In the summer of ’16 we invited Aminé into our DSCVR program off the heat of his breakout hit “Caroline.” The next year, we bumped up the affable Portland rhymer to LIFT status, believing he’d carved a place on the scene for years to come. Considering the range of flows, feels, and vision the rapper displayed on last year’s ‘Limbo,’ that bet has paid off. “Charmander” is from Aminé’s new ‘TwoPointFive’ project, a nominal sequel to a 2018 mixtape. Experimenting in loopy, ethereal arpeggios, it’s chill on the surface, but actually reveals an Aminé contending with, and ultimately being contented by, loneliness. Why the track is named after the adorable fire Pokémon has been left up to keen fans of both the anime and rapper to figure out. “I’ve been taking care of me,” raps Aminé again and again. That’s a mantra we could all do well to repeat to ourselves these days.

Like humans and animals, plants need both water and nutrients to survive - food. Most all plants use water to carry moisture - nutrients back and forth between the roots and leaves. Bitch.
Searching for my shelter through the storm I find peace, my safe haven, keeping me far away from harm Nevertheless the greener grass is proof the roots are strong But now we standing here divided, choose the side where you belong Mama keep the lights on All I see is red so we awake the dead she likes my third eye she loves my third leg This my third time around the worldwide, winds give me the Versay- Versac- Benz, put work in Made my words work with pens Scribbling sins, I drop gems I don't got tick tock time for them, seeds or stems Evil men plottin’, we see you ‘cause we watching We see you, believe me you we see you (Mr. Root!) Get your ass up out that grass and stretch your limbs Photosynthesis I see the future picture take a glimpse Everything you trynna have is in your grab so get a grip (Mr. Root!) Working dead end jobs til my girl off Me and my baby broke so we don’t know what condoms are The change my Mama gave me clinking like they Dorothy dog I hope my seed don’t inherit my Dad’s cholesterol I’m protective ‘cause this world has got an evil will They giving guns with every muthafuckin’ happy meal A shooter every month and they pretend it’s daffodils My son’ll probably see that fire before a fire drill We fell in love and lit a flame before the tinder came Back when T.I. “Bring Em Out” and 50 fuck with Game We was a unit something special life was super bliss You shook your iced coffees like they was Shakira hips, ya dig
I- I- I want it but She- she- she calling She want to get on it I tell her I’m on one Said we could have a baby, baby girl But what kinda nigga am I if I bring ‘em in this world
I- I- I want it but She- she- she calling She want to get on it I tell her I’m on one Said we could have a baby, baby girl But what kinda nigga am I if I bring ‘em in this world
To my future daughter.. or son The streams from this album gon’ pay for your college funds The circle of life could make a man feel like the one Just know that you on purpose, it's never just hit and run, look
She said she might've missed her period But my mind is somewhere else and I'm in 6th period You know, 17 and delirious Thinkin we independent on that scared of our parents shit See plan b really gotta be Plan B Shit maybe C, D, E this is my damn seed We paid cash rip up the damn receipt ‘Cause Mama got my account, that shit she can’t see Either times’ flying or my mind is playing tricks Can’t believe my baby girls’ already turning six Pray you nothing like your Daddy, stay away from drugs Hope I can be half the father that my Mama was Yea, hope I can be half the father that the Mamba was But now im kinda stuck cause what i’m chasing is so possesfull Cause Adam…. Yea Adam talkin’ college funds Shit, And I don't know if ill have enough Cause man this game is inconsistent Yea, ain’t nothing promised And a by-weekly paycheck sound perfect for my wallet At what point ya hang the gloves up and throw ya towel on Have I been wrong? Yea
I think we are so used to life not being valued, that we think wasting it on kindness is a bad idea. You should be getting money, you should be fucking hoes, you should drive fast cars, and then you realize sometimes you get those things and now you’re just a nigga with those things. Cause its like what’s next, well I never tried a grape fruit by itself (haha) and now you just a nigga peeling (like) eating a grapefruit and you’re like this is nice (with sugar in it) and you’re like why is this nicer than my Ferrari?

Our LIFT artist Aminé, of 'Caroline' fame, reflects on his music and the way his career has advanced this past year. "With my songs I don't hope for anything. I just put 'em out and when it goes well it's a way better feeling that way." See what else he has to say.
Our LIFT artist Aminé is a wildly inventive MC whose sense of whimsy is central to his approach. The Portland native's videos and films are some of hip-hop's most entertaining visuals. His debut album 'Good For You' dropped in July, and Aminé is touring the US this fall. He had a blast at Vevo Halloween 2017 - The Other World, presented by Honda Stage, sharing the bill with fellow LIFT artists, Julia Michaels, SZA, Khalid and Jessie Reyez. Don't miss his performance of "Caroline."

Our LIFT artist Aminé may be a skilled MC, but he’s also an impressive talent when it comes to making videos. A firm believer in the DIY aesthetic, the Portland, Oregon rapper directed his wildly popular clips for “Caroline” and “REDMERCEDES.” He also conceived and scripted his “Becoming” profile for LIFT – a glance back to his high school days. For the Stripped performance of his new track “Turf,” he takes us to the Alhambra section of East LA, choosing the aisles of a neighborhood grocery store as his stage. And talk about clever coordination - that's a banana-yellow mic he’s using.
Aminé is all about ideas, and he seldom goes about things the way others do. The Portland, Oregon MC, whose “Caroline” video blew up in 2016 (it’s clocked more than 150MM views on Vevo), has a wry sense of humor and tight group of buds. A firm believer in the DIY aesthetic, he directed “Caroline” himself, and cast his pals in its squad-at-the-drive-thru setting. When it came time to present a portrait of himself to the fans he’s earned during the past year (his “REDMERCEDES” also created a sizable buzz), our latest LIFT artist chose to script a short film that would provide a snapshot of his high school years and the way music has long been central in his life.
‘Becoming Aminé’ heads back to the corridors of Portland’s Benson Polytech, the rapper’s actual alma mater, for a look at how he and his crew try to get his music played by mysterious local DJ, Johnny James. By its end it’s easy to see how camaraderie and absurdity intertwine in his world view. “I didn’t want to bring you back to the home where I grew up and say, ‘Oh look, I grew up in the hood,” he says. “Everyone does that. I wanted to show you a day from my past, from high school with my friends, that speaks to who I am today.”
