Rumbelle on Once Upon A Time is one of the most toxic ships on television right now. Not only is there manipulation at every turn, but it seems as though we are going to be getting a baby out of this. Beyond that, we just need to discuss this show and its need to drop turds on our laps. Can We Be Done With RUMBELLE?

Content Warning: Discussion of childhood sexual abuse, biphobia, transphobia, sexual harassment, and addiction.
Pride is an interesting time. More often than not, it is both a time for celebration and for over-thinkers like myself to reflect on the realities of how experiences within the LGBTQIA community have changed. Or haven't.
A little under a year ago, actress Anne Heche was declared brain-dead and taken off life support on August 15, 2022. If you don't know her name, you might remember her as the voice of Suyin Beifong in The Legend of Korra. She was on shows like Everwood, Ally McBeal, and All Rise and in the films I Know What You Did Last Summer and John Q.
Hers is a name I’d heard in passing growing up. Still, I had no idea about the trauma and battles she faced throughout her life as a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, sexual harassment, familial trauma, mental health issues, and extreme biphobia. And when I was working on an article about her passing back in 2022, her story resonated with me because as we have seen the attempts from Conservatives to criminalize our community—I think it is important to remember the damage that we also do to each other when we fail to back each other.
So this video is a bit of queer history, reflection, and a lot of trying to explain why we need to re-access how to talk to each other. I promise to try and do something happier for the next Pride. Maybe.

If you walk into a bookstore and look at new releases, you will likely see at least one or two feminist retellings of Greek mythological figures.
From Medusa to Clytemnestra to Penelope, we see a new boom of retellings. But it is not new. What does this new generation of reimagined classics say about the moment we are in and the limitations of trend reimagining versus how we learn these stories in an academic setting?

Also, I just realized that Ridley Scott directed all the Adam Driver "sex scenes" in 2021.
In 2021 director Ridley Scott released two films House of Gucci and The Last Duel. Neither film performed spectacularly well, but while House of Gucci was always expected to live or die on the backs of Lady Gaga fans—The Last Duel grossing only 30 million against a budget of 100 million, was treated (along with the failure of The Northman in 2022) as an example of how audiences don't support "adult" movies. And the struggle of non-franchise movies during the COVID era. While neither film fully understood the assignment, I find the surprise surrounding The Last Duel's failure particularly interesting. I don't think people wanted to watch an old-timey rape trial, and it prompts an exciting conversation about the disconnect between what audiences show up for and what studios think they will show up for.

Yes, I know it is cliche now that people of my generation have retroactively tried to turn the prequels into art, and while I wouldn't go that far—with the absolute mess that was the handling of the structure of the sequel series we at least get a W for being able to at least string together a cohesive story for three installments. Not to mention Padmé is tragically one of the most well-developed women in the Star Wars main canon—no, I will not be taking questions at this time. And for all the issues with Hayden Hayden Christensen's performance as Anakin in the films, the character struggle of Anakin and his arc from a young boy to Darth Daddy Vader is interesting. To me, the tragedy of Anakin can be seen in my favorite line from The Phantom Menace:
“I’m a person, and my name is Anakin.”

To quote bell hooks: "Feminism is a struggle to end sexist oppression. Therefore, it is necessarily a struggle to eradicate the ideology of domination that permeates Western culture on various levels, as well as a commitment to reorganizing society so that the self-development of people can take precedence over imperialism, economic expansion, and material desires."
In this video, we will be exploring how Set It Off crafts a film that is rooted in the intersection of class, gender, and sexuality; it represents Black women in a way that I think is key in a feminist film.

Bridgerton is one of Netflix's most successful intellectual properties, so we are getting a spin-off about the younger years of Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Sterlitz. Who was played on the flagship series by Guyanese-British lesbian actor Golda Rosheuvel and the younger version will be played by India Amarteifio.
As a tie-in, Julia Quinn (and Shonda Rhimes) have penned a prequel series titled "Queen Charlotte" about the monarch and the tragic love story between herself and George III.
While I overall support the efforts of bringing people of color into period dramas—mainly because they are a significant part of Western European media and therefore, I want talented actors of color to be included. The particular expansion of Charlotte makes me feel a bit uncomfortable because once you get past a certain period with the British Royal Family—or any royal family—slavery becomes a reality. Let's talk about it.

Nuance gets thrown around a lot and when it comes to the argument of if we should have original BIPOC characters or race-bent ones around the upcoming "The Little Mermaid" adaptation, we can discuss that without ignoring the racism that is being flung around.

When Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was released in 2005, J.K. Rowling finally described the Slytherin student character Blaise Zabini. A character many had head-cannoned as a white dark-haired Italian boy was now a Black teenager of exceptional beauty. For some, it wasn't even fully acknowledged until the film adaptation, but there was still a backlash from some fans who no longer thought the character "fit."
We will discuss the reaction to that revelation and why it complicated how Rowling wrote about Slytherin and Blood Purity. Even if she didn't realize it.

How did we get from being called a "race agitator" to Rollo Goodlove?
Note: I felt like I could have gone harder on discussing the anti-Semitic issue so I reached out to my friend and fellow creator @Ladyknightthebrave and they gave me some feedback so I wanted to just add this: The incident at Crown Heights was, by all accounts, an accident, and the rumors that the ambulances didn't stop to help the Black children are unfounded. Sharpton did not help the issue and while he has "apologized" it doesn't erase how he played a part in inflaming the scapegoating the Jewish community at large at that time. Explaining and discussing the issues that created his comments, do not excuse them and we can, and should, discuss these things without anti-Blackness and anti-Semitic language.

When it was announced that Rebecca Hall was making a film adaptation of Nella Larson's Passing there was "discussion" about if the leads, Tessa Thompson and Ruth Negga, "passed" and what it meant to pass. Especially in the 1920s and 30s that Larson was writing about. In this video, we are going to discuss Passing. The novel, the film, and the concept of Passing today and at the time in which Larson was writing.

The Princess and The Frog and Soul, are the two Black firsts—the first Black Disney Princess and the first Pixar movie with a Black lead.
Each attempting to gain representation clout from young and old people who have been socialized for generations to view the company as synonymous with universality. Now, this criticism of Soul and Princess and the Frog, or really any polarizing BIPOC animated creation does not dismiss the feelings of those who may feel represented by it—or dismiss the one BIPOC creator works like this bring on for "authenticity."
It is calling out the failures of crafting diversity around a theme or topic, not build to actual deal with Blackness, or otherness, that lead to the film ultimately failing to really say anything—at least to this lady.

A brief look at the media history of rape-revenge films and how Promising Young Woman fails to give audiences the kind of catharsis they deserve.
CW: This video is going to be critically discussing the rape-revenge genre, while I do not go into detail or show any sexual assault in the video—I do say the word and I made the decision to not censor it because I found the idea to be honestly very strange. As a survivor, I don’t think the word needs to be censored during analysis and if the Adsense punishes me for it so be it.
If that is too much for anyone, please, don’t feel the need to watch & take care of yourself.

Gabrielle Union should absolutely be proud of all she has done, but it is also worth acknowledging how despite being so popular in the culture nexus—she was still smothered and underserved in an industry that knew she was special. What’s more is that ultimately, that hasn’t changed.

When looking at Stephen King's oeuvre you see that some of his most popular works contain Magical Negroes and/or some sort of non-white mysticism.
Now before anyone starts—I AM NOT CALLING KING RACIST—in fact, every book I'm going to mention is one I really enjoy.
That is why this topic is of interest to me.

Originally, this video was going to just be about Black criticism, but as more things started happening at the intersection of my Blackness and queerness I decided that I wanted to talk about them both.
We see a lot of discourse about creators of color feeling stifled by the hyper criticism they can receive from their communities. As fans, creators, critics what we enjoy becomes inherently political. So let's discuss the relationships that exist between criticism and critics, as well as exploring the frustration of how we can move forward with being critical of our communities without turning it into gatekeeping or war.

If I were to list my excitement levels for the Disney+ MCU series, WandaVision would have been at the bottom of the list. As a fan of Wanda from the comics, I hadn’t felt like the movies made ample use of her character, her interesting history as a character, or really made her powers make sense in the grand scheme of things.
Man, I love it when I’m wrong.

Plus since at this point in time a good 90% of media seems to be related to comics or some sort of IP that is attached to the military or some big cooperation, it is oddly relevant to explore how exactly our superhero content reflects the most cynical and optimistic parts of our entertainment brains. Especially when it comes to the heroes who end up becoming the most popular.
