto2024-06-08 | Many people know you must keep your thumb on the Tsuba handguard to prevent the katana from falling out and to unseal the katana. But you don’t just randomly place your thumb, but on the right side, closer to your body. There are two reasons why this is beneficial. To hide your thumb from attacks. To turn the katana efficiently. If you keep your thumb on the top or the left, you risk getting this attacked. You can avoid losing a finger just by slightly bringing your thumb to the right. Second, in Iai techniques, you often turn the katana over for uppercuts or reverse grip drawing. Turning the katana over is much easier if your thumb is on the right. If your thumb is on the left, this is as far as you can go. Please check out my online lessons if you want to learn katana techniques.

#thankyou #foryour #support #thingstodoinkyotoWhat Do the Colors Mean?Lets ask Shogo | Your Japanese friend in Kyoto2024-06-06 | If you visit the various shrines in Japan, you will realize that the Torii gates have different colors. They are mainly red or white. White was originally mainly used as an expression of holiness. This is also the reason why the kimono worn by women when getting married, the Shiro-muku (white kimono), is completely white. After Buddhism spread in Japan, the color red became mainstream. In Buddhism, the color red (vermilion) is meant to ward off evil. Vermilion is always used in the makeup of maiko to prevent them from being exposed to evil spirits, as white powder makes them look like ghosts. However, there are other torii that are not painted, blue, black, yellow, gold, and pink. Please look for them when you travel Japan. By the way, the torii represents the shrine's boundary, and once you enter it, it indicates that you are in a sacred space. It would be polite to bow before and after you pass the gates.

♪Music♪ otowabi.com/category/material/japan ♪Sound effects♪ soundeffect-lab.info ♪Pictures♪ irasutoya.comKatana vs. Tachi: NOT Your ChoiceLets ask Shogo | Your Japanese friend in Kyoto2024-06-05 | It’s often discussed whether the sharp edge should be up or down or the handle should be on the left or right. To make a long story short, Uchi-katana must have the sharp edge up, and Tachi must have the sharp edge down. Both have the handle always on the left. This is because this is the way to show the “front side” of each blade.
There is a front and back side to katanas, the front side for Uchi-katana, and this is the front side for Tachi. You can figure that out by seeing which side of the tang has the swordsmith's signature. You can’t randomly decide which side you want that katana to be up. It’s already decided by the type of katana and its design. Please check out my online lessons if you want to learn katana techniques.

#thankyou #foryour #support #thingstodoinkyotoSensei What…?Lets ask Shogo | Your Japanese friend in Kyoto2024-06-05 | Many Japanese phrases/words have been used incorrectly overseas. One of which that sounds very strange is calling someone “Sensei **.” For example, people often ask me, “Can I ask Sensei Seki a question?,” or “How can I take Sensei Yushin’s classes?” This is like calling me “Yamaguchi Mr.” in English, or “San-Shogo” in Japanese. It’s “Shogo-san,” right? Titles in Japanese, such as Sensei, Senpai, Shachō, etc., must come after the person’s name. When you call someone in Japanese, please keep this in mind.

#katana #iaido #iai #budo #japaneseswordGrandpa YakuzaLets ask Shogo | Your Japanese friend in Kyoto2024-06-01 | You may have a strong and scary image of the Japanese yakuza from movies and video games. However, did you know that the real-life Yakuza are now a group of elders? As of the end of last year, the total yakuza force continued to decline for the 18th consecutive year, shrinking to 22,400 members. In terms of age structure, the largest number of gang members are in their 50s (30.8%), followed by those in their 40s (26.3%), 30s (12.9%), 60s (12.5%), 70s and above (11.6%), and 20s (5.4%). More than half of the members are in their 50s or older, and their average age is 54.2. This is not only because Japanese society suffers from a declining birthrate and aging population but also because yakuza activities have been considerably restricted since the 1990s and because more young people do not want to be restricted by hierarchical relationships. If the number of yakuza is decreasing, is Japan becoming more peaceful? The answer is no. Gangs called Hangure, which are not yakuza but commit crimes collectively, are rather active and have become a major problem in Japan.

#thankyou #foryour #support #thingstodoinkyotoWakizashi vs. KodachiLets ask Shogo | Your Japanese friend in Kyoto2024-05-28 | The shorter katana that samurai of the Edo period (1603~1868) used to carry is called Wakizashi. However, this is sometimes called a "Kodachi (small Tachi)". What are the differences between the names? First of all, Wakizashi and Kodachi (small Tachi) are the same regarding current legal classification and appearance alone. However, the historical background is different. Kodachi, as the name describes, is a small Tachi.
Tachi was a sword used by samurai on horseback until the Sengoku period, and the shorter version of this sword was called Kodachi (small Tachi). Some say Kodachi were for aristocrats who wanted to carry katana like samurai, or maybe it was for the children of the samurai family to carry. On the other hand, a Wakizashi is a short Uchi-katana. Uchi-katana were mainly swords that samurai wore at their waists during the peaceful Edo period (1603-1868), and a Wakizashi always accompanied them.
In other words, Kodachi (small Tachi) and Wakizashi were made in different periods and for different purposes.

#ryokan #hotel #traveljapan #visitjapanWhy Iai is Bul* Shi*Lets ask Shogo | Your Japanese friend in Kyoto2024-05-25 | I’ve made many videos about Iaido, the art of katana drawing. However, I always get comments from people saying that Iai is bullshi* and that the Kata we train will never actually happen in real life. Well, most of these keyboard fighters don’t understand why we train Kata. But they actually have a point. That’s because Iai mainly developed during the peaceful… The beloved, EDO PERIOD!! It developed so much because this era was so peaceful that most samurai hardly had any opportunity to draw their katana. They might train Kenjutsu/Kendo with wooden and bamboo swords, but their real katana was just something they carried in their everyday life. But it’d be shameful if a samurai couldn't draw and sheathed his katana, right? That’s why samurai started Iai training. In other words, the main purpose of practicing iai was "to remember how to handle the katana.” Of course, assumptions were made to some extent based on actual battles, but whether or not it could be used was not the most important aspect. The main purpose of iai was to maintain the dignity of the samurai.

♪Music♪ otowabi.com/category/material/japan ♪Sound effects♪ soundeffect-lab.info ♪Pictures♪ irasutoya.comWhy Funerals at Temples?Lets ask Shogo | Your Japanese friend in Kyoto2024-05-22 | Whenever there is a funeral scene in a Japanese anime or movie, a monk is usually chanting sutras while beating a wooden fish. This is a Buddhist funeral. In Japan, when someone passes away, we ask a monk to perform a memorial service. However, most Japanese people are not religious. Why is it that only funerals suddenly become Buddhist?
It is because, during the Edo period (1603-1867), a value system of Buddhism = funeral was formed. Since Buddhism was originally very powerful in Japan, it frequently clashed with the authorities of the time. The Tokugawa family, who established the Edo period, realized that violence could not easily suppress religious power. They but rather gave them the role of managing family registers and funerals of each region. In this way, the Buddhist forces stopped rebelling against the Shogunate, as they could continue to receive a certain amount of income. The culture continues today, and funerals are generally held at temples.

#thankyou #foryour #support #thingstodoinkyotoWhy Do Japanese LOVE to Drink so Much?Lets ask Shogo | Your Japanese friend in Kyoto2024-05-15 | When you start living in Japan, there is one thing you will notice right away. There is an unusual number of drinking parties. Not only in the workplace, but every community holds drinking parties at every opportunity. Even the Japanese are getting tired of it, and half-mandated drinking parties at the workplace are becoming a problem. Why do Japanese people like drinking parties so much?
In most cases, I think it is because many Japanese people cannot express their true feelings without drinking. My old boss also said, "In the end, you can't trust anyone until you go out drinking. You never know what they are thinking in their minds." If you are invited to a drinking party, you do not need to force yourself to attend or to drink. However, since the purpose is essentially to deepen friendship within the community, it is better to show up occasionally as part of communication.
