Dreams: A Duet for Bass Trombone and Marimba by Reed Benson @ReedBensonComp

Reed Benson Dreams is my favorite song I ever created. I created the original Dreams two years ago when I first created Asylum (link in the description). Now, I created a Duet based off Dreams and even a Wind Ensemble piece as well.

Last summer, I was chosen to be apart of the Lamont Summer Academy at Denver University. I played with their Wind Ensemble and Orchestra learning music during the two weeks I was there. However, we had the chance to choose Minors along with my Major (which mine was percussion). I choose to minor in Composition because I want to become a composer. When I signed up for the composition minor, I misread the email and thought the said I could choose my instruments when I got there, so I never replied. I got an email along with all the other students participating in composition. Since I never replied, I was given Bass Trombone for my instrument and he said I could participate in my composition if I wanted to. I decided I wanted to participate with Marimba so that is what I did.

Instead of writing a new song, I decided to go with my most liked song which was Dreams. I made it into a duet which my partner Grayson and I played (and he was able to play it too. I thought he couldn't because I write difficult music). We played it and received dozens of complements after the concert. I have the recording of the live version, but tbh I am too scared to post it. This piece will always have a special place in my heart.

Reed Bensons 2024 Senior Composition Recital - University of Northern Colorado Music Composition

Reed Benson 2024-06-03 | Hello everyone! Sorry this is a bit late, but I have officially graduated the University of Northern Colorado with my Bachelors in Music Composition! After a long, long journey. I have final gotten my degree and I'm so happy that this journey has came to an end! There are some thank you notes that I must give out in this description before I continue!

I would like to thank the University of Northern Colorado School of Music for giving me this opportunity in the first place. I wasn't the greatest student in high school, but after I achieved my associates degree, I decided to try for a four year school to continue on with my education. UNC was a school I was interested in for a long time and I'm glad that I finally got that chance several years later. No matter what age you are, you can accomplish anything!

I would like to thank my family that has supported me and my music this entire time, to encourage me to keep striving to what I love to do and to give me confidence to continue this as a career. No matter the many times I thought about quitting or my mental breakdowns throughout this journey, I am so glad that I got the guts to continue and finish this well deserved degree

I would also like to thank the colleges that I have made throughout the way, the ones that I got a chance to learn off of, got to perform with and got a chance to become friends with. All of the laughs that we had together made all of this more special and I can't be happier

You have both taught me skills that I would have never learned outside of this school and helped me figure out some issues not even related to music. Otherwise, that's it. My journey has come to a close. I don't know if I will continue with a masters degree in the future but until then, I'm going to have some fun and figure out what I want to do for the future. Recurring Dreams: A Duet for Marimba and Vibraphone by Reed Benson

Reed Benson 2023-11-28 | What's this? A new composition? It's only been about a year since I last posted! Hello everyone and I'm back! I took a very long break from writing as well from College due to my own personal needs but now I'm back, writing a bunch of pieces for my Senior Recital in April!

In this song, this is going to act as a Movement Two from my original Marimba/Vibraphone duet of Dreams! This is a very rhythmic second movement with lots of fun time signatures starting directly after the first movement!

Pain and Suffering - An Original Composition by Reed Benson

Reed Benson 2021-12-07 | Pain and Suffering is my latest composition written in the style of Twelve-Tone Composition that honestly I wrote in a day. This was my final project for Music History IV at UNCO and although I love my professor and I enjoyed writing this, I really had no interest in the piece until I started putting stuff on paper. Overall, I think this is fine and it does the job. However, looking back on it I could see it actually resembling the feeling of stress and how sometimes life can seem hopeless, making us feel like we are suffering while in pain emotionally. Despite that, I had more fun recording this in the classroom then I did writing it. However, due to the performance being on my phone and in poor quality, I made an acceptable version in Finale to publish on YouTube

Journey into the Infinite Unknown - An Original Composition by Reed Benson

Reed Benson 2021-11-04 | Journey into the Infinite Unknown is my latest project for my Digital Composition course and the task this time was to make video game music, but more specifically two drum loops representing something that could be heard in a video game. This is also my first composition with a program called Reason which I like more than Digital Performer but I will still use Digital Performer. Anyway, I didn't do that ... kinda ... but I wanted to make this into a composition but in a slight style of a medley. I was highly inspired by Mega Man and Super Mario Galaxy to make this composition and I broke this up into multiple parts:

- The organ at the beginning is the intro
- The next two minutes after that represents Boss Battle music but way more upbeat
- When it slows down, it is suppose to represent a transition and with the heroic organ means the end of the Boss Battle
- After that we go into an idle like trance so like it is idle music or pause menu music
- Then we transition into the final part of the composition where I believe this represents a more linear level or maybe space shopping music

Stargazing - An Original Composition by Reed Benson

Reed Benson 2021-09-10 | Stargazing is a brand new original composition where we experience sitting out, watching the night sky and see the stars fly by. This is my first attempt at a real original composition with Digital Performer. My first real project came last year which was my First Noel arrangement but it was a complete disaster on Digital Performer that I ended up publishing the arrangement using Finale. Now that I am learning how to really use Digital Performer, I am planning on posting new stuff with this as well as Finale too. As for errors, my biggest issue was getting notes to line up with each other after inserting them with the keyboard but then it actually worked to a point where it became a stylish decision. Otherwise, I think that although the mixing isn't the best, I still think I did a good job with this and I am curious on what I will do with Digital Performer in the future

Always Together | Movement I: Explore With Me

Reed Benson 2021-09-02 | After going through many different names for this piece and after an almost four month hiatus, I am back with a new original composition with plenty of more to come. Always Together - Movement One: Explore With Me is an original composition about how I reimagine childhood with my friends and family where we play, explore and learn (possible other movement names). Going through college right now has been tough and sometimes I imagine being a kid again, with my old friends that I haven't talked to in years. This is my way to writing that into song. This is for Piano and String Ensembles, with two more movements on the way. When though is TBD. I also have more original compositions and film scoring projects on the way too!

Welcome to Basinvault - An Original Composition by Reed Benson

Reed Benson 2020-10-26 | Welcome to Basinvault is my newest composition for my composition instructor. This time, I have made a woodwind quintet and I have completed this at 5 in the morning because I am struggling to sleep. I honestly enjoyed the way this ended and honestly, this isn't my best work but I am proud of what I did. Also, I used a random name generator to come up with the title so if you guys are wondering if Basinvault is real, it isn't. I did google it just to make sure as well haha. Reed Benson 2020-10-05 | March of the Victorious is my newest piece that I created for my composition professor. He honestly didn't care much for the last piece I did when I kinda did a march so my next assignment was try again and expect focus heavily on the melody which I am pretty sure I achieved greatly. I absolutely adore the way this turned out and I hope you all like it! Also, I just wanted to say that I the piece I thought of when composing this was John's Williams "Midway March". I love that piece and I thought his march was something that I wanted to try and write! And finally, yes, the picture I used is a Soviet Parade and I used this photo because I just liked it. I didn't think of the soviet army or WWII but you can make it like that if you like

Legends of the Golden Knights | Movement Three: The Siege

Reed Benson 2020-09-28 | Legends of the Golden Knights | Movement Three: The Siege is the final movement of my Golden Knights Piano Trilogy that I made for my composition instructor. Overall, he has mixed feelings about it which I completely understand but I just wanted to finish this because I didn't want to work on this anymore. I wanted to move on and work on something new but because I did this, my next assignment is to write another march because I basically ignored the melody in this and did a lot of rhythmic filler. However, I think this is still a good finale to this trilogy and I am happy with it despite the feedback which I do endorse. However, he says I am getting better so that's a start!

Legends of the Golden Knights | Movement Two: The Prophecy

Reed Benson 2020-09-21 | Before we start with the video description, I want to say I apologize for the audio scratch's in this piece. I tried multiple times making new audio files and nothing work so I had to post it with the occasional audio scratches in it! Hopefully that doesn't ruin anyone's experience!

Legend of the Golden Knights | Movement Two - The Prophecy is my second and possibly last movement on my Legends of the Golden Knights piano suite that I made for my college. In the first movement, the golden knights fight in a duel played as a march style and then in this movement we learn about the prophecy that the golden knights will have to face and accomplish in the style of a ballad. I decided to go with the ballad for the second movement because I felt like we need to take breaks between movements to help calm the audience and performer. I also went with a ballad because when I think of the prophecy within this suite, I want to think of this as the knights discovering this great quest that will make them legends.

I don't know honestly I was just told to write a second movement lol. However, no matter what I write when it comes to movements, my goal is to make each movement connect with each other in some way either if it is callbacks to different melodies, styles or if I just want to tell a story through music which I think is perfectly acceptable. Will I make a movement three, I would like too but if that isn't my next assignment then it may be a while before it comes out. Otherwise, that's it.

Childs Play - An Original Piano Composition by Reed Benson

Reed Benson 2020-08-31 | Hello everyone and welcome back! I have made a new original composition to share to everyone and this is called Child's Play. This was originally just something I wrote to present to my composition teacher at College but I actually really liked the way this piece turned out so I want to share it with all of you. Child's Play is a Piano solo that the style is inspired by Waltz and when I was composing this, this gave me a big circus vibe so I decided to give it the name Child's Play instead of something basic like Big Top or any cliche circus names. Also, for some reason I feel like I have to point this out. This original composition of mine for Piano has nothing to do with the Child's Play horror movie franchise! I'm not stealing anything from them!

Dreams - A Duet For Bass Trombone and Marimba (Live at Lamont School of Music 2016)

Reed Benson 2020-06-20 | So, this is the video of when I played my duet live back in 2016. Of course, this is my Duet called Dreams written for Bass Trombone and Marimba that I wrote for the two week summer program at Lamont School of Music. It wasn't the greatest experience in the world but when I finally had the time the shine, I took it. Grayson, the bass trombonist who helped me this, did a fantastic job playing the piece with me and I was very grateful for his help. I will be attending the University of Northern Colorado in the fall for composition so I am excited for the opportunities I will be able to make.

This is My Story: Movement Three - An Original Indoor Percussion Show

Reed Benson 2020-01-31 | Well everyone, I did it. "This is My Story: Movement Three" has finally been completed. I posted the second movement to this show three years ago and I am finally putting out movement three today. I am extremely excited to be sharing this with everyone and I hope you all enjoy.

"This is My Story" is an original indoor percussion show by Reed Benson. It consists of three movements and is about a father/grandfather telling a story to their son/grandson). We follow them along with the music to see what comes next with some additional twists and turns.

In about a month or two, I will release a final version of "This is My Story" containing the script/dialogue and some artwork for this piece. Hopefully I will have this published sometime in the future but we will see.

Dreams: A Duet for Bass Trombone and Piano by Reed Benson

Reed Benson 2019-10-28 | So, yes. Hi everyone! It has been a while since I posted any music and I promise I am not dead. I do have projects coming up soon that I would really like to continue on but I am not on the most open schedule at the moment. I am currently a student at college right now and I am also working full time on long hours so me being able to write has not been my biggest priority right now. So, at the moment, I decided to do a filler to let you all know where I have been.

Now, this piece is nothing new. This is one of my most popular videos on YouTube being the duet for Bass Trombone and Marimba. However, I saw this file in my OneDrive saying audio for Piano and Bass Trombone. I honestly forgot that this file existed. I actually made this version for my friend who asked for this to be in French Horn and Piano so he and his college buddy could play it. I honestly never found out if he played it or not haha. Because of this, I decided to post this so everyone will think I did not die! There are some differences between the piano and the marimba because I do have more freedom with the Piano than I do with the Marimba so, yea.

I do have a couple projects I am working on at the moment that hopefully I can get one of those done before December ends. The projects include the third movement to my Indoor Percussion Show "This is My Story" which I have neglected for the absolute longest time. The piece is halfway done but I haven't worked on it in a while due to work obligations. I do have several arrangements I am working on as well and a symphony that I have in the very early stages at the moment. I am also trying to experiment with midi to possibly make pieces a lot quicker with a piano instead of inserting everything into Finale.

Misfortune - An Original Composition by Reed Benson

Reed Benson 2019-05-03 | Misfortune is my final theory project of my community college experience, and honestly, I had fun in community college but I can't wait for the future opportunities that will come to me.

Anyways, about the piece, This piece is my second project out of three and unfortunately you guys won't be able to see the third project unless if I figure out how to write it in Finale. This project is all a Twelve-Tone composition written in Piano while my third project is an Indeterminacy (Thanks John Cage lol). I never really been a fan of Twelve-Tone music because I always thinks it sounds really ugly so that is why I had the idea to call it Misfortune, symbolizing depression or bad luck.

Anyways, that is really all I have to say about the piece. This took me a little bit under two hours to write. Thank god there is Coda's so I don't have to spend four hours writing it. Central Park - Arranged for Small Ensembles

Reed Benson 2019-04-12 | Central Park is an original composition by James Newton Howard from the 2005 feature length film King Kong, directed by the one and only Peter Jackson. This piece for me has always been very special for a couple of reasons. One being that I really like the movie and like James Newton Howard as a composer. The second reason why is because my high school marching band played the music from King Kong 2005 my sophomore year where I marched Bass 3, Central Park (or titled Beautiful in the Show) was our ballad. After I discovered this piece I fell in love with it. It is so simple yet it leaves a warm feeling in your heart.

Right now I am a sophomore in college. One day, I was talking to my instructor about possible pieces for our percussion show I told about my sophomore year of high school and showed him this piece. He said if I arrange it, he would be very glad to allow the group to play this. And present day, that is going to happen very soon and I am very excited. So this being the audio file, certain sounds like the Djembe and the Synth Strings sound really bizarre. I had to mess around with sounds to make it so no ones ear drums would be blown off lol. Otherwise, I like the way this turned out.

Young Men Walking - An Original Composition by Reed Benson

Reed Benson 2019-03-19 | Young Men Walking is an original composition that I made for my Theory IV class. I basically decided to go out of my comfort zone and tried to do something kinda jazzy in a good way. In my opinion, I think this turned out so-so. I liked the way I did the beginning but wasn't a huge fan of the ending I wrote. Either way, it is done and it is finished. I don't have to worry about this piece again! Yay!

Spy on the Run - Arranged for Marching Bands

Reed Benson 2019-01-11 | Based on one of my first pieces I have ever written, I present to all you "Spy on the Run - Arranged for Marching Bands". When I showed this to my teacher back in high school, he said the piece reminded him of a marching band show instead of a wind ensemble. Due to the comment he made, that is what I did. This took me three years for me to complete this because I kept losing interest in finishing the piece. The last few weeks I toughed it out and finished the ending and my god, I loved the way this turned out.

Promenade Dans Les Prés Dorés - An Original Composition by Reed Benson

Fasi di Amore - An Original Composition by Reed Benson

Reed Benson 2018-10-01 | Fasi Di Amore is a song I recently brought out of retirement. When I was looking around my onedrive for some one my old pieces, I found Fasi Di Amore (which means Stages of Love in Italian). When I found it, it was about nine measures away from being finished so I decided to give it an ending and publish it. Honestly, I like this song except for a few parts but overall I enjoyed Fasi Di Amore. Unfortunately, the sound quality is pretty weak so I do appoligize for that and I promise the next song will sound better.

Dreams: For String Quartets

Sounds of Silence - An Arrangement for Full Orchestra by Reed Benson

Reed Benson 2017-11-03 | Sounds of Silence is a song written by the group Simon and Garfunkel. It was written over a period of months between 1963 - 1964 and released in October of 1964. The song's origin and basis remain unclear, with multiple answers coming forward over the years. Many believe that the song commented on the John F. Kennedy assassination, as the song was released three months after the assassination.

In the original version, it was more of an upbeat kind of song with Drum Set, Guitar, Piano, and Bass. It became one of the top selling singles in 1965. However, in December of 2015, a cover of "Sounds of Silence" was released by a American Heavy Metal Band called Disturbed. It hit number one on the Billboard Hard Rock Digital Songs and Mainstream Rock charts, and is their highest-charting song on the Hot 100, peaking at number 42. It is also their highest-charting single in Australia, peaking at number 4.

In this version, the key is in F#m with the chord progression being F#, E, D then A. Instead of heavy metal music, this cover features a piano, vocals, multiple guitars, Timpani, Cymbals, Chimes, and even a full string orchestra. In my arrangement of this cover, I am substituting the main lyrics for Cello and Guitar for Harp. Otherwise, I tried to make this as close to the original as I possibly can while trying to arrange each instrument of the song into woodwinds, brass, strings, and percussion.

Past or Present - A Song for Small Ensembles by Reed Benson

Reed Benson 2017-07-12 | This song was something made about 2 years ago using Finale. I was going to post this song sooner but I lost the original audio file. However, I recently figured out that I could download music off of SoundCloud. Since I post songs on SoundCloud first, I downloaded it off of SoundCloud so I can post this on YouTube! Hooray!

This song doesn't really haven't anything behind it. It is just a short groovy song with two different styles and different tempos. This song is all in the key of A Minor and it changes back and forth from 4/4 and 12/8 (which is basically the same thing lol) and also 3/4 to 5/4 making it two 4/4 bars lol.

Dreams by Reed Benson (Made with Finale 2014.5)

Reed Benson 2017-06-22 | After 3 months of writing and 1 month of trying to download an audio file to this, I finally have my arrangement of Asylum: Dreams for Wind Ensembles. The piece is 9 minutes long and separated into 4 different parts. The beginning (or part one) is called "Good Dreams". If you haven't heard Asylum: Dreams before (link will be at the bottom of the description or find it on my SoundCloud), it is exactly the same thing except it cuts out into a rit. with an Alto Sax Solo after the Db Major ending note instead of 4 more bars of the melody. The one thing I liked about part one is the simple melody that goes 2+3+4 and how it came out to sound so lovely. Between Part 1 and Part 2, there is a transition leading into the next faze of Dreams. It starts out with an Alto Sax solo that slowly goes into a slower tempo. After that, there will be a pause for a french horn cadenza with cues for the band. After the last note of the solo hits, the french horn holds the note for 2 measures while the last thing we should here is a piano note and a harp chord.

Part 2 is called "Lucid Dreaming". If you didn't know, Lucid Dreaming is a certain kind of dream that will allow you to interact with it and experience all the senses in the dream. In "Lucid Dreaming", I wanted to show this as a waltz. Imagine that you had a dream about being Cinderella and went to ball. This is my example.

To make this description shorter, Part 3 is called "Free" and Part 4 is called "Awakening". To be honest from to the end, I ran out of ideas. I originally was just going to base it off of the duet I made a while back but I thought that would be too short, so I decided to add some more music. In my personal opinion, I think the music sounds wonderful but it doesn't really make sense to the idea of what the song's idea should be. Otherwise, I think I did a pretty decent job with this piece.

If you think I should add a little more or maybe a section out, please let me know (if anyone reads this). My plan is to add about a minute and a half to the waltz but since I can't make audio files with the Finale file of Dreams until I upgrade to Version 25, that might take a while.
