Take a close look at 15th and 16th century armor in all its intricacy. I bet you'll agree that military outfits went downhill after that. With some exceptions, as always (and pertaining to the Western world).
If you ever have a chance to visit the Royal Armouries in Leeds (UK), by all means... do yourself a favor. It's a fantastic museum.
